T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

I've actually wondered about using this with a firestore myself as well. Would solve 12-minute clip length issues and codec preferences. I suppose all the ML firmware would need to do is turn off the screen icons so clean video only passes thru, and keep the camera from shutting off due to inactivity, right?

Exactly, to keep the camera turned off in the debug menu> save power> off and resolved, then the video menu> draw global> off and have a clean output

No, is 480 if you record on camera, but if you use the HDMI output cleaned and record it on an external device or computer, not recorded on camera, you have 1080 and the codec you want

I had't thought of that, but it's totally obvious, so: you're right, sorry

As far as I remember when testing both the 5D2 and the 550D with the Blackmagic Intensity ... the output is pillar boxed as well as interlaced which borked the 24P feed. I'll have a look again with ML on the 550D but I don't think this tree is worth barking up due to these issues ... unless they too have been fixed in ML

Hey everybody, today I used Magic Lantern for the first time! Shooting a short film...

It was nice to have the histogram and the zebras around, but unfortunately for me none of the shutter speeds helped me eliminate a TV flickering... it's an old TV, probably that's why.

The manual kelvin WB balance is also great.

I ran into one problem though, towards the end of the shooting I received twice a buffer icon followed by 'automatically stopped' message. No takes ruined (I think both times were as soon as I pressed record), but I just wanted to point this out as feedback. I'm using SanDisk Extreme Class 10 16Gb cards, WITHOUT QS on.

Another feedback is that it would be cool to keep the display settings after the camera turned off for power saving, I had to constantly go back to the menu and set histogram and zebras to off.

Thanks for everything and I really hope this keeps growing!!

You can save your set up in the Debug menu, never used it yet, but I'm sure that will solve your zebra problem.

Canon firmware takes care of the flicker regardless of the shutter speeds. For example, there's no flicker under fluorescent lights regardless of the shutter speed. But if I change from PAL to NTSC, flicker appears (and stays there at all shutter speeds).

Oddly enough, in manual mode LV I get no flicker regardless of PAL/NTSC setting or shutter speed (but in other modes, I do get flicker).

I'm using SanDisk Extreme Class 10 16Gb cards,!

I'm using the exact same card, are you also having trouble with recording at Qscale above -11/-12? In most situations anything above -11 or -12, recording will stop after a second.

All the other features are nice, little convenient things.

But getting a clean PAL 1080p/25 or 1080i/50 output would boost the usability of the 550D T2i a significant amount.

Don't think me ungrateful, but gimme 4:2:2 8- or 10-bit straight off the sensor and I'll be happy if the ML firmware added nothing else! I think most of the time should be spent getting this to work rather than some of the fiddly suggestions on the ML board.

Unless it's not going to be possible, in which case will someone please put me out of my misery :(

I knew this, but you made me realize it will be more practical for me to keep zebras and histogram OFF as default and turn them on only when needed :).

Are you sure? At least it's not always true, with my computer screen for example the T2i always flickers, but when using 1/57 ML's shutter, problem solved.

I didn't try recording for long periods of time, but I just recorded 1 minute at -14 without any problems.

Any update on headphone monitoring? is it possible to use some sort of HDMI converter to monitor during recording or does the LCD go blank when using AV or HDMI out?

It was just an empirical observation under some fluorescent lighting @ 50 Hz. When bwwd asked me to enable custom shutter speeds (for reducing flicker), I've noticed flicker does not change at all with shutter, so I thought the hack didn't work.

Or maybe my camera is already behaving strange due to experiments :P

I think it definately is, shutter speeds are absolutely supposed to change flickering I believe.

In my case, using 1/57 with my monitor fixes flickering.

Canon's defaults couldn't fix it.

here in Europe with the 50hz frecuency, using the 1/45 fixes the monitor flicker

about the hdmi ouput i think is in 3:2 no 16/9, Is it so? but it was not a big problem

I noticed that when using the RCA outputs to my standard def monitor (don't have an HD portable monitor) it was square screen, not not 16/9. Which is a little weird because my monitor is widescreen and therefore had black bars on the left and right. When shooting, it letterboxes the top and bottom as well, so my video ends up in a bounded box in the center. I found this kind of stupid, but it serves the purpose of setting up the shot from an angle, so I just go with it.
I was not aware this was the case when using hdmi as well! Why would that be? Do non-widescreen HD monitors even exist??

Meanwhile, has anyone else ever had trouble playing back audio on the camera with ML?
When I go to play to preview a clip on the camera, the audio seems to spurt for a moment, then stop (the video continues). Why would this happen? If I pause the playback, or jump to a frame and hit play again, you can hear another spurt of audio, then again it stops. Weird. Is this a documented issue or does anyone know why it would happen?

Ok so I'm sort of new at this whole Magic Lantern thing so forgive me for the stupid question.

But when you're making your SD card bootable for Magic Lantern are you still able to use that card to store footage? And if that's the case do I have to make all of my cards bootable to use Magic Lantern on all the cards?

I'm still biding my time to use it until I actually need it for a shoot, but it definitely looks way too cool to pass up.

Yes, the bootable card is also your storage card. Yes, you do have to make all cards bootable if you want to use Magic Lantern. Really simple to do.

Yes you need make bootable all your sd card, and are still able to store,

install it, has proven to be safe and it's great

PD sorry i post at same time
