New Firmware Out

Sorry if this clogs the screen. I can change it to the thumbnail, but this shows what everyone wants to know in one screen.

720 still looks ropey, but 1080 seems to have improved considerably. Be interesting to see it on Barry's chart since we already have 'before' pics from that one, but these images are certainly encouraging.

If this is correct and it has been improved, it rather suggests that the pixel binning etc. is actually at least party controlled by software rather than being all in hardware.

I'll put it to the chart in the morning and we'll see what difference it makes!

:) Since you're offerring (and I doubt I have to tell you this) - do you think you might have time to reshoot the chart before updating the firmware... then again after updating?
(that way there aren't any 'but the conditions were different' variables/complaints)

Just a thought.
If I have the time tomorrow I may do some test shots in that same way -
unfortunately I don't have the super duper test charts on hand that you do.
:)

FYI Barry, if you shoot a chart and then update firmware after that, all the settings remain unchanged post update (and the update took ~ 3 minutes) so it wouldn't be difficult to do what Luis is requesting.

I've been trying alternate lenses and settings for a few hours now. I look forward to Barry's chart, but I'm 90% sure that it will be the same. 720p mode is still a mess, 1080 might be improved, but I doubt it.

I look forward to the real chart

im assuming you have downressed the still ?

if so the 1080 still looks soft as IMO

I just think this camera is soft which is a big concern

admittedly im not too experienced at judging video grabs

Since you had a 5D, do you think it's softer than the 5D? I thought they were pretty much same IQ 5D/7D?

Stupidly I didnt do side to side tests, relying on mr blooms good reports, and desiring to cash in quick I sold the 5

I think it is softer indeed by a factor of about 1.6

I also thinkg there is something funny happening due to the codec, meaning that complex shots with detail and motion (steadicam, wide etc) are softened even more

meaning that talking hads at 80mm look fine while wides, and tracking shots look poor

i might put it up against my ex1 but ive always found that soft too compared to the 5d

Does it skip lines only vertically ?
If you press zoom button on DSLR then moire/stairstepping disappear.
It comes back when you hit record tho.

I see some are reporting better 720p video with the new firmware!

See here: http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-19128-Canon+7D+Firmware+Update…+Bye+Bye+Artifact!.html
That's completely and entirely ridiculous. Look at the text on the card, LTD is totally out of focus in the top shot, and sharply in focus on the bottom shot. Look at the card on the right, "cedex 09" is sharp in the top shot, blurred to illegible in the bottom shot. So the aliased line in the top shot is in focus, and in the bottom shot it's out of focus. It's the change of focus that makes the line look better.

Anyway, chart before firmware update, followed by chart after firmware update, is coming up within the next couple of hours.

to me some of these 'Canon Meet the ..." tests are somewhat unreliable, too many variables. The footage I have shot looks great to me, no aliasing softness etc. Yea if you turn down all the sharpness and contrast on the camera you will get soft looking images, duh. And these settings are on not the same on different camera brands and models. What is important is the great footage we have seen for ourselves.

Yes that happens.

Yes, that's exactly what happens.

The EX1 is much sharper than the 5D.

Try Safari, for some reason Firefox didn't work for me.

Just rough impressions of the update it looks like color is improved, and 1250 iso looks noiseless to me. And looks like there's a lot less color moire is present.
