A girlie music video

Here's something different. I'm trying to get some practice in before my first music video shoot coming up in november, the lighting style of this one will be the total opposite of the real music video which is metal-type. I been studying on lighting for the past few days and finally got down to shooting something for fun. So I have 8 minutes of footage. I just picked out the best looking shots and placed them randomly on the timeline. Then the music comes underneath and then I rearrange the clips again. For lighting I use two 500 watts worklights from the local hardware store, I bounced one light off the wall, and i bounce another light on a white piece of paper. The light in the background is a 100 watt bulb. These lights are halogen.

So how does it look? hows the pacing? any comments/suggestions welcome.

Hiro, you know your shots are always nice to the viewer; nice choice in actress i think her expressions really brought out all your different angles. I thought it would be painful to listen to but your skills made it more visual. Nice light by the way.

Tight very professional! I know it was a test but it was good to the point where I wanted to see a performance and the male actor the story line.

that was very girlie hiro. But nice tight edits for a slow video. Are you going to do any fast paced tests since your shooting a metal video, or are you going to try something different with it?

The metal music video is going be fast paced, hell yea, its gonna be high energy..high everything when its done, your gonna be like wtf. But it will be at a speed where you can watch it, not like my zombie flick. I will try to do something different, to drift away from usual stuff you see. But I don't know, if work it works.

Good luck man. I'm doing a rap video in November. Maybe we can share our work with each other. I really like the stuff you do man.

Cool video man. You were right about it being a little girlie, but it really works.

Great lighting, great focus, and the cutting was good too. Thanks for posting it.

Looks good. Just some points. The "coming into focus" transition, is IMO, over done. As for the editing, it is good, but, based on the choice of shots, there is, again, IMO, an opportunity for a little more narrative flow. Since the song is lamenting about a past lover (if I am not mistaken), you could have changed the arraingment a little bit. The shots of the girl putting on the headphones are kinda out of place. To expound the little bit of narrative available, a common convention is to start with the girl putting on the headphones just as the music starts, then to the object of her attention, which would be the photo album. Use the images of the album as the anchor for the narrative, i.e., cut back to it more often.

Just some thoughts, good job.

hey. I didn't expect this thread to pop back up like it did, it's nice little surprise to have at 1:00 AM. david made a good point, what's IMO mean? anyway, david your right, now that I look at it, it would make sense to do the headphones first, then her looking at the photo album. I really wanted to work on the narrative side... maybe have a shot of her getting the album after sitting in that chair for so long.. anyway its just practice, but its something i'll have in the back of my mind when im doing the real vid. This video was also to test my directing skillz, .. Can you tell she hates being in front of the camera? mainly because of people like ICED_OUT! lol j/k seriously she hates it but I needed a subject at that moment and she happen to be there. mohaha. Just think of this video as an experience to when I have an opportunity to shoot a britney spears video.. eh? eh? eh? nah.
she was hot though...

thanks for the comment everyone, the metal music video starts on november 5. I'll see if I can work a deal with the band to show it to you guys. They don't want to release it until their album is ready. A pretty big label is looking at em, so its good gig for me. Hopefully something can come of it, if not... i got a music video under my belt, and this one lol.

Ramon,
while it is "girlie" I thought it was done well and on par with what I'd be skipping past on the tv (he he). your actress did seem uncomfortable to me, but as you said this was a test video and I thought the lighting was done well. Can't wait to see your hand at metal!

What lense did u use for this? This is the first video you've ever posted with the superb quality that you've been shooting with ever sense. I didn't read that you bought the Letud 35 yet... or is this just great because of the lighting or the Quicktime/Mac?

looks pro! & i don't know why but it feels more like a commercial, maybe the sharpness of the pictures?

Your girl has a beautiful voice. Has she started her own music career yet? She does so well singing other people's songs flawlessly on YouTube I'm sure she'll do well once her own CD is out.

nice work, i'm learning to shoot music videos too. one comment: i thought the cuts were too quick. Before my eyes could settle on one cut, you've already gone to the next and it kept happening throughout. Maybe its just my eyes :)
