GH2 No 25p possible in GH2 hack

Annoying that there is no 720/25p straight out.

The latest PTool appears to have exactly this setting for AVCHD (in the end-user section), yet no-one seems to have reported trying it???

Grunf, are B-frames stable for you in 720P? If so, could you post your settings?

I believe there is a switch in new PTool allowing you to record 720p25 straight, so you don't need to throw away every other frame during editing and waste bandwidth encoding frames that are to be discarded.

GrahamH: I will post my settings when I come home. I get around 38Mbit gorgeous B-frame 720p50 with stock GOP. No mud enywhere.
Only problem is that you have to shoot a second of 1080 (p or i) after every power cycle before shooting B-frame 720p.

I hope that's been fixed, sounds like something that could get annoying after a while.

Grunf, it would be great if we could see some 720/25p results. Shooting 720/25p and then upscaling to 1080/25p will be fine for me.

Hasn't that been fixed in newest PTool? I'm not sure, thought so.

Nope. You can circumvent it by not using B-frames and just using higher rate with non B-frame codec (like GH1). Then it works all the time. But B-frames deliver better IQ for same bitrate.

1080i50 with B-frames works straight out of the box though. No need to "pre-shoot" anything.

the 720p 50 to 25p patch...didnt work for me

I just hacked my NTSC GH2 to enable PAL<->NTSC switching, and enabled the 25P option for 720 AVCHD. On my camera, at least, it does indeed produce genuine 720P25.

I have not played with bitrates as yet, and of course there are no B-frames, so I can't comment on the quality. But eyeballing it, it looked OK.

Wouldn't it be best if thousand of people could email the responsible people in Panasonic to make them change the sensor setup. I think I will sell my gh2 pretty soon if there will be no 25p mode....

any1 of you guys have read this post: http://www.eoshd.com/content/3814/panasonic-impressed-with-gh2-hack-vow-to-bring-25p-update

In an interview with
EPhotozine Panasonic talk X lenses (as first exclusively revealed by EOSHD last week) and the GH2.
Mr Uetmasu product developer:
A firmware update may be coming for the GH2 to add support for 25p, and additional improvements in video abilities. If there are features you want adding, contact Panasonic and let them know. They are aware of the work the “hackers” are doing and are impressed with their work, but that they (Panasonic) need to test everything / confirm there are no problems before rolling out updates. The GH3 is not due imminently, as the GH2 is still extremely popular, but that there is a high end GF series camera in the works.

what do you think ?

Please excuse my ignorance and feel free to point me to a threat or article that explains it - I'm still learning the finer details. Why is it bad not being able to shoot native 25p? South Africa also uses the PAL standard and I was just wondering what it means not being able to shoot native 25p? I mean does it mean what ever footage you shoot will be rejected for broadcasting? Does it mean you can't play video in X, Y, and Z situations?

Thanks.

The main problem is, if you are shooting for a PAL or 25p delivery and working with multiple cameras, throwing 24p in the mix is a bit of a pain. If you shoot single camera @24p then convert at the end, it's much more straight forward. There is also the issue of shutter sync with certain lights, although this can, and is, frequently worked around.

Every film is still shot at 24fps and played back at 25 here in Europe. They are just spedup 4%. It works well, no need for difficult conversions. Television world is 25.

Nowadays bluray and certain display sets can playback 24fps too in Europe.

Well really television world is 50i, and now sometimes 50p. And DVDs are encoded 50i even if the source is progressive. Until bluray there was no signifiant 25p delivery that I'm aware of.

If you want to use the gh2 for broadcast in pal countries, you MUST have 25p - this has been done to death over at personal view

And still 24fps movies are broadcast at 25 without any problems.

You will have only problems if you can't for some reason do 24-25p speedup or you have to mix materials with 25p cameras.

1080 at 25fps is coming with the new firmware in December, pretty sure about it. Same additional video modes as the GX1
