T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

Wow just installed the latest ML, and the continuous recording works great! Once it hits the 4gb limit it starts a new record although it does seem to take about 3 seconds to restart judging by the timestamp on the file. But still awesome!

Here's my experiences just now with the Jan 7th build:

My god, I am now monitoring audio through the USB. Amazing!
I just put the Canon miniUSB to 3RCA into the camera then ran a couple of adapters to get the 2 RCA audio outs to a Female mini. Ran headphones into the F-Mini.

Couple of questions though.
What levels are recommended for the Audio Analog Gain setting ?
I have mine set to 20 right now using the internal mic. Should this vary depending on what kind of source you use?

SameQuestion re: for Audio Output Vol.
I have mine at 0

I did notice when first checking it that some voices sounded like they were overmodulated. If I hear that does that mean my audio is really overmodulated or can it just be lousy monitoring circuit or mismatched headphone impedance?

Also I'm seeing alot more stuff all over my screen than I did with the Jan 2nd build. Too much for my taste.
Some is just very small weird numbers that keep changing. I see that on the bottom of the frame and also about 8 lines of some kind of code across the top of the frame that keep changing. I can get rid of the lines at the top of the frame by half closing the shutter - they stay gone then.
However the numbers at the bottom remain and get in the way of the Canon's regular shutter and f stop readouts.

Also there are now more very small readouts across the frame telling me the shutter speed, ISA, f stop , and something I don't recognize that says AE 0/8.
I don't need to see that stuff because the Canon's normal readouts tell me that in nice large numbers already.

Any way to get rid of some of this stuff?

Also one peculiar issue.
I accidently ran "Run Stack Focus" while in movie mode, and the screen went black started shooting a few stills then said Busy and then just stayed black. I turned off the camera and removed the battery and it recovered but it was a little scary.

Thanks Alex,

Lenny Levy

Audio Output Vol: I have no idea what this does (audio code is ported from 5D2).

> I see that on the bottom of the frame and also about 8 lines of some kind of code across the top of the frame that keep changing.

Did you enable draw_event? If not, post a screenshot.

> shutter speed, ISA, f stop , and something I don't recognize that says AE 0/8.
AE 0/8 is exposure compensation, in 1/8 EV steps.

These info displays were requested by other ML users.

.

OK if I toggle "Toggle draw-event" it changes the code at the bottom and now when I hit the half shutter the code at the bottom goes away.
Thanks I get it all now.

Audio Output Volume seems to raise the level of my headphone volume.

I guess people wanted shutter speed, ISA, f stop etc because they don't want to keep the larger Canon readouts on the screen while shooting. I could see that. Great. Thanks again and Thanks for responding to this forum so much.

In a future build would it be possible to swap the Aperture and Shutter functions? As in, be able to just turn the wheel for aperture and do the AV+Wheel combination for shutter?

Edit: OR EVEN! Make the wheel assignable? Like, it could be set to dial in WB or ISO through ML? I hate when people come on this thread with no coding knowledge and DEMAND things from a1ex. Instead I'm just throwing these ideas out there with no coding knowledge to see if any make sense.

But we need that,it shows accurate real values ,big canon ISO and Shutter values are not always 100% true ones since ISOs/shutter speeds were unlocked, big value wont display ISO 115 or shutter 53 and stuff like that.

the mini usb for t2i connector has 6 pins but is built on a 11 pins connector
if you look at it with the large side down, the contact are visible at the top (small side)
ground is pin 1 and 6 (most external pins) while Left and right audio are the center pin (3 and 4)
mini usb for data use the other side of the connector (where there is only 5 pins).
so if you try to modify an mini usb cable, chance are you will miss the necessary pins on the correct side.
Some HTC connector are compatible (they have 11 pins) , but the cheap headphone connectors you can found on ebay use
totally different pins, so chances are that not only the adapter does not work, but the wires for the right pins are missing either.

For the people outside the USA, here is the same product / store.
Order from their website if amazon says they can't ship to your address.

Edit for price, this deal got a bit colder, they tell you a shipping price, and then email you an updated price after you give them all your info.
The shipping went from 4$ on the bill, to 12$ on the updated email.
They told me 12$ is their standard price to ship under 1lb outside USA and that the bill price is a temp price. For a technology store, they sure don't know how to run a shopping cart script.

I canceled my order, but I'm leaving the link in case anyone is willing to pay 15$ for 1 cable rather then 2$ at a dollar store for adapters.

I could be wrong about this, but I recall HTC's extra pins for audio/video out over USB were on the side of the connecter, effectively changing its shape on that side to be flat rather than the angle you normally find on a mini USB plug:

The end result is that you could still plug in a normal USB and it would just not "see" the extra pins. Canon appears to have done something similar, however they chose to extend their adapter out on the smaller side, like this:

So, in summary:
NO, you can't just modify a normal USB cable for this because Canon added extra pins for this function that aren't found on a normal USB. The same is true for the way HTC did it, which is different even than this one (so you can't use an HTC one to modify either way).

If you somehow manage to get a canon-shaped USB head, here is the pinout someone posted on their flickr account:

But, managing to find such a cable in the first place would be a feat in it of itself! Best bet perhaps is to modify the A/V cable that comes with the camera...

Personally, I recommend an adapter such as the one in the post above this. For testing, I'm personally using a headphone Y-adapter splitter I happened to have around, and only using the female ends of it. However, I wonder if having the male end exposed adds extra static, etc, to the sound quality.

The only cameras I've seen get ruined are those who didn't follow the directions or used the wrong base firmware to begin with

AFAIK nobody has irrevocably bricked a 550d, so maybe "ruined" isn't the best word to be using. As long as you follow instructions you have nothing to worry about.

What cable is this? Did one come with my camera and I can't remember? Or where do you order it? I did a quick search for a specific canon usb to rca and can't find anything.

Look in the box.. i remember seeing it, but its one of those misc cables that you dont think about and leave in the box :)
