C100: New C100 Coming down the line?

I think canon will surprise us this time with a more well rounded camera but I know a bit was far fetched

Canon's generally pretty good at looking at the whole market and assessing what features a product does and doesn't need. They definitely almost never 'over-feature' a camera, which is something I think annoys a lot of people given what Sony does. They are on the back foot compared to Sony, and definitely lack certain flashy features. They have the image quality down, but not the frame rates, and it seems like they'll always be a half step behind Sony. They've only just added on-chip ADCs, and definitely haven't refined them as far as Sony.

My hopes for the C100 mk3 would be to have the C300 II sensor, with the extra DR, and some sort of usable 120 fps. I don't think it'll out do the FS5 on paper, but at the very least I hope it keeps up in 4K and bit depth.

If Canon fulfilled the C100 MKIII wish list, it would once again make their C300 line irrelevant. Everyone would buy the C100 mi III. Why would they do this? If they did then the price would be right up there close to the C300 MKII.

I agree with those who think that the C100 MKIII will simply be the C100 MKII with 4k. There is no way they will give it features that the C300 MKII lacks. Still HDMI only, I would be amazed if they give it 4k 60p. After shooting for a bit with the C300 MKII, it really is quite an amazing piece of gear. Really all it lacks for me is 4K 60p and I can live without that feature as I rarely use it. Many feel the sweet spot is being able to shoot the 1080/2k 444 12 bit, which intrigues me more than 4K. If I shot music videos and commercals, the lack of 4K 60p would be a huge issue but for my mostly doc/corporate/BTS stuff, who needs slow motion? The C100 MKIII will be a nice camera but will lag in features behind the Sony FS5/FS7 and it would be strange if it cost any more or less than $6k, possibly $7k if Canon adds something REALLY innovative but that would be unheard of. Really hoping the C300 MKII drops to $9,999.00 soon, then I will buy it. $11,999.00 isn't unreasonable but by the time you spec out batteries, cards, a Wooden or Zacuto kit for it, possibly a new Sachtler, you are back up to spending $17k. $10k for the camera plus $5k for support would be better.

I shoot with both my c100 and c300 quite often and have no issues but I would like an upgrade. In all actuality I think we will get high frame rates (120 at 1080 and 60 at 2K 422), higher bit rates, and more in the colorspace realm. I know it'll be a great camera and I'm really interested to see what route they go with recording media

An interesting/daring move by Canon would be to lower C300 MKII to $10,000 and release C500 MKII for $20,000. There's enough room to slide C500MKII in between 300II and 700, the latter of which is in the mid-$30's for the basic shooting package to ~ $50,000 for the Raw/Codex. IMO, C300MKII would clean up the market at $10,000 and C500MKII could do likewise, depending on what it delivers.

I've shot a little with the same prototype C700 that was used to shoot "The Calling". I recently interviewed a good sized group of working DPs and I have interviewed several others for articles I am writing. The consensus is that the C700 is a great camera but massively overpriced for the market. I am hearing that it should sell for $20 to $25k when at least for a while, it will sell for $10k more than that. I don't see a C500 MKII coming, if you listen, really listen to what Canon says, the C300 MKII IS the C500 MKII, they just called it the C300 MKII because of brand recognition and success of the original C300. The C300 MKII is not a mere evolution of what the C300 MKI was, it was/is something totally new if you look at the power of the options/various output resolutions all at once from various outputs, plus the proxy recording, data rates with CFast cards, etc. Someone at Canon USA told me this, whether you agree with it or not, this is how Canon sees it.

I don't see the C100 MKIII having anything (other than perhaps something small) that the C300 MKII does not have, that would be marketing suicide. FWIW, I don't agree with KenFTW, I don't think we will get high frame rates (120 at 1080 and 60 at 2K 422), higher bit rates (the bit rates obvisouly have to be higher for 4K versus AVCHD 1080 on the existing cameras), and more in the colorspace realm (you mean 444 like the C300 MKII but on the C100 MKIII?), those seem largely like wishful thinking and would be totally out of character for Canon. Most likely would be to just take the C100 MKII and let it record the existing 4K output of the sensor and that's it, that camera would still be a seller for $6k. For the most part, Canon is not a feature innovator at all. The bottom line is that Canon has the best color science on the market other than Arri, while Sony gives you the most bang for the buck as far as features, they kind of have to because their color science generally is lousy. Canon charges a premium and slowly drops the price over time based upon the waves of buyers. People like me won't buy until the camera is on it's second wave of price reductions, hence me waiting for the C300 MKII to drop to $9,999.00. If it doesn't, I won't buy it.

It will be interesting to see what they show at NAB. Who knows? We could all be wrong since we are just guessing.

C300MKII at $10,000. C500MKII at $20,000. C700 Raw/Codex at $40,000.

With this, the question becomes whether C500MKII is a stripped down C700 or a loaded C300MKII. If it's the latter, then there's your price drop and things begin to align again.

PS. Don't forget to link the article when it comes out.

PPS. If C100 MKIII/C200 comes out, it'll be 5DMKIV in a C100 body.

I would be surprised if the C100 III even has the higher bit rate MXF. My guess is 100 Mb/s 4K AVCHD and full sensor DPAF as the major improvements. Canon will stick with SD cards. That is the the C100 market. And, it will sell.

They can also go MPEG, as in 5D MKIV and 1D X MKII.

But that isn't the targeted market for the C100. The C100 is targeted at events and interviews with low bitrate files. I would much rather go straight to Prores with an external recorder than MJPEG. Also, I'm not sure which SD cards can handle 4K MJPEG.

Many can...4K/24p is only 500 Mbps (62.5 MB/s).

I would only spring for it if it had SDI. HDMI is killing me, I have been going through a lot of C100 to Ninja Blade cables lately , have tried coiled, longer with loops, right angle plugs, etc. and they all kind of suck. I am scared that the HDMI connection on the camera may get too loose and then I'll have to send it to Canon. I would say that HDMI is my main beef with my C100, everything else I either love (the image quality, sound quality, ergonomics) or can tolerate (DPAF only in the center, useless VF, the need to black balance all of the time). A C100 MKIII with SDI and 4k would be a winner for me. I doubt they will include it but one can wish.

Since we're speculating ... I mean, analyzing a bunch of factors, my take is that 5D MKIV (with an APS-C sensor) in a C100 body would allow for a lot of corporate synergy and cost savings.

Obviously, the other way for Canon to look at it is as an upscale XC-15. Or, to hark back to the recent past, they could come out with a 1D CII by giving XII a C-Log in addition to a few other video features.

At the moment, they're protecting C300MKII and FS-7 by not having a ~ $6,000 4K camcorder style model. But me thinks, soon they will.

They didn't announce any cameras this past NAB so the joke doesn't have the same effect as it once did, lol.
