Magic Lantern count down for 7D

Right. The lesson learned for all of us would be that this is a very expensive proposition and need to decide if this is all worth it. Me personally...i would pass in that scenario. $1,700 is a lot of money,.

I was asking from a customer's perspective, not Tramm's.
Enthusiasts of all kinds of equipment (not just cameras) frequently do warranty-voiding mods to improve the functionality of their gear. (Off the top of my head, there's the computer overclocking community...) As long as the risks are made known, then the people who truly want or need to do it will still do it.

Would it affect your attitude toward Canon that they didn't provide Tramm the code he needed to implement Magic Latern without voiding the warranty? Hypothetical musings of course...

Nah... I also wouldn't expect them to. If it was them who gave him the cam that would be enough to show me their intentions. They are probably routing for him as we speak.

Computer parts manufacturers regularly send review samples to computer enthusiast sites, who perform warranty-voiding overclocking as part of their standard battery of tests. The companies don't care, and neither do the consumers, as long as everyone is clear about who bears responsibility when something goes wrong.

Any ideas as to why Canon would not purchase Magic Lantern and bestow not only fame and fortune on Tramm but also easy access to the code and schemantics he might need to implement the needed features in an official firmware update that not only did not void warranties but actually made cameras more valuable to their customers?

Why purchase Magic Lantern? Canon's engineers are just as capable of adding these functions as they have been disabling/limiting them. Canon seems to have a conservative business practice, they would not pay a western programmer for features they can implement on the front end in Japan. We can only speculate as to why certain features are not here...but we know for a fact it isn't because Canon's engineers cannot work past them.

IF it was Canon USA that gave Tramm the camera, it is because they know the potential of their US/European sales when Tramm succeeds.

Exactly... And they don't have to pay anybody (such as their engineers or programmers) to "test the waters."

Its entirely possible that Canon will release a 7D with the updates called the 7Dmk2 at NAB and start another feeding frenzy.

It's also perfectly possible they'll have a FF with 24p by then too.

There's no way Canon would want you to pay $25 for magic lantern instead.

As well as providing new utilities for the 7D, this donated camera might help Hudson find out how to give the 5DII 24/25 fps...

Yikes, the cameras just never stop coming out! Scary.

I'm happy with the 7D 1.6x crop factor. Full frame might be nice but it's not as accurate as the 7D to 35mm film.

has anyone heard anything about magic lantern for the 7d since the new firmware release? I can't wait to get rid of the AGC!!

Well, you asked about the 7D in particular... I have a comparable love/hate relationship with the GH1, and I think the GH1 makes me madder because it's so close to being ideal at its price point, if it wasn't for the codec issue that occasionally pukes...

But at the price point, they're forgivable. :)

You're ahead of me on this, but that was my thought. Ramp the data rate up to 24, so the codec can do it's job.

The problem with Panny, is they have a lot to protect. Canon OTOH, should stuff that 5D sensor in an H2, because they have nothing to lose...

They probably have to consider the multi-million dollar business they do in supplying broadcast, industrial and pro lenses to Sony and Panasonic. If these multi-nationals become unhappy about Canon's foray into their primary market-share, they could always look to Fujinon for exclusive deals.

Strangely enough, that is exactly what I said to some people at a local 5D meeting recently...
