Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Theres the thing with the cards..... 1000x speed means something different depending on brand and size. You cant be sure that your 1000x card is fast enough. You should read the cad thread on the ML forum. Also.... Be sure to format the card in exFat on a computer rather than in camera.
The camera will format the card in fat32 which is an outdated format that has a max file size of 4gb

Hey Ted,

Thanks for getting back to me. I don't seem to be able to record past 1 minute on my lexar 32gb 1000x, do I have to flag something in the ML settings. I'm pretty sure I'm on the latest build.

Cheers,

check you canon menu auto power off settings. :) if your using a 32 gig card i suggest putting it at 8 min. Or just at OFF.

I assume he is using 5D2 his post started with " ...As you seem to the be the MKII guru..." in which case I don't think the 5D2 recognizes exfat.

I thought that the MK II couldn't read EXFAT it was only the MK III?

I'm at work and my battery is flat so have to wait a few hours to get home and get a new one! I'm really enjoying the raw and especially the 4:3 modes with the full frame it's awesome! What sucks is the aliasing, it's awful! Just don't know if I could justify a MK III purchase as I just a BMCC a few months ago!

then a VAF filter is a cheaper solution. :)

I'm very pleased with the results, the DNG's have a filmic quality to them, the same way as Canon's fullframe video DSLR's has always been in my opinion. Yet it's sharp and scales nicely 200% to 4K remaining detail.

The bad? Well... it's a slow workflow, needs a lot of CF cards, and it's "only" 12 stops. You have to decide for yourself if it's worth it. My take on it? It doesn't matter what I think... I'm not a pro, and I'm happy with h264 as long as there is a good story to tell.

Has someone tested, speedwise, the new KomputerBay 128GB x1050 CF cards vs the 64GB x1000 ?
If they are as fast as the 64GB or better, these appear to be a better buy, since you get more GB for the buck :p and in theory you can store about half an hour of raw footage on such card.

one guy on amazon wrote that it worked with the 5d, I tested the 1000x 128 GB and that one did not work.

My komputerbay 128gig 1050x udma 7arrived today, promptly tested it! And as expected IT DOES NOT WORK.

Cannot be formated by 2 cameras, 5d2 and 7d. cant be recognized by my PC as well.

I have a proven Lexar 1000x 32 gig for several weeks now and never failed me.

I wanted to try this out since there is one reviewer the in ML forum, same one on amazon that tried it.

So I filled out my return form and will conclude that this brand is not advisable for serious work and for those who do not wish to waste their time.

It's Russian roulette with those kompbay cards. I do some crazy things but trusting one of those cards is just insane.

Its weird that you guys have so many issues with them. I bought 4 64gb cards at different times and all work without problems knock on wood. Are you all pc users?

Also... Stop going for 128gb cards.... All I keep reading is that they are generally slower than 64gb cards, so why bother?

I made a gamble because this is the newer 1050X not the 1000x which was always reported to be bad. One poster at the ML forum posted a slightly higher benchmark for the 1050x than 1000x.
So as I said, it was a dice throw. :) And like in any form of gambling, the house always win. :)

I have tested the 64 gig version and it was ok.

I am talking with Komputerbay techsupport right now to isolate this problem. For now for those with UDMA7 1050x cards have a problem with older non UDMA7 card readers. If you have this hold on for my updates and DO NOT plug it into older cf card reader as it WILL CAUSE CORRUPTION ON THE CARD.

I'll update this post in a few hours as tech support will also be calling those who emailed and contacted them so we can isolate the problem.

Komputerbay sends me 1000x and 1050x 128gigs to test for compatibility on the mkII

One of the issues in using the new 1050x cf cards is using non UDMA7 card readers,

According to Chet at techsupport, non UDMA7 has the potential to corrupt the new 1050x cards. His advise to those who have purchased this fast cf cards is DO NOT INSERT THEM TO USB 2.0 CARD READERS.

UDMA7 card readers for USB 3.0 should be used as the new cards use a different voltage. The cards would protect itself and give you "card is write protected" message when an
incompatible card reader with a different chipset is used. This will prevent further damage to the CF card.

They are sending overnight 2 128gig CF cards which I will test for the mkII, one is a new 1000X from a new manufacturing batch which they said has no more issues as the early ones and
another 1050x CF which hopefully I can get to work with a compatible CF card reader.

I will update this when my tests will be done.

So far, one thing goes well for komputerbay for me, and that is a great and responsive technical support BASED IN THE U.S. that will resolve the issues you have with their product. Stay tuned.

Interesting Ted.

Was wondering two things:

1. If thees cards are out of spec Lexar cards is there a possibility they will fail at an uxexpected time due to them being out of spec?

2. To save the innevitable return process (if #1 turns out to be: no) would it be possible for Komputerbay to speed test cards and sell us ones to our spec needs? If they were willing to do that I'm sure there would be many here who would patronize their business.

Steve,

I don't think they will provide or even know the answer to #1.

For #2, they are fully aware the demand for their high speed high capacity cards is driven by the development of ML raw for the canons, so they are in contact with those who purchased from them for this purpose and have experienced problems.
If I remember correctly they have or have access to a 5D mkIII and have taken note of what works for that model, however, they don't have enough information and tests made on the 5D mkII
so I will perform some tests and I will be in contact with their tech support during some of the process, they sent the CF cards overnight and right now I'm also upgrading my system to handle USB 3.0 and udma7 cards.
I will inform them of the results so they can properly address the issues with the newer cards and the 5dmkII.

For now this is what I gathered from them.

1. there is a new production batch for the 1000x that they say has no more issues. That's being sent to me for testing.

2. The 5dmkIII will work with the fast cards 1000x and 1050x

3. Certain older USB 2.0 card readers like those with the chipset, ALCOR AU64771GL-1 can corrupt the high capacity/high speed udma7 cards making them lock so they won't be permanently damaged, when this happens,
it will have to be sent back to them to sort of "reset the circuit breaker" , you'll know this has happened when you can no longer format the cards and windows will read that its capacity is only 3.XX MB, thats the size of the chip that controls the circuitry to protect the card.

I will update this information more tomorrow after my tests.
