Bunch of videos coming up. A tour of the new menus, a detailed explanation of the LUT system on the Odyssey and its signal routing capabilities, and anamorphic desqueeze. Plus another appearance by the Mitch puppet!

The Focus Assist has been completely revamped. It was accurate before but now is even more accurate. And when you use Pixel Zoom it doesn't zoom the Focus Assist, meaning that it is much more accurate in that mode.

If you are recording a 17:9 signal (4096x2160 or 2048x1080), you have the choice of viewing a 16:9 Center-Cut (what we've done up until now) or a 17:9 letterbox within the 16:9 frame. And just like in the new Anamorphic Desqueeze that view is also sent to the SDI and HDMI outputs.

One thing, I'm assuming the link to the new required ProRes Transfer v1.7 software utility will be updated soon? v1.5 shows up as the current one as of now.

FS7 & FS700 RAW users:

We have improved the colors in both RAW and Apple ProRes, particularly the skin tones. Welcome to a new camera.

We have also improved the shadow banding issue to some degree, and we are in active discussion with Sony to see what they can do on their part.

There is a detailed article on our website Knowledgebase on the subject.
https://convergent-design.com/produ...-and-processing-best-practices-fs7-fs700.html

Here's the shorthand version: We recommend overexposing by one or two stops and then correcting back in post. This will push the noise down into the blacks so you don't see it as much. It also raises significant image data into parts of the signal where more bits are allocated, so even when lowering the exposure in post there is a reduction in shadow banding. To assist in this, we have created some Exposure Compensation LUTs for each camera. These are not baked in but you can use them to judge proper exposure while shooting. We will expand our offerings as time goes on.

With the FS700 you can record RAW -> ProRes in S-Log2 or REC709(800%). We believe that the 800% version is better than the standard REC709 as it does not use a knee circuit to clamp down the upper exposure range, giving you greater exposure range at the top.

With the FS7 the camera must be set to CINE-EI and S-gamut3.cine/S-log3. Our image processing of the RAW signal is based upon this setting.

Anyone can confirm this and explain? recording in
REC709(800%) is better than Slog2? or in some specific cases/situation?

Sorry, I misspoke (mis-typed?). I meant to write that REC709(800%) is better than standard REC709. Standard REC709 clamps the upper exposure range with a knee circuit. Both S-Log2 and REC709(800%) do not engage the knee circuit.

I will edit my previous post.

Something I found that I don't think was in the release notes. When I power cycle the Odyssey now the buttons I had active before I powered down stay active on reboot! So I no longer have to reactivate Focus Peaking, guides and waveform each time I start the Odyssey. Thanks to Mitch and the team for including this.

There's a few hidden gems like that in there. When you update firmware your custom LUTs won't be erased either (I guess y'all would have discovered that with the NEXT update!).

Someone should grab a model and do a pre-upgrade and post-upgrade test to see what the improved color reproduction is. I honestly never saw any of the banding issues that people were making a big deal about, but maybe because I wasn't looking for them.

Definitely excited for the LUTs, though. Will be doing the upgrade later tonight and will try to convert some of my own luts to see how they load up on the Odyssey.

So quiet. I'm eager to hear what FS7 & FS700 owners think of the improved colors and LUTs.

FS700 Improved colors:

I just did some tests on my FS700 and loaded them up in Resolve. The Raw 4k recording still looks great. I didn't do a before and after test, but I can say the skin tones feel better for sure. Not scientific.

In Raw > Prores mode, the colors are way better and I didn't see the strange banding in skin in the transition from light to dark! Just a basic test, but definitely improved if not eliminated! Great work guys!
