Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

I think this is just fanciful thinking. I shot a musicvideo and as a test, embedded 4 shots show in raw in between the H264 shots. It's not that apparent which ones they are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsocmqinVpQ
Perhaps on Youtube that is the case, but if you need latitude and are going direct to a larger screen the difference becomes very apparent.
The other thing to bear in mind is that the differences become very profound when using good lenses.

Hey Maarek I thought your Video was really great!!! Even though I didn't have a clue what they were saying I knew what the video was about. Good job!!!! Did you shoot this on the mk3?

Here links to 5dmk3 RAW cinema DNG folder, and C100 Prores 422 converted file, in same conditions, on C100 Sigma 17 50 2.8 lens, on 5Dmk3 Canon 24mm 1.4 prime, shot at about F 5.6
both, iso 200, on mk3, 850 on C100, let me know what you think, after this test, I've decided to film on C100 as much as I could in 7day project on Mt. Athos, Greece.
I thought C100 resolves more, yet having wider dynamic range, overall grading better, if exposure is correct.

Would love to see these side by side in a comparison video on vimeo :)

alex1, the results can be different, depending on the workflow, that's reason I've posted source files, (prores for C100).

Thanks and yeah, on the 5dmarkIII. I also tested RAW-for a couple of select shots (boy running out of school-wide shot, biking in the tunnel, figured I would need the dynamic range. In the end, even the h264 was enough).

Sure you can grade raw footage to look like H264 but it can be impossible to achieve the same vice verse.

Have you ever tried grading different shots to match? There is nothing mysterious about it, I can grade h264 and RAW-material to look quite alike unless the h264 is shot badly. Or if it wants the "hdr"-look. There will be differences but in motion they are very difficult to spot.

There is always the next level of hyperbole. Yes, RAW is nice and someday we will all shoot with a compressed RAW-codec. But people tend to take it to the extremes, especially on the internet.

Hello Oleg
When are you coming to Greece about that 7day project on Mt. Athos? Will it be a documentary about the monasteries? It should be very interesting...

Just now I realized that you have already filmed the project!
Both cameras look great to me...if you have the C100 around I dont think the RAW workflow worth it...

C100 looks more old school in terms of grading than the raw does.... But we all know the gradability of raw. Would be nice to know the raw settings as they were converted into editor friendly format.

Perhaps slight exposure differences make the 5D look sharper. Though they are very similar to be sure. To my eyes the 5D looks better on an iPad and computer monitor.

It is very clear though that for narrative work the 5D is the preferred choice over the C100/300.

Is a separate wav file perfectly syncing to raw video now?

Apparently the ML devs have not made progress with audio, for now on the 5D2 they removed the option to record a wav file and just left the sync beep to help with external sound recorder sync.

Hopefully, this could change.

Yes I do it often. Recently it was hard to match s-log footage to purchased stock footage due to the increased latitude of the s-log footage vs normal video footage. Remember I wrote sometimes it can be near impossible and other times it works fine.

I didn't expect this, but the 5D3+RAW looks sharper. And the colors are great too... except in the highlights, those are too yellow and saturated for me; if that can be graded out, it's the clear winner.

I'm with you, Sam. 5d has the edge in sharpness and color, it seems.
