New Red Camera image!

In January 2008, Scarlet was announced.

In April 2008, Scarlet mock-ups appeared at NAB. The date "early 2009" was given for delivery.

In September 2008, Canon introduced the 5D2. In response to Canon as well as Nikon, Red scrapped their plans for the 2/3", fixed-lens Scarlet. They threw out the design and went back to the drawing board.

On November 13, 2008, drawings from this drawing board will be presented, laying out the new plan for Scarlet.

And Red says "delivery dates haven't changed much." Prototypes at NAB 2009 and delivery "after that." But everyone who wants a Scarlet will have one by the end of 2009.

Has any revolutionary new camera system ever gone from the drawing board to retail sales in roughly a year? Is there sound reason to believe this one will? Is Red's core competence speed in getting new products to market?

Is Red's core competence speed in getting new products to market?

I guess that remains to be seen. I hope it is, I am sure it will be a great camera but it is foolish to pin any work or hopes of shooting a project on the Scarlet becoming available. Even RED says that they will release it pretty much whenever they want. Could be 6 months, could be 3 years.

I vote for RED as coming up with the ultimate disclaimer on their products. They pretty much tell us, "we are going to give you all the golden ticket, but who knows when the gates to the chocolate factory will open? Whenever we want."

Didn't the guy who owns Red (or maybe the spokesman?) say they were embarassed for Canon on the release of the spec for the 5d II... then the next day scrapped 1 year's planning for Scralet.

Now, i've never used Red but it does look great.... but this kind of hyping, vapourware and mocking of their rivals leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Dammit... I'm not even in the market, and I check this thread a few times a day... Which I guess means that the RED hype machine has accomplished its mission.

Anybody care to cobble together a new speculative composite image, like LuckyStudio's a few pages back?

ACAM DII is the first of this new cameras. Thats why Red did change its design. It saw the design, and functionality of it. There is also a picture showing Red Ted Schilowitz face of concentration and hunger for details hahahahahhaa.

There's already been so much hype and speculation about what Scarlet will be like that the only way I'll be REALLY surprised by this camera is if they get God him self to descend from heaven to sell these babies a thousand bucks a pop...

Whatever tomorrow brings... no one can buy and shoot with epic or scarlet for maybe another 9 months - 15 months. I just wish those !@!#@#!@ conservatives at Canon (look at the new ver of XH-A1 ! what a farking joke) and Sony (who produces Nikon cmos chip and have 24 megapixel sensor on the A-900) will #@$@$@#$ wake up and offer us a true 35mm 1k camcorder by NAB 09. After all, they already have the technology as evident in Nikon D90 and Canon 5d Mk II.

I'm right there with ya.

If Nikon wakes up and smells the coffee, they could take a lot of market share from Sony, Panasonic and Canon by introducing a $6,000.00 Mini RED One with a Nikon mount. They could farm out the audio portion to a proven audio company and put their optics and imaging expertise to work. Unlike Canon, they have no video division that they have to protect.

I think that many of us would line up for a Nikon Video camera that uses a FF CMOS sensor with a Nikon F mount with killer audio and ergonomics. I love Nikon products and own three Nikon DSLRs and a mess of Nikon lenses. If I could get a super high resolution camera with superb low light capabilities, Nikon F mount, good audio and ergonomics, my HPX170 would be in the Marketplace tomorrow.

Nikon, go for this market, there is a lot of money and market share to be gained.

Don't forget the recording format. It would have to be something more trusted. Even if it was licensed from someone else.

I'd be in line for that and I wouldn't think twice about it.

I've been thinking the same thing for a few years. The target is so simple to see, yet these people just don't get it. Oh well...

JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000, JPEG2000!

....or Cineform (wich is also based on JPEG 2000).

Nikon can use the open source DNG RAW format. Nikon is going to have a product announcment this month entitled "BIG"announcement during WPPI in 2009. Who knows what it is going to be.... maybe a medium format camera ?

Ikonoskop is very close to reaching the holy grail with their A-cam dII. I wish Ikonoskop can offer a CCD camera with 35mm sensor instead of o2/3".

If we need to count on the japanesse giving us a "red replacement", it is going to be from Sony using their alpha line slr lenses. Then again, they have the f900 , f23 and f35 to protect. I am a strong feeling that even after tomorrow, the RED ONE is the only camera offering an affordable real s35mm video camera to us poor indie filmmakers.
