Magic Lantern count down for 7D

Good News! I went on magic lantern website to see if Trammell Hudson had a 7D to start his magic and he did receive one from an anonymous contributor. He's currently reverse engineering the OS of the 7D. It made my day!

OK, AGC gets disabled but you still can't monitor your audio at the record head. Do you just rely on the VUs in the LCD? Has anyone gotten burned doing it this way on the 5D?

That's soo good. The magic lantern also had audio levels and zebra, as well as aspect ratio masking if I remember correctly. This could be amazing..

And yeah, not being able to monitor the audio through headphones is a bit of a pain. I think recording through a 3rd party audio recorder will still probably be the best way.

If you install Magic Lantern can it be removed again simply be installing the original Canon firmware? Or are you stuck with it?

The firmware boots off of a CF card on a per-boot basis. Don't stick the CF card in the slot and it will boot as normal.

With the 7D that could change...

Me, too. Through trial and error, I've determined the 7D's product ID (0x80000250) and can get it to try to load a firmware image, but the loader is doing some additional checks on the firmware file and is rejecting my dumping tools. Perhaps they have made a minor change in the file format or there is a field in the header that I am not setting correctly (and that is ignored by the 5D).

So now I am considering other avenues to get a firmware dump. The USB port is one such approach; I've been doing quite a bit of analysis on it (and can add new commands to the PTP interface on the 5D). There is a way to send a new firmware image over the USB port and that may be a way to get a read of raw memory.

If Canon sent him the camera, why not help him out with the code?

That would require collaboration from a huge, Japanese-owned company. In other words, a political clusterf---. And it would require actual $$ in development from Canon. The list is long for reasons why that wouldn't work.

IF it was Canon, that's an awesome token! If it wasn't, it's an even more awesome move.

P.S. Maybe it was Barry :)

I volunteered to send mine to him, but mine hasn't arrived yet; supposedly it'll arrive tomorrow.

If I was Canon USA, you can bet dimes to doughnuts that I'd have a model in Tramm Hudson's hands at the first possible opportunity. And having worked with Japanese companies over the years, I'd say Taylor's observations are very much spot-on; there's a world of difference between a product manager saying "hey, let's ship this guy a unit for review/prototyping" and getting cooperation with the Japanese development team.

Barry has a good point. If Canon can get a feature into the 7D (the audio gain control) that will help sell it and not have to put any research into it (Tramm), then I think they definitely would do so.

Canon is indeed a likely candidate. Giving him all the information would open up a can of intellectual property worms, but giving him the hardware and looking the other way while he reverse-engineers it costs nothing more than the wholesale value of the camera, maybe a few hundred bucks.

What if the only way Tramm can figure out (through reverse-engineering) to get Magic Lantern into the 7D is to cannibalize the 7D's firmware and void every warranty?

Then at that point he would still have lost nothing since he got the cam for free. And we all would have learned a very valuable lesson.
