That picture makes no sense, are we really supposed to believe that's the side of the camera? It looks more like a blown up area of the back.

Yes. I think both images are portrayed as not being what they really are.

The one with all the buttons and d-pad resemble the back of a dslr area where the thumb would rest. Look at the ergonomics of the design. Clearly not the side of the camera....
