Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Ridiculos price point.... Also, they are not worlds first. Komputerbay came out with 256gb cards in august and are about to do 1200x speed cards.
And why do they keep mentioning 65mb/s write speed? Thats not enough for raw... Dont we need atleast 83.2 mb/s?

So many are waiting for an SSD solution for the 5D. It seems like quite technical hurdle. I hope they can get is done as an investment in these expensive cards would be a shame if an SSD solution does come about. I do not trust a recording device that is at its peak 100% of the time just to work.

Unfortunately not...

But it would be amazing... if those cards could work in a DSLR, it would bring 4K raw to the 5D. (that is... if the CF slot and buffer could manage that amount of data :P)

Canon is also a supporter of the CFast 2.0 standard.

Looking into Canon's history it would be more likely that this will finally enable 4k RAW recording to the successor of C500 - probably featureless overpriced product with the same dull name: C550.

Canon knows what so called "power user" wants:

-full frame DSLR with 4k RAW video capabilities
-dual pixel AF with global shutter
-lanc for driving focus and iris (and zoom) on their stills AF lenses
-20 stops of latitude
-clean ISO 25600
-cool name
-etc...

But they are playing an old game which they learned from Swiss watch makers. Rule for that game is updated to make things harder, not only for (Chinese) copycats, but for end users them-self:

If you have stellar product then you can't make profit on cyclically updated crappy ones.

Canon has never been pushing the limits, they release new product only when there is enough potential customers or when they feel threatened.

It's real coincidence that ML RAW recording possibility has been 'discovered' only few days after BMCC with 4K and global shutter were being announced.

Sony has some nice initiatives, but they are not sign of "good will", more likely the result of fear after seeing financial predictions.

This is off topic, post something related to this thread and not, as maarek said, "conspiracy theories."
Speculation like this is in the cafe section.

There are several of use here monitoring updates on the ML front and continuously update this thread for our users here. Don't clutter it with nonsense.

Update about the SSD add-on: it's stalled, don't expect anything anytime soon. The thread over at the ML forum is basically dead. It seems that a relatively dumb adapter (mechanical CF-to-IDE, off-the-shelf IDE-to-SATA) doesn't work because the camera does some stuff that is either out of the spec, or that can't be done by this simple solution.
I'm holding to my NEX-5N, borrowing other cameras (usually BMC and 5D2) when needed, and spending my cash on other stuff while I try to improve my skill. But if I were to go for a 5D3, I'd get a single Transcend 128GB card. 25 minutes of RAW video, for anything that requires more than that just shoot in H.264 and call it a day.

Thanks for the update Samuel. That is a shame about the SSD approach. I guess $350 for the Transcend is not that bad considering the SSD setup would be around that as a retail product. I'd just prefer the SSD for reliability. How do you feel about the CF cards and recording? Solid? Pretty solid?

I wouldn't expect any more reliability issues from good CF cards (no komputerbay!) than from SSD drives. It's basically the same tech, plus the SSD+adapter solution has lots of extra logic that might actually make it more trouble-prone.
No hands-on experience with the 5D3+RAW, though (I've worked with the footage, but I don't have one).

I just shot a corporate video for a data center company. We shot everything in raw and I've really come to love how much you can push the footage around. Of course the amounts of data is staggering, but what the heck. Quality wins above all imo.

Resolve 10 has made the whole thing a lot more fun. Ok, we can't have real time editing, but it's a breeze syncing up sound and so on, plus I find it that much easier grading in that over Premiere or Final Cut.

For Magic Lantern Raw video to Cineform 4:2:2, 4:4:4 or Cineform Raw we already have the RAW2GPCF utility provided by Cineform themselves. The great thing about RAW2GPCF is that; it is free, goes directly from the ml.raw files straight off the memory card to various flavors of Cineform, creates no intermediate files, and it is fast as hell. This is by far the fastest way to go from ML raw to editing.

Thread about it here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5479.0

Can also be used with the RAWanizer batch processing utility, thread about that here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5557.0

Sure. One can also use dpx2cf command line utility.

However, I think none of these solutions provide automatic audio merge, as well as intuitive and convenient interface, of RAW 2 CF RAW.

Perhaps I should post an updated video, the interface has evolved for the better since the last one.
