This is a misleading thread title. It is not raw video, it is not CinemaDNG. What it is doing is capturing the live view buffer as a 14-bit DNG still. On the 5D3 the image is 2080x1456 but there is garbage at the top, bottom, and left side of the frame. Cropped to the actual image gives a 3:2 ratio at 1933x1288. Still, it is raw, it can be captured without a shutter actuation so it may be great for time lapse.

Example DNG 14-bit raw Live view silent capture still image processed in Adobe Camera Raw 7: http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/7403/acra.jpg

it just looks like the clipped shades were drawn back down below 100 IRE. there is no additional detail there...

Neumann Films is putting out more info on their Facebook. They say they're getting about 10 fps currently. Here is another example they posted, promising a video and sample downloads soon:

I'm not sure I understand the excitement here - it seems highly unlikely this will ever work as an actual method of shooting more than a few seconds of footage. ML are geniuses for the work they've done so far, but this feels more like a gimmick, IMO.

I knew Canon was holding out on us.

I doubt they were thinking about the desire for RAW video output from average consumers before their camera even became known for video, but I'd definitely agree they have more tricks we just don't know yet.

Toshiba just announced a 1066x CF card that does minimum sustained 65MB/s. If the ML lads can crop the image for anamorphic shooting and get the DNG file size down to 2.7Mb 24p might just be doable. It's the buffer size that could be a problem. You'd be able to record 16min on a $310 64Mb 1066x CF card. You would have to shoot with the anamorphic lens the other way around and the image would be really skinny so you'd need something like a Zacuto EVF to stretch the image.

So now that we can go HDMI out, wouldn't that eliminate the need for the buffer?

It's not going to work over the HDMI out. HDMI only records 8bit, the DNGs are 14bit RAW.

The ML site is down, maybe Canon sent in the Ninjas.
