Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

I'm pretty excited about this because I own the camera. If I didn't already own the camera I would probably just buy the BMCC PocketRaw.

Well, for $1k, it's a no brainer to pick one up anyway. The tiny form factor is marvelous, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the compressed RAW workflow plays out.

say what you will but this test shows RED 4k v 5Draw. The 5d holds it's own. When ML takes care of the cadence and makes this hack stable, it is pretty darn impressive!

Careful dusty, the red disciples will crucify you for such blasphemy. I haven't had any cadence issues, some people are just messing things up in post.

Yes, absolutely does hold it's own.
However, it's a bit like lenses. Cinema lenses aren't necessarily better than stills ones optically.
However, it is all about solidity, ease of use and repeatability under the stresses of serious productions.
The latter are the real questions which will make or break 5D raw as a successful professional tool.
If ML can stabilize all of this we really are in business.

I thought that video is from an older version of the hack and that the newer version doesn't have the same issues?

The camera has been stable for me, it's the post processing that's been a problem but it's getting there.

Time will tell won't it. I'm looking at this video in terms of fidelity. Image. I'm pretty confident judging by ML's past work that cadence and reliability will be worked out. And when it is........

A1ex added to the changelog 12 hours ago-
raw_rec: got rid of copy task, fixes motion judder. Perfect sync, finally!

Just went head to head with my C100. Nothing scientific. But....Get this hack running smooth and stable and the detail is right there with the C100. ANd with out shooting charts I would say the DR is as well if not a smidgen better. I'm way impressed! Just need the faster card which I have ordered.

I've also had the BMCC V1. I'd rather use this ML 5D than the BMC. The image is just cleaner. So, give us stability, sound for scratch, and a better workflow and I think we have a winner.

Exciting isn't it! Thank you for running this test.

People have been complaining about cadence issues. I don't know if they are really just 24p strobing but... any sign?

My card is not fast enough. I see motion issues with my Sandisk 90 MB card. It's not really a cadence thing but seems to be a buffer thing, like it chokes out. I ordered a faster card though. Getting ready to upload a 5DRaw v C100 non scientific test to my dropbox and will post when done (I have to run out for a spell though).

I'm pretty positive that the ML team will come through on this. They always have...

dustylens, thanks for running a test, look forward to it, some tests show jagged edges, aliasing, could be vimeo compression..
shooting a chart would be ultimate.. something tells me the resolution is not quite on par with C100.. Hope we see soon! Shooting 1920x 720 is a possibiity on a slower card, which still show resolution.

Yes, I'm shoot 1920x720 now but the card still chokes here and there. I do see very slight jaggies and the C100 is in fact a bit better but the jaggies are on upper highlights (like most digital cameras would do). It's very close. Working on some more images then I'll do a dropbox.

Squig mentioned its in the "Change logs." But the Build itself is not yet posted.

Yeah there's normally a bit of a lag before someone posts a build, I'll post it here when I see it.

Yeah dusty I think there's a bit more DR because you can recover more in the highlights with RAW. I wouldn't be surprised if it has more than 920 lines of resolution, it's looking sharp up against the RED! That magic hour test I did with the Leica is jaw dropping.

If I get the new build today I'll shoot the kids riding their bikes.

dustylense, holding my breath, waiting for the results, like many of DVX readers.. to me 5dmk3 for sure makes sense if the result is close to C100, for greenscreen shooting, for sure... still do not see day to day usage of Raw workflow, for documentaries, corporate, the workflow seem to be unreasonable in terms of time/result.

The shots I'm gonna post aren't that exciting. Trust me. Just crap in my back yard. But it is the C100 V Mk3Raw with a blind loop. Hopefully over the weekend I can do a more side by side test between the two cameras. Exporting now, then upload, then I'll post to dropbox.
