Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Any shorts or commercials or anything besides test videos that were shot with the RAW hack?

Is it usable for projects yet?

I shot a narrative scene last week, I'm cutting it now. Totally useable if you know what you're doing.

Yes, but how do you get the actual write speed of the card (MB/s)?
Need to see where my card tops out at actually, not theoretically.
What kind of material do I need to test/shoot (something highly detailed, running water or the opposite for instance?) and what app is the write speed best read in?

Detail and movement don't make any difference, it's not compressed. Turn every Canon menu option off (the cheat is to choose a custom setting). Set the pic size to small jpeg or small raw, that frees up some ram for ML. Try setting stills to multi burst mode vs single shot. Run the ML benchmark test and compare your Kbay speed to others posted on the ML forum. The kbay speeds are all over the place unlike other cards which are pretty stable. If the speed is lower than other tested kbay cards send it back.

Ran the test. Komputerbay 64GB card was performing extremely well. 97.5/127 Read Write at 16384K, without turning anything off in the camera.
Until the card died 20 minutes later.

Oh well, back to the vendor. Time for another one.

The card "died" 20 minutes later? meaning it won't boot anymore? Or it won't record? is that 20 minutes while recording? I asked since you said 20 minutes later, and I figured the 64 gig will only hold around 18ish minutes of footage since 1 minute is around a gig.

Also, if your cam shut down after 20 minutes maybe its the auto shut off time setting in canon menu? I read in ML forum raw recording still makes the camera think that its idle and counts down till the time set for auto shutdown.

Or is it really your card thats faulty?

Meaning that the camera cannot format or access the card and sends the message "change card". Further, it cannot be accessed on a computer, except by disk utility, which sends a "failed" message after erase is attempted.

ML Benchmark can see it, but it is now apparently writing at 6.9MB/s.

Like I said, oh well, it was great while it lasted.

Hehe. Having to reshoot a scene would end up costing me a lot more than the money saved on a few kompbay cards. Bite the bullet and get a Toshiba or a Lexar, both do 94-96MB/s consistently.

The exact thing happened to me. I've sent it back and will probably get a replacement card.

Agreed.

Can you get full HD (1920x1080) for long recording times without dropped frames with these cards?

Oh, and what's the current state of sound in the latest builds?

I'm getting full HD on my Komputer Bay 32gb and my Sandisk 32gbs with the latest build. Also, banding is greatly improved and Rawmagic is working nice (although still getting pick specs when process though resolve). Man, only 4 weeks later and they have come a long way. Let them iron out the remaining kinks and I will be saying Blackmagic what????

Thanks for the update.

I guess Red was right all this time. Resolution is king (and raw video is queen.). All of those supposed modern HD cameras cant even touch the resolution of the 50d vids I've seen.

Am thinking of pulling the trigger on a 5dmk3. Have to say those Komputerbay cards have me worried though.

Nope. For anything serious I would shoot at the very least with my F3, SLOG and a recorder.
The cost of my media is one fifth the price you are paying, is tried and true and super reliable.
The quality of the image is at least on par, and in my humble opinion probably better than the 5DMIII with raw, as I believe it still has more dynamic range.

Further, I know that you are trying to insure reliablility, but if the cost of my entire production was seriously impacted because I had a CF card fail during a take (and let's face it they aren't all likely to fail at the same time if that happens), then I would seriously have to stop and ask some questions, because there is something wrong. The first being where was my 1st AC and DIT that no one noticed this and that we continued to roll with a faulty card for instance?

Lastly, paying the equivalent price of an external recorder (for example) for two 64GB cards doesn't make sense for me.
I am more than willing to spend 200 euros and do some returns if need be, for a B-Cam on less serious projects, but not 650 Euros.
In order for this RAW thing to really be a revolution and more than an exciting new twist, the price of that media is going to have to come down. And it will, but not just yet.

Then buy the lexars.
The ml mk3 is detailed, but I can still out do the detail with my c100. I'm pretty happy these days to have both cameras as they cover all the bases I need to shoot.

This is weird, but the Lexar 128gb, it was having issues when I first started using it with the 5D3. Dropping frames, and some footage got lost but the card never borked.

What doesn't make sense to me's after I went and basically filled the card up, reformat, repeat, it's getting continuous rolls with global draw on or off. That sort of worries me, though, because you shouldn't have to "stripe" solid state media before you drop anything onto it?

Right now, though, it's working pretty flawlessly.

We still need to meet up, was sick so couldn't first friday this week (kind of just now recovering even) but I've got the 5D3 whenever and of course my Blackmagic(s) so you can check them both out and maybe take some footage home to mess with.

Hack's coming into its own, a lot faster than one would've thought, and it's a different kinda look for sure. Can't say that I don't dig the 2.35:1 in camera combined with the 135 format.

Not that I don't believe you but that's just hard to believe having worked with and knowing the nature of AVC HD

Would love to see a scientific test of charts comparing the two.

Uhhh, the sensor and the lens drive the resolution. I can post sharpen the MK3 to match my settings of detail in the C100 or vice-versa and lower the sharpen settings in the C100. But hey, I see what I see.

I've never had a dropped frame filling the whole card. There's been the occasional hiccup right at the start of the first recording with a few of the builds.

Internal sound sync is still not happening, external is all good.

The Lexar 1000x, Toshiba 1066x, and Hoodman 1000x are all good for sustained 1080p 24/25p. It's a lottery for write speed with the Kompbay and I've heard of a number of failures.

A few guys (Samuel is one of them) are working on an SSD recording option which will be substantially cheaper and possibly faster. If you've got a data wrangler you can offload a 64Gb card to a macbook with an expresscard CF reader in about 6min so you could get by with 2 cards. I've got 3 64Gb cards and if the SSD option doesn't happen I'll get another 3 cards so I don't have to offload footage until the end of the day.
