My day with the AF100...

I have years of experience as a MythBreaker...

But yeah, kids, don't try that at home...

I'mma bust out that spray can on the next joker who complains about noiz, yo?

I realize you're joking, but honestly what's with the hostility here about people who are making very similar observations about noise? And I'm not talking about wild claims about the GH2 or whatever being "superior". I'm simply talking about people like myself on this forum, who do this work everyday, for our careers, making an observation. Does it mean there's a problem with the AF100? Your test? All of our monitors? Maybe yes, maybe no, maybe a combination. Are we seeing it because our blacks aren't as crushed? Why am I seeing it from your test footage, when I other Af100 footage is much cleaner, and the F3 of course pristine, on the same plasma screen? I don't have the answers, but simply making an observation should not result in this bullying and tantrum making. It sets a bad precedent for the rest of the forum. Someone else's opinion doesn't "make" another person rude or intolerant, that's a choice that is made.
When noise exists it becomes more visible as you bring up the black level. Compression will create large blocks of it, but it generally won't create noise. If noise isn't there to begin with, bringing up the blacks doesn't make it. It just makes it more apparent.

BH... Not all opinons are the same, warrented or indeed valid. I found that as a very interesting comment that Fran Lebowitz said in her new doc. Not everyone has to have the same esteem with their opinons. Maybe some facts would warrant such commentary but it's just all opionons and conjecture. It's like when I was in Boston and I had to fly home to FL cause a client couldn't play the DVD but when I got here she was all redfaced cause she was trying to do that on a CD player...

In all graciousness how do we or anyone else know what you have and what you do for a living? I believe wholeheartedly in Barry's assessment and when he says one thing that's all I need to hear. He's not a fan boy, a nay sayer or drinking anyone's koolaid. Just as when I praised the 150 afterwards and helped others to decide cause I put up side by side shots of the HVX and the 150.. I guess I was credible cause of my participation and due dilligence.

In all due respect, Barry has earned a huge amount of prestige equity. Now if you turned out to be Lars Von Trier then you'd get some props too....

I apply my own observations and critical thinking to discern truth. There is a scarcity of good critical thinking happening anywhere in general, particularly in this discussion. Duplicate observations warrant further investigation. Period.

It may be that a $5000 camera is not going to work for me, and I will need to invest in the F3, or it may in fact be that the Af100 will be satisfactory. I am trying to make that determination, and discovery of evidence, observation, analysis, are the methods I use to do that. I do not rely solely on the word of one individual.

No to be rude, but your empiricism is flawed in that you cannot test your rationals and observations against a natural observational experiment. Therefore, although critical, your conclusions are, at best, hypothesis until you yourself get to test. Denigrating the testers is not the way to get the answers.

But you are not basing anything on your own experimentation, none but a few of us can, so it becomes counter productive to insist rather than question. A more Socratic approach would probably be better than a purely scientific one until more people can get their hands on one, until then we have to question the few instead of accosting them across threads.

Sorry, but just an observation. I apologize in advance if I came across in a disrespectful or adversarial way. As a person who's career is not only producing content, but also teaching it's production, I am just as interested as you in answers and mean no offense.

I have not denigrated testers, as you say. I have offered opposition to people who are name-calling those who dissent from the opinion that there's no evidence whatsoever of an issue which warrants further investigation.

You're right, I have no control against which to reliably test this footage. What I do have, is about 7 or so other Af100 tests, most from Japan, a few from Europe. Plus, theSony F3 short. I have played them all back, full res, through a PS3 from an external drive, HDMI, to Panasonic plasma. For whatever reason, this test is exhibiting more noise than all the others. I do not fully understand the reason, but I want to know why. It's that simple. That should not threaten or dishearten anyone. I seek answers, because I am weighing the decision to stay with the Af100, or instead go with the F3. There are cost, benefit, quality variables I must weigh for my situation and tastes. Seeking answers to questions is how I gain knowledge. This is part of that ongoing process.
