Odyssey Firmware 2015.5

I was having a problem this saturday, where 4KtoHD in 50p had a half sound signal, for example half way after the in point of the prores file there was no sound. I will test that further, but would be cool if you look into that. using that mode a lot when shooting run and gun or doc... Alteady sent the ssme message to CD support. Just a heads up for all here on the forum.

Hi, this seemed as good a place as any to post this:

I have my FS700 with an Q7+ that i bought after this years IBC. I installed the 0,-1 and -2 LUTS (and many more) to use with the FS to get the result right. Buuuutttt, the 4K2HD i tried today still came out rather grainy/noisy. Certainly not as clean as i hoped for but the HQ file type cleans up rather great with neatvideo. However; I need to figure out wheter or not I'm filming this right. By browsing to and fro in this thread ive learned that the exposure values for black/grey and white are around (0 or 7),32 and 5x but need to higher if i expose correctly, IE: over expose 2 stops, hence the -2 on the LUT to get me to overexpose. I forgot the page where i saw those schematics by Nick Shaw... Now when i film something i set the a LUT, connect the tools to the LUT and expose from there. Today i filmed a person and exposed with Zebra 70 to get the skin where i wanted it to be. It still came out grainy/noisy. Should i set my zebra to a higher value? I'm really keen on getting skin right as i film people an awful lot (i film events from 15K visitors and up). I think that the trick is in the order of operations that i do but im not sure what i need to do in what order.

Are you applying the matching LUT in post in a program like Resolve or Premiere? The LUTs in the Odyssey show a preview of what the correction would look like later. The matching LUT can be downloaded from our website to then be applied in post so that you see exactly what you saw on the Odyssey OLED. There are instructional videos on our website to show how to apply these LUTs in post.

No, I'm trying to figure out wheter or not im doing something wrong at the recording fase. Right now its: Machines on, image or target in focus, Zebra on @ 70. LUT on and bump it up from say, F4.0 to F2.0. I record something and it comes out grainy. I can Apply a color lut and pick the 709-2 that i used in the Odessy but is staays somewhat grainy.

I should mention that i recorded in a very dark situation to test the noise results and such. Ill post an image in a little bit.

It seems that vimeo smoothed over a lot. I'm still a bit hazy on how to handle my work though. Currently the camera has a speedbooster and is set to 50P for slomo and regular video. If i understand the manual correctly the Q7 will copy these settings to the ProRes file and show it on the screen but it wont try to turn footage into 50p if it comes 25p out of the camer, right? the monitoring option is just for revieuwing, right?

Detail: My preset folder has 15 LUTs in it, theres 27 available on the CD website (not counting the built in or additionals) and it would seem that some LUTs would be counted double if i imported them all. Also the CD page says that it offers an FS700 Davinci LUT set but this downloads as an FS7 set.

I think you should be in contact with our support desk for detailed assistance. I'll go over this in a short, general way. For greater detail you can consult the various white papers and videos on our website.

Set your camera to S-Log2 with no additional gain applied so that it is at 2000ISO. Make sure to set your white balance correctly.

Set the LUT in the Odyssey7Q+ to the S-Log 2 two stope compensation LUT (SONY EE SL2 L709A-2). Adjust your exposure based on this LUT. Many people do this in different ways but if you are viewing the LUT it is WYSIWYG. I tend to suggest watching that highlights don't clip on the waveform and shadow areas don't fall too far into the darkness, and that generally the stuff you want to see as bright "proper" exposure be somewhere between 60-80 IRE. That's a nice, fat signal with some highlight range retained.

The LUT function on the Odyssey is for monitoring only and does not alter the recorded signal. When you import the footage into a program such as Resolve or Premiere, it will likely look quite overexposed. That's because you were viewing it on the Odyssey with a LUT that made everything appear two stops darker. To get it to look the same you need to use a matching LUT. These LUTs can be downloaded from our website. If you cannot find the correct ones (FS7 v. FS700) then please contact our support desk for assistance. The LUTs will download as standard Image Cube file format and can be easily loaded into your post program (consult our white papers and videos). Apply the LUT and you should see exactly what you saw on set on the Odyssey.

If the image is still noisy, there are two factors. One you may still be exposing a bit dark, and I suggest you experiment with different exposure levels. And two, this recording path introduces no noise reduction unlike the internal HD recording in the camera. You may simply need to add in a small amount of noise reduction through a plug-in software that will smooth out the image a bit. A few options have been mentioned on DVXuser as popular options in the past.

I was tempted to switch the gain up a stop but ill keep my finger of that. I'll be recording something tonight so i'll return when i finished the clip. I'll keep exposure as high as i dare to but in darkend surroundings its gonna be hard to get everything a stop or two higher.

A video with 4k2hd. It worked out great in some shots and a little less great on others. DOF and exposure is a bit hard still and i'm searching for a good level. I dont know how far i could push the mids back up if i recorded them rather dark. I'm not always able to overexpose and i just cant go to thin on my DOF. f4 1/100 woth 0 gain seem doable in darkend areas but still hard to do with the inevitable denoising. anyway, thanks for the tips so far. The best results were with the 709-2 LUT on but zebras still related to the basic recording istead of connecting them to the LUT. I was surprised to see that my F4 70-200 lens gave better results than the 16-35 f2.8 (version 1) that i borrowed.

lastly: is the use of a speedbooster in any way relevant or would i have to up 2 stops irregardles of the glassware on the cam?

Well a speedster gets more light to hit the sensor so that does help you. You would then choose your LUT system based on what you wanted the end result to look like, but now you'd be working with more light so you would have greater flexibility.

You do have the choice to have you meters such as the zebras read with the LUT applied if you wish. Simply select this either in the LUT menu or the Zebra's menu.
