Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

It's not an issue for me but for the pixel peepers it's an epic saga. NeatVideo is slooow and more destructive.

NeatVideo! You can denoise in ACR or the full version of Resolve.

Full version of R9 would require two or three NR nodes and tracking to get rid of it.

NeatVideo, maybe two passes with different settings.

It's mainly an issue because you have to underexpose the camera very far to fit highs into the range. If you're okay with FPN or a more intense denoise process, then it's not a big deal. The other option is calling it what it is, buy the right diffusion, and let highs go that aren't related to skin.

You certainly can't do anything about it in a lowlight situation with a lot of lights in the shot. Shop lights, headlights, street lamps etc. This is one area you see the differences in DR between 5D3-RAW and cams like Alexer or F35. The two high-end cameras would easily see into the shops without losing detail (which always looks more cinematic/film-like) while the 5D's going to lose most of it.

If the noise floor were a bit lower you could eck more out of it. It's not bad as is, by any means, though.

ACR does a good job of getting rid of the FPN without softening the image too much or the extra rendering time. Personally I think you'd be mad to denoise any other way, but hey what do I know?

With 12 stops you gotta let the highlights go. If people are looking at the highlights you've got bigger problems to worry about.

More so, with twelve balanced as it is on the 5D3 you're going to have to make a tough choice.

12 on an F35 is a different story.

so squig, are you saying it would bennefit me to do any noise reduction in light room raw vrs. other NR software for best quality, if so can you elaborate thanks.

Sorry if this has been answered already, but the search won't accept HDR (too short). Can you shoot a raw video and then make two copies, set the exposure for each differently and then composite the two videos to get HDR video?

+1 for noise reduction in ACR and (if needed) high pass sharpening in PS, vs any video plugin.

Yeah it's the best option, better to do as many corrections as possible to the raw file before it's compressed. Unfortunately there's an issue with making luma corrections in ACR that causes exposure shifts so you have to stick to NR and colour correcting and fix exposure and highlights elsewhere for now.

Not sure if this has been covered but is it possible with yet with ML & RAW on 5dmk3 to shoot 50p? I have a Komputerbay 64gb x1000 card and can shoot 1920x1080 no problem and I see there are options to change the fps in the RAW menu. Obviously the card isn't gonna cope with 1920x1080 @ 50fps but has anyone managed to record slow motion in a crop mode at a lower resolution? Or will this be achievable in the future with newer builds and fast CF cards?

Can the 5diii be set up thru this hack to be a RAW 720p cam up to 60p? 720p all across? does lowering res increase reliability? if so then I'd totally pay for a full-frame, RAW/RGB whatever exactly it is, 720p 0-60fps fully manual lens-changeable thingy. camera.

had to ask, it's a ton to read, reading thru it and thru the code (which i don't understand) and trying to understand how this is working... res is the least important thing in my book these days, where i'm living.

[h=5][/h]squig,
thanks again for your efforts to push further developments. So I understand that Raw to cinema DNG does not really work? What is the current build, that is reliable? I am still on June 2nd. Does it makes sense to keep current on builds?

I'm still on June 2nd. I haven't had time to do much testing with the newer builds but it sound like the the builds from the last couple of days are working well. Raw to CinemaDNG is a work in progress.

720p 60p is working fine for me with a Lexar 1000x and Toshiba 1066x card. There's a bit more aliasing in 720p mode.

So Squig,
What exactly is your process then?
You are doing:
ACR>raw2dng>AE>Resolve?

Even though I understand that you are getting a better final output in terms of resolution, debayering etc from ACR and AE, generally from my experience it is important to change the exposure/contrast before color correcting, because that has a huge effect on the colors. So doing it the other way around would be difficult from a professional grading point of view.

raw2dng - ACR/AE - prores4444 - FCPX/magic bullet/film convert.

I still don't have a workflow I'm happy with, but I'm hoping in a few months when the new Mac Pro comes online I'll be able to cut and grade DNGs in FCPX or Resolve 10.

We need somebody to build an ACR type realtime debayering plugin for FCPX or Resolve with all the ACR tools.

thanks for shariing your workflow.
Do you set the ACR values like contrast and saturation all the way down to get the maximum amount of info for grading later or play with them directly?
I am a little fearful doing the latter on a non grading monitor, but if I had some scopes other than histograms I could imagine doing that part of the process then.
I think any ACR application would definitely need scopes and even better if it could somehow access an SDI out to video monitor as well, but I suppose that is probably asking too much and not realistic....

5D mkII out of pre-alpha stage, now has Alpha 1

5D mkII out of pre-alpha stage, now has Alpha 1

5DmkII, it is out of pre-alpha and now has ALPHA 1.
For those who are following the nightly builds, the June 12 compile by developer a.d. is the module version of ALPHA 1.

Alpha 1 is for those who are starting from scratch.

There is now jun 13 NB (able to save your settings implemented )
https://bitbucket.org/a_d_/magic-lan...3385aa13bd.zip

here are SOME of the 5D raw resolutions, aspect ratio and its status. (using a 1000x Lexar CF card)

1880x1058 -- 16:9 -- 400 frames approx.

1880x940 -- 2:1 -- 1,900-2,400 frames approx.

1880x854 -- 2.20:1 -- stable/continuous til card full

1728x972 -- 16:9 -- 10,000 frames approx. ( 7min ) This is already near 32gig card capacity.

1728x864 -- 2:1 -- stable/continuous til card full

In 3x (5X magnify) crop mode ( note for now NB jun 12, centering and cropping in this mode is off a bit to the left)
crop mode will give optimum results when used with FPS over ride (23.976)

2152x1078 -- 2:1 -- 184 frames approx.

2048x1078 -- 1.90:1 -- 242 frames approx.

1920x1078 -- 16:9 -- 335 frames

1880x1058 --16:9 -- 430 frames approx.

1880x854 -- 2.20:1 -- stable/continuous

1728x972 -- 16:9 -- stable/continuous

There are more resolution and aspect ratio combinations.

For now the raw video in the 5D2 records beyond the 4gig limit by spanning several files.

Programmers have written several programs to extract the dngs, combine the spanned files and convert them to files understood by most systems.

Post processing:

Aside from DNGs you also can convert them to Cinema DNGs to make them compatible with Resolve.

RAWanizer by developer Marten has a windows interface to batch process your raw files to DNGs, Tiffs or proxy files in Prores, MP4, DNxHD, Csupport for Cineform.

Raw to Cinema DNG converter by developer Chmee for windows. I've tested this and the footage will open in both AE CS5 and Resolve.

RAWMagic by developer Thomas Worth converts raw to Cinema DNG works for Mac.

So, is this ready for use in production? I'd say test it first and see if it works for you. If you already have a raw workflow and raw capable A camera, a BMC, red etc, I'd say you can use this as B cam for now.
Again, test it first if it works for you, remember, you need a fast CF card to get the optimum, stable and continuous recording (ex.lexar 1000x) If you're a DSLR shooter and want to use this in your project, test it and with a sound recorder, you might and could be succesfull in using this tool as it is now.
