Marshall monitor overkill for dvx100a [SD]?

The Marshall advertisement reads:
Key Features
• Image Conversion
The V-R70P-HDA as the ability to accept analog video signals, even very high quality 3-BNC HD/SD Component Video. Analog signals are digitized using an advanced 10-bit process with 4x over-sampling and adaptive 5-line comb filter. Video is scaled to fit on screen in the highest resolution using a state of the art LSI that incorporates 4 x 4 pixel interpolation with precision Gamma correction to product the best images available.

So I’ve been playing with my new 35mm adapter, and I may not be happy with my 7” Lilliput monitor. I own the DVX100a, which is an SD camera, and I’m not sure if the Marshall is just not overkill for my little output? My Lilliput may be twice as good as my on-board monitor, but my eyes aren’t what they use to be! I’m relegated to using the s-video connection but I see the Marshall has this option.
With these 35mm adapters, as you all know, exacting focus is crucial to a decent final image, so I’m wondering is it time to upgrade my monitor now, or is the Marshall beneficial to the HD crowd only?

Well only you can answer that question. For me coming from my Vari TFT-7 to HDV using my Marshall was a no brainer. But then again you are looking at a big investment. There are others who will claim that the IKAN v8000 is good enough for half the cost as as well as the Swift. It just comes down to your needs and your pocketbook. I myself still use the Varizoom for my DVX100A and the Marshall for the Canon A1. with my adaptor.

So you never slapped the Marshall on the DVX? I've decided money cant be the issue any longer if my monitor is frustrating me to no ends. So I see it as either the Marshall or the 10" Lilliput lcd. In another year or two I may be willing to move to HD, but now Im squeezing everydrop of goodness out of my DVX.

It sounds like you've answered your own question. Proper monitoring is clutch, especially with 35 adaptors and the multiple lens elements. The Marshall sounds like a necessary buy.

No I decided that since the Pany is SD I will dedicate the TFT for that camera and the Marshall for the Canon. But looking at the resolution between the two it is apples and oranges. But if you are going to use an adapter...the highest resolution is a must..especially when focusing in on your subject.

Yes, proper lightweight monitoring is my biggest need right now, my worry is s-video SD signal from the DVX will not improve on the Marshall vs. my Lilliput/ or Varizoom or similiar lcd.

Have you tried using the composite cables vs the s-video to see it there is a difference? I use composite cables on the pany and the vari and they seem fine and alot better that the LCD display on the camera.

yes my rca outs on the DVX run my Lilliput, ands its quite sharp, much better than my camera's lcd. But Im seeing I need more with the adapter.

What f-stops are you shooting on the adapter lens? You may have to stop it down..I find on my Nikons that f4-F5.6 is the sharpest sweet spots. You just got to light a lot to compensate for the the lens adjustment. In addition having your monitor calibrated properly will help also.

yep, Indoors Im using my Arri's for light, and outdoors its been under full sun, and Im stopping down to f4-5.6. And my final output is proof Im getting a good image...buts its a struggle during the shoot. I fear when shooting with others their impatience with me when I'm yelling "wait, your not in focus!"
I need to be faster and more accurate as all "whatever"

Well I find it hard to try to focus without using my follow focus..because of the need to remember which way to turn the focus ring on the lens. In addition having pre stops on the focus ring really cuts down time.

Im thinking SD=SD and no way to improve upon it without the monitor uprezzing the image, and Im wondering if the Marshall somehow does this? If not, then Im thinking I need a bigger Lilliput than the 7" I have now. The Lilliput I have is 800 x 480 resolution 1,200.000 pixel, Model 619GL-70/NP/C non touchscreen, $200.00

Well the marshall is the same as your lilliput. Maybe the dot pitch is smaller but it is just the signal and the nature of the beast as being SD. And since SD is 720x480 and not 1440x1080 for HDV or 1920x1080 for HD it is what it is. Also the marshall is not truly HD either. But the resolution is very clear. You could do the uprez method of using photozoom pro...but there is smettli who I believe he shoots in pal at regular speed then in post converts into 25p then goes from there. I'm tempting to see the difference in shooting 60i with the adapter then in post turn to 24p timeline and rendering and see the difference myself whenever i get the chance. He is using the SGpro r2 and the DVX. You might have to up your detail settings to see a crisper picture.

Yep, I up'd the detail level to +5 so far. So smithy, what do you think? The Marshall or a bigger Lilliput? Lilliputs are super cheap relatively speaking. Is SD worth this investment or am I wasting my time and energy with this Marshall idea? If there is no improvement with the SD signal then why bother?

Thanks smithy... I really didnt know If the sharper lcd [Marshall] could help with a sharper image created by the 35mm lenses. Seems SD is the crippling link in the chain. I get sold, so easily, by the marketing on many of these products!
