GH2 No 25p possible in GH2 hack

can i therefore check pal>ntsc and expect stalin hack to convert my pal version to ntsc territory, meaning 1080/24p in 601?

if you switch to NTSC with the hack, you have to 1080/24pNative, 1080/24pW (60i wrapper) and 720/60p

Why is 25P such a deal-breaker for you? Every DVD player can handle both frame rates, so just shoot 24P. Online exhibition doesn't care whether it's 24P or 25P. I live in a PAL country and shoot 24P all the time. Unless you're shooting for broadcast in a PAL country...in which case I'm not sure why you'd shoot with a hacked camera anyhow. So I don't get why you can't just use 24P. I'm sure some of you can tell me, since you seem so crushed by the news.

+1
also in Pal land.

You'll get a full reaction as to why some of us are so disappointed over at Vitaliy's personal view website - it's the 25p Don't cry for me argentina thread.

Totally agree. I'm in Pal land. Never had a issue. Even used the gh2 on pro jobs (corporate/web ads) all been fine. Use CS 5 to export as 25p, clients can't tell the difference. If I was doing a broadcast job that really need 25p, I would rent a Af-100 ( using a hacked gh2 would scare the crap out of me) I would rather 60p then 25p anyway. Plus, it's still early days. The hack hasn't been out for even a month...

If I were to shoot in 24p, what should I use to transcode/export it at 25p? (I use Final Cut not Adobe)

I still intend on buying the GH2, shooting 24p then exporting it in 25p. How many of you guys do this?

The fact that Panasonic have dismissed 1080/25p upsets me greatly...though knowing there a bunch of other guys annoyed about this gives me some solidarity.

If the process of shooting in 24p and then exporting 25p isn't too complicated, will buy the GH2 this week. If it's too much of a hassle, I really don't want to reluctantly give in to the Canon 600D...

If you don't need an external monitor, and if you absolutely have to (like me) have 25p, then I would get a GH1 over the canon for video work. And IMHO, you'll be pretty upset how the timing of your carefully edited piece changes when you speed up (or slow down) by 4%.

You don't have to slow it down at the end, start editing in a 25p timeline and interpret your 23.976fps source clips as 25p. I'm not sure how it's done in FCP but there should be this option.

Changes that would disrupt the careful timings of my edited piece would bother me immensely. Surely there's a more efficient way of exporting 25p?

People on Vitaly's website have been making it out as if 24 to 25p conversion is no problem at all.

Hm, maybe I wasn't clear. If you make a 25p project, import your 23,976 fps GH2 footage and interpret those clips as 25fps, then you can edit as if you shot 25p. No timing changes, just render to 25p when you finished editing.

Each single footage clip will play 4% faster of course, so you'll have to adjust the audio, there's no way around this as it still is a workaround.

If you shot in 720/50p, and then in your NLE just exported to a 25p format... wouldn't that just look the same as if you had shot in 720/25p anyway? Or have I missed something??

Usually you would use a 1/100 shutter for 50p instead of 1/50 for 25p, so motion blur should be different. I'm not sure how visible the difference really is.

Audio isn't too much of an issue, as I'll mainly use the GH2 for adverts/music videos. If it as simple as you say, then that shouldn't be a problem.

You could theoretically use 1/25th of a second shutter with 25p. However, with true 50p that would not be possible. Luckily the GH2 will let you select 1/25th of a second shutter while in 720p @ 50 FPS mode. It essentially records 25p then. It also works with 1080i mode. It will switch to 1080p @ 25 FPS.

?
Can you explain what you mean?

Give it a try. Set the camera to record 1080i in manual movie mode. Set the shutter speed to 1/50th and start recording something that is moving. Then adjust the shutter down to 1/25th of second. View the video on a computer and disable deinterlacing in your media player. You will see that the interlaced artifacts disappear when the shutter speed drops below 1/50th of a second. It will actually seamlessly switch from 1080i/50 to 1080p @ 25 FPS if the shutter duration becomes longer than the frame rate can support. The footage will go from interlaced to natively progressive as the shutter speed drops below that threshold.

Hmmmmm...
I just tried it, on the GH2 LCD it indeed looks like progressive 25fps?!
Besides the fact that 1/25 shutter gives heavy motion blur, that's a very interesting finding considering possible hacks, no?

720P has less resolution and some including my sofware wont edit 24P[use one that does ]too old and tired to change now,1920x1080i is what i use and will have to live with.

The camera LCD is progressive and will always do the deinterlacing. You must watch the video on a computer with deinterlacing disabled to see the difference.

but watching 50i on the LCD looks fluid like 50p while 23,976 looks different. I just took a look at it in Premiere, it still seems to be interlaced? Just the motion blur is increased, which first made me believe it looked like progressive. Media Info and Premiere of course state it as 25 fps interlaced. I can't really find it to become progressive?!
