Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

In my documentary project, I try to obstruct the starting shot. It's a building construction and final plans need my approval. We will have large 4K displays on site later and I do not want to think about pimping up internal codec-footage for the initial sequences.
:)

So I hope, Mitch will post novelties about the Q2 2014 update, soon.

Unfortunately, I had to begin the doc earlier than anticipated and had too little time to find an alternative. So I have to live with the 420 8bit of a couple of shots...

Your doc sounds interesting :)

Anyway, we are getting off-topic here. Fact is, new firmware and - most of all more units for Europe (!) - are badly needed.

I just reached out to our European distributor. To paraphrase:

"We send out units on first come first served basis.

At current rate we are receiving units, we should clear out back orders by middle/end of March."

Convergent Design is shipping units all over the world. We have major orders in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and other territories. We are shipping volume quantities every week.

We have no way of knowing what a dealer is doing with the units we send them. They may all be pre sold. They may all be stocking inventory because the dealer figured it could sell them when it is time. Sometimes clients will order a unit and decide against purchasing it when the order becomes available.

Europe is getting it's fair share of Odyssey7Qs. So is Japan, but you never hear about deliveries to Japan on this forum. Eventually we will get through our huge back order. But new orders are coming in every day. If every order dried up today, we'd probably be able to fulfill everything outstanding right now by the time NAB rolled around.

Hey Mitch,

I ordered a Sony battery plate about a month ago from a major US Retailer and they still have not received the item to ship out. This is really disapointing, I'm stuck shooting with my 7q plugged into a wall. I'm sure you can appreciate what a pain this is and how limited mobility may be. Whats taking so long? On their site it said 7-14 days, at this point it's looking more 2 months :(

I ordered my battery plate on 1/10 from a major retailer, who also estimated a 7-14 day time frame. I finally received my battery plate yesterday, so hopefully yours won't be too far behind. From what I gathered from other posts, there were supply issues for these units and they are just now finally catching up. I know how frustrating being tied to an outlet is... Hope you get yours soon!!

Thanks for the info, glad to hear someone got it. yeah being tied to an outlet is a beyond a pain, especially when running from a crane or shoulder mounting, kind of ridiculous actually haha

Mitch, thanks for clarifying supply in Europe.

If the first come, first served-base is observed the full distribution chain, I am happy and are looking forward to join the connected to an outlet-problem owners in two, three or four weeks, too. I hope, that we can kick-start with all goodies (a unit, 4K compr. rec, batt plate and a nice hood) in the summer.

I got my 7Q last week and was number 4 with BPM Media in Germany! They didnt receive enough SSD's though - ha ha ha

We should have more stock soon. We've shipped hundreds of battery plates but underestimated how popular the product would be. We have an order for 500 more Sony L-series coming in soon.

I find it humorous that it was underestimated how popular it would be to shoot more than 3 feet from an outlet.

It would be humorous if this was the only battery solution available, but they made several power options and I suppose they thought people would pick more evenly between the options. Personally, I would have expected most people would have gone the route of D-tap with v-lock batteries - that was actually the direction I was heading for a while. But, I decided to go for this in the meantime as a stopgap before investing in those systems.

Hundreds of units is quite a lot for such a (possibly) niche product - this product could have busted if people chose another direction. But, they caught on to demand and have started to produce more, so at least they're doing what they can to catch up. :)

I ended up canceling my order and getting from Westsideav. Great service, and I should have it in a couple days. Just can't be plugged into a wall anymore ;) The V-lock batteries would great, but a little bulky for me. Otherwise also a good option.

Before we started shipping the Odyssey7Q, Ocean Video had the Enduro Power plate available, offering mounting and battery options. Shortly thereafter Nebtek started shipping the Odyssey Power Cage with a great variety of battery options. Westside AV came out with a battery mount as well. Plus we had a variety of cables including the ever-popular P-Tap (aka D-Tap) power connector. So we were a bit surprised by the demand for our own battery plate, figuring that the percentage of Odyssey7Q units sold that would also include a Sony L-series battery plate would not be s high as it has been. Same goes for the Canon mount version of the plate.

Anyway, we have a huge number of the metal plates in and we have ordered many hundreds of the battery mounts which attach to them. Our battery mount orders caught our suppliers by surprise, so together we're a bit behind on delivery. But we are catching up.

Haha, I know. It just seemed like a good opportunity for a joke. I picked up Olof's (Westside AV) NP battery plate as well as the D-tap cable. D-tap works great for shoulder rig (counterweight V-lock) and studio stuff. NP plate is great as mobile client monitor, lightweight rig, or having the monitor away from the camera (jib arm, etc). It's great that there are several options. Lots of flexibility.

Finally rocking the 7Q. Looking forward to Pro Res in all it's flavours. Would love to see continuous HFRs in true 10 bit Pro Res but after seeing what Mitch had to say on the subject in an earlier post, am not sure if this is going to be viable. Reading between the lines over on DV info though, it seems 4K raw may not be the remote possibility it once was.
