Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

I'm assuming samtheman meant 4K compressed. Rather than HD from the 4K Raw. Or possibly 12 bit RGB (similar to the 12 bit RGB on the FS700 roadmap).

Just out of interest, since you're answering questions and I'm too lazy to go to the CD website ;-), can the O7Q record the 120fps half Raw from the C500 on it's own to two SSDs, or do we need two of them like with the Gemini?

If it can, that's pretty awesome.
Understood, and as I said -- not at this time but we will offer them in the future.

120fps "Half RAW" is the same data load as full 4K RAW. That's fully uncompressed 4K RAW blasting down the pipe as fast as the camera can spit it out -- so fast that you'll fill an entire terabyte of memory (two 512G SSDs) in only 20 min. With a data load like that you better believe that we need to stripe across two SSDs to record it.

Hey Mitch,

I know this was mentioned as a "yes" before, but are we still going to get 120fps and 240fps in true 4:2:2 10-bit Popular Codec? Now that you guys are further along with development, is that even possible? Would be amazing to say the least.

That's the goal. The tough thing is compressing frames at that speed and maintaining both data rate as well as a quality image. Something changes suddenly in the image and either the data rate expands to deal with it or information gets compressed to keep things moving. But the manufacturer (and Convergent Design) has standards as to how far we are allowing such deviation from either the comression data rate or the accurate capture of the image.

It's a dance. We'll know how we do when we get there.

Sorry, I probably wasn't being clear - I always assumed you would need at least two SSDs, what is was asking was: do you need two Odyssey recorders, i.e. Four SSDs to record the 4K RAW and half-Raw (and HD) for rates over 30fps from the C500? As you definitely need two Gemini recorders/4 SSDs to do this.

I think as long as you guys get the HD 10-bit to 60fps, most would be happy. I'm fine shooting higher frame rates 120fps+ in RAW. But dang... sure would be nice to have those compressed :) I'm getting greedy.

So it could be possible to power a wifi receiver...

For my information, what is a RMT port ?

I believe it means remote, as in remote control for the Odyssey. Something else coming in future FW. It is only going to get better...

This may be a silly question, but when the 1080P compressed firmware comes out, will I be able to use the 7Q to record any camera source, from either SDI or HDMI? In addition to my FS700 with 4K RAW upgrade, I have a Sony EX1 as well as a Canon C100 that I'd like to also use with the 7Q.

You will need only one Odyssey7Q, striping to two SSDs. That's how much more a machine the Odyssey7Q is compared to the Gemini444.

No, it's an important question. The Odyssey7Q is not just an accessory to the FS700. It can work with any camera that can output HD over SDI or HDMI, including your EX and your C100.

Thanks Mitch for your prompt reply (as always.) It's not completely clear from the CD website, but for the 1080P compressed recording on the FS700, I think I'll need to purchase the $795 FS700 raw option, is this correct? What about recording options for the other camcorders?

I guess the FS700 option is needed to access the FS700 RAW data.

If you are satisfied with the simple HDMI or SDI 8 Bit Output, provided out of the box by Sony and packed within a 10 Bit-Container, that should be recorded without additional charge from CD.

Picture quality will be much better, using the RAW data of course.

You can use 2K data for high frame rates. For regular frame rates, using the 4K feed will be the best way to go, as soon as we have a O7Q unit and the FW update. Convergent Design will downscale these images and in a future update, we will have 4K compressed recording. If Sony unlocks their license restrictions, even 4K uncompressed could be possible. RAW data (paid option) will be the only way to access a higher resolutation than 1080p fom our Sony FS700.

I guess the usual setup for Sony FS700 owners will be:
- camcorder RAW 2160p output
- High quality 1080p recording, derived from 4K RAW or
- Compressed 4K recording (both unlocked by the FS700 paid option)

I think that any use of FS700 RAW, even if the final recording is HD will require the CD purchase. But I'd like Mitch to confirm that. However for other camcorders that might be putting out more than 8 bit 4:2:2 that is normal for HDMI clean outputs such as the C100 or 5DMKII, in particular my EX1, which I believe outputs 10bit 4:2:2 out of the SDI port, how will that work with the 7Q? Mitch, if you could definitively reply that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm sure Mitch will confirm - but as far as I'm aware the O7 and O7Q can record any standard SDI or HDMI stream that comes into it without purchasing a licence, the only additional cost is the purchase of a CD Odyssey SSD. Inserting the SSD unlocks the recording feature. At present the only standard recording option is uncompressed (to .dpx) but the February update should bring in compressed to the fabled 'popular codec' and later to Avid DNx

The only time you need to purchase or hire a licence is if you wasnt to record some form of proprietary Raw data stream such as you get from the FS700, C500 or Alexa, Weisscam etc; or for multi-stream (ie multiple HD signals) recording.

Any use of the FS700 RAW signal requires the FS700 option.

Any camera with an SDI or HDMI out in 1080p/30 or lower, like 25p or 24p) either 8-bit or 10-bit, will all be recordable with no extra option using the compressed codec.

Your website lists the O7 and O7Q as being able to record 10bit 1080p at 60fps - I'm assuming you mean that initially you can record 30p or lower with no extra option, but this will be expanded to 60p and under at a later date (still at no extra cost).
