New Firmware Out

My bad, didn't mean to throw a molotov there.

But then I go and help a friend with a nano budget music video (country!! gahhh!) yesterday and get stuff like this: (shot flat too)

...and I forgive Canon for releasing these HDSLR's half-baked.

Damn Elton!!!! That's a bad-ass still.

Wtf please post footage. LOL

Is that from the Nano Flash!?!!?

Man Elton, what lens did you have on it for this shot.

That isn't good looking video...it only seems like good looking video....VERY good looking video...but it isn't really...actually, it's awful.

Wait what, you guys don't see all that Alisasing/Moire, and frame binning in this pic. You guys are so amatuer.

Elton, you should hurry up and return your camera, cuz its obviously not the second coming.

Anyone who looks at that image and thinks, WOW, is sooooo mistaken. The 7D/5D's are soooo bad, at filming, we should all just toss our cameras into the trash right now.

Ok, full disclosure:

It's an uncorrected 5D2 video frame. We shot 30p to be slowed down to 24p for the video. Changed the audio for her to sing to. Just wanted that slightly trippy effect. I will be using the 7D on another shoot for this piece.

I have no doubts that I could basically get the same look with the 7D, I just had a few lenses with me and wanted the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 to have the full FOV.

Dude I wondered how you got that insane Bokeh. It was either a 1.2 aperture or full frame. I said it. LOL. Regardless, I want to see footage.

Looks sick, man.

Thanks Kholi. No nanoFlash, just miserable old no-B-frame 38 mbs h264. ;)

I'll post 7D stills when we resume shooting.

More grabs:

I know the Moire completely makes me go into convulsive eye spasms. Elton why would you put images in the forum that are obviously hazardous to our health, and not warn us. At least the surgeon general makes the tobacco companies put an identifier on their products.

Thats it maybe from now on when anyone wants to post any DSLR footage, or stills, they have to place a caution identifier in the thread category. That way I can brace myself for the horror that ensues after clicking into it.

Test has been run. Shot in "neutral" mode, with zero sharpening, using a Zeiss ZF 50mm lens at f/5.6. Tripod was locked down, absolutely nothing changed between the first shot and the second, other than the firmware. Shot in 720 mode and 1080 mode, then updated the firmware, and shot again in 720 mode and 1080 mode.

Here are pixel-for-pixel extractions of each shot:
7D-720-Trumpets-v107-v109.jpg

7D-1080-Trumpets-v107-v109.jpg

Conclusion: absolutely no differences detected. No improvement whatsoever in version 1.09 firmware, regarding aliasing or moire or pixel-binning or anything else. (nor was there claimed to be any, in the firmware release notes).

You know, I just think Canon somehow, someway, just cannot give up frame mode. The video guys just had to soil that wonderful DSLR look. I think it switches to interlace emulation on-the-fly (as a filter before line skipping the twittered pixel bin) and then applies the F mode mojo we've all come to adore.

Here is a quick test i did with the 1.7 firmware before i upgraded to 1.9

Hey Barlow,

What a joke, huh?

What do you get when you graft a 7D to a hummer?

$5000.00 poorer?

Everyone wants to see in the dark but, shesh, I'm pretty ugly with the lights "on"

See you tomorrow - go to bed!

Wrong thread?

Here is a quick grab of a short I'm working on, shot all on the 7D, and you obviously can see how putrid this camera really is. I mean I almost puked when I saw the horrible way it handled theses Flat Settings. I almost would like to :violent5: this camera, but I'm not sure if my insurance will cover the damages.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic (there's a lot of that going around it seems  ) but a bit of noise reduction and colour curves helps a little. Though, the sharpness (or lack of it) is really noticeable in that shot.
