Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Now if only they could get this to work on the D800 (yes I know magic lantern is canon only but I can dream right?) because doesn't the d800 have like 14 stops of dynamic range compared to the 5D Mk III 12 stops? If so that would be awesome. Still can't believe the ML Team got this working its crazy. Sadly switched over to nikon recently so this wont effect me :\

Those figures have been revisited and it was found that a lot depends on the lenses being used. When the Canon tests were reshot with a higher resolving lens, there was found to actually be almost as much DR as the D800.

Destroys the D800 for resolution and recoverable dynamic range, there's no comparison, it's RAW!

BUT the D800 is still a very capable camera.

could you shoot a newspaper something with detail, with GH3, which I think you have! From other tests GH3 seem to resolve more. Do not talk about possible recovery, now ( smith Rock video did look pretty soft as was mentioned here)

The only thing the ML Raw hack is doing is skipping the NR processing, this will recover detail, but on the flip side, make the image noisier. The sensor is still line-skipping and the detail is still not even close to what my C100 does.

I for one am looking forward to the first C100/300 vs 5d3 raw detail shootout. I have a feeling it will rival the specialty cameras, and will obviously go to town on them re latitude.

Not even a contest. The DR will be similar, but the resolved detail is nowhere close. With a Ninja-2 shooting to ProRes 422 HQ (on cheaper/faster SSDs), it has more than enough color info and bitrate to handle everything that people are throwing at the MK3 Raw files at the moment. Plus, the C100 is far more pleasurable to actually use than a 5D3 could ever aspire to (XLR in, NDs, articulating LCD, ect.)

Since I own a C100+Ninja-2, I've been working solely with that footage for nearly a half-year already. What I'm seeing coming from the MK3 Raw examples (granted, almost all nature videography so far with no lighting setups) is only impressive for the MK3, not against the C100.

I really look forward to C100 vs 14 bit 5dmk3 epic shootout, from what I've seen I'd rather underwhelmed by all the hype around new ML development.

In fact, the biggest thing ML-RAW is doing is that it allows you to run the debayering in your computer, instead of using the system that the camera can run at 24 fps. That's where the softness comes from in the 5D3, and using ACR instead is a HUGE advantage.
In terms of NR, I think we're just getting new options: instead of living with whatever the camera decides to do, you can now play with the ACR sliders until you find some settings that fit the particular shot you're working with.

Uhhh C100? Gar gar, you've obviously never worked with raw.

You can't judge based off YouTubers posting cat videos on their hacked 5D3. Just wait my friend, and you shall see.

That's really heavily crushed, Squig. Were you going for that?

Yeah. The sun was low and really harsh so I just ran with it, couldn't wait for magic hour. I've been putting this thing through hell and it's taking everything I can throw at it. There's no turning back now. I just gotta get some sLUTs sorted.

Has anyone tried 5D3's new firmware with ninja2? I am wondering if it's possible to record internally as well as through hdmi on ninja2.
When 5D3 firmware 1.2.1 is supported by ML, it would be nice to record prores proxy to ninja2 and to record 14bit raw internally. I may be wishing too much.

It's all fun and great news that ML has hacked the MK3 for RAW. We'll see how it develops.

BUT... RAW RAW RAW! Take Squigs example two posts up. Tell me Squig, the workflow for that clip, was it worth it? nothing against the clip, but I agree with Kholi in that it's super crushed and that was most likely your choice. But was the workflow worth it for the final product? Now start imagining a production? Make it an easy corporate shoot if you will. Is the workflow worth it?

It's nice to have the option for RAW out of the Mk3 for maybe a difficult shot here and there. But in Squigs example if someone had been standing next to you with a C100/300 and shot the same stuff while you shot the RAWmk3, I think the person shooting the C100/300 would have shot, edited, exported, and posted online the clip before you even got to the edit bay. And the image would have looked equal if not much better but would have far more resolution to say the least.

Again, not trying to crap on your parade Squig or single you out (just using that clip and subject as example).

See, the BMC has the advantage here with RAW shooting in terms of workflow. Put the RAWs in Resolve, export proxies, edit and create XML back to Resolve, grade and import back to NLE then export. For some things even that is not worth the workflow and the storage requirements.

It's great what ML has done and that is without a doubt. But unless you can externally record to a ninja or something for clients to review clips on set, using the MK3Raw will just be a novelty for now. Has anybody even tried testing recording out to external for this very purpose? Because until then, if you have a client on set using the MK3Raw will just be an issue for that very reason. Let's see how this develops. So far the only thing I've seen that is impressive is McGregors Timple. It looks real nice. But again, I think even the lowly 420 capture of the C100 could have done the same but with better resolution.

Honestly, most everything I've seen shot MK3Raw is interesting. But it's nothing that even the C100 couldn't do in terms of image. And yes, I have shot RAW. I had the BMC. I've been shooting RAW images since RAW was a format on still cameras and even before that with large format view camera backs.

ML 5d Raw is cool. I'd rather see a nice 10bit 422 Mpeg though. If you want RAW and RAW with an established workflow, buy a Scarlet or the BMC4K for anything that pays or is serious work for the check. Rent it if you have to. I guess it all boils down to how far ML takes this hack. Make it issue free and secure with the ability to record externally and it can be a valuable tool. But as it stands now, it's just a novelty or a specialty shot camera working with RAW.

EDIT: It seems playback in camera is now working sort of. As well as sound recording. That's two birds knocked down. Again, lets see what happens....
