MPEG Streamclip on PC, Premiere Pro

Selecting 24p does not change the footage in the coverted file. It's still 30p when Mpeg Streamclip finishes. That is what I wanted to test.

You are converting the file to an Avid DNxHD file. There are many options in Mpeg Streamclip. This is just an excellent codec. There are many others that have merits also.

i converted to 720 / 30p and it came out choppy yet audio matched up with video. I give up. Time for macbook pro and final cut pro with prores.

While I wish you the best with your MacBookPro and FCP, you are not going to escape the fact that if you are going to be successful with your camera, you are going to have to learn about it, and it's workflow.

There are people on MacPros and MacBookPros having the same difficulties that you are facing right now, and for the same reasons. They do not understand their tools, and rather than try to understand HOW the tools work, they want quick answers. They are failing just like you are.

I am not here to tell you how to spend your money. Maybe the Mac will make everything magically easier for you. I cannot say. What I can say is that I and moving Avid DNxHD files back and forth with my editor who is on a MacPro, and I am on a PC and we are currently working on a 5d project. Both of us have taken the time to truly learn our tools, and the transfer between us is absolutely seamless. We trade 5D files twice a week.

Again, best of luck, and I am very sorry I was not able to help you solve your problem.

I don't understand what we are converting to. H.264 1080p to ?

Perrone I wish I had more people in my life who try as hard as you and I thank you! I know I will eventually get it. I believe there is a faster workflow in FCP. I think it will let me be more creative. I will still need to use adobe pp for blue ray since the MBP doesn't do that.

Yes but what "IS" prores 1080p or DNxHD. We are taking a 12 bit stream down to 8bit?

Oh, I think I see where you are going.

No, in the case of ProRes, you are taking an 8 bit 4:2:0 color stream to 10 bit 4:2:2 color. In the case of DNxHD, you are taking an 8-bit to either an 8 bit 4:2:2 or 10 bit 4:2:2.

The codecs you are going TO are vastly superior to what is coming out of the camera.

It's true. I've been messing around with DNXHD and I really couldn't believe how much better footage holds up to color grading and the like. It's well well worth file sizes expanding by 3-500% depending on what your end product will be.

Ok now I'm in screwed. Client want's it in True HD which means Blu ray, wich means I have to do it on adobe pro on my pc. Is there another way to convert besides streamclip and DNxHD. Specifically the streamclip part.

WTH is TrueHD?

I just made it up. I meant to say they want it on blu ray, not on just high definition dvd. You can't get 1080p on regualr dvd, right?

Well yes, you can, and I've done it. BUT, there is no guarantee they'll be able to play it on a BluRay player. Some players do fine with it, others can't handle it. I'll write our short projects out to DVD instead of Bluray to save costs and because I've got so MANY blank DVDs, but I am also able to specify which BluRay players we buy in the building, so I know they will work.

In your case, you'd likely be better off doing a BluRay.

Hey,

So I have downloaded MPEG streamclip, the Avid codec. I have successfully converted my 7D 107 meg file to a 455 meg AVI file (RATHER LARGE).

My only issue now is that i can't open the file, my computer doesn't recognize it ( be it in media player classic, quicktime or windows media player ) and in Premier Pro cs3 it just opens the file as a sound file with no video.

Any ideas?

I am probably missing something here but is there a reason you don't just throw all the files on the timeline and just export them to a DVCpro 100 P2 movie so you can edit in realtime?

Yes,

DNxHD is not an AVI file type. It's a quicktime file type. So choose "Export to Quicktime" in Mpeg Streamclip.

And yes the files are quite a bit larger. Welcome to working with insanely compressed original files. Consider that the DNxHD fiiles are compressed 10:1 over Uncompressed HD. Your h264 source is compressed ~40:1 which is why it's so dang hard to edit.

Wowz. So i got it to work, but now im noticing HUGE HUGE HUGE changes in image (either contrast or gamma, not sure )

It just flattens the image outright and slightly changes the hue (more green) too. I am not able to play the files back in real-time at anything greater than 10 fps even on draft mode, which is already better than the mov file type straight from the 7D, but still not what i expected.

What's up with the huge image shifting?

With MPEG Streamclip you must be rendering to Quicktime to gain access to the DNxHD codec. I had these problems too at first.

Well, I don't know, because I don't know how you did your conversions. Nothing should shift more green regardless unless you have really crazy stuff going on in your machine.

Post screenshots of your settings as you encode, and let's see what it looks like.

Here's what I have:
