FEATURE: Magic - A Matt Sconce Film

Snaz, the grapevine has never met us... Worried? Nope. So far this has been a non issue for us as we are working with Kerner Group and their track record, which is award winning and extensive. Kerner's faith in our abilities has been enough.

--------------FLASH!

I just heard the first of the score from composer James Mierkey...

Oh my Goodness!!!

Just the part for the one minute teaser trailer is amazing! I teared up with its huge, overwhelming brilliance.

GREAT JOB JAMES!!!

We truly have 'John Williams' before anyone knows he is, well, John Williams. Magnificent!

Next:

We will be doing one more pick up shot for the trailer and then we will complete it.

Keep it going, guys! Would love to see your teaser when it's all said n'done!

You could sit around and what-if, how-do-I, he-said-she-said all day... but DOING is the real deal and that's exactly what you are. Get 'er done.

We will be filming the final VFX shot of the MAGIC teaser this Thursday on the sound stage of Criminal Minds in LA. Blare Media is bringing their RedOne camera and LionVFX (The Dollhouse, Criminal Minds) is handling the shot. Our sound design is almost done as well. The teaser will be unveiled soon!

Matt, you guys are killin' me! Criminal Minds soundstage?? REDone? LionVFX?? You and Gary are living the dream! Can't wait for the teaser.

You guys are an inspiration - loved following the story of Stricken.

But if I could weigh in with one cautionary note - I think you might want to be careful about casting before you have funding in place. I know you believe in all of the actors you've cast so far, but if you're really going to make a ten million dollar movie, your partners are going to want names in these roles that will help them sell the movie. I know you've set aside four slots for a-list actors, but you've cast the lead girl already, which is a huge role. Even the smaller roles you've handed out can get names that could be meaningful.

And beyond funding, when actors and their reps hear that you've cast someone with no experience as the lead girl, it's going to raise some red flags.

But all of that aside, best of luck. You guys are amazing.

I think Wiley makes a good point on the early casting but I understand why you'd want to go back to the actors who've helped you in the past. I certainly empathize but if the budget is to be so high, you definitely need to be sure there's plenty of room for household names and foreign eye candy names too.

They are not always the same, which is what (well, it's certainly one of the reasons) is pretty tricky about stepping into those higher budget levels.

That said, definitely looking forward to seeing the teaser.

I totally see what you guys are saying. HannaH has done a lot of things already. Not all of them are on the Imdb. She is definitely not inexperienced. She is not a name but she is only 9. She will need to be surrounded by some great names. We have many more roles than Four for name talent. The four are just the big lead/supporting roles with the most facetime and lines.. Counting of the top of my head, we have about 7-10 roles we could have names in with more rooms for cameos as well. I think we will be okay. When the talent sees what HannaH can do, they will be excited to work with her and debut her to the world. It is definitely a risk and I agree we should not cast too many roles in advance but I think we should be okay with our decisions. It just feels like we are doing the right thing. Time will tell. Thanks guys for following the thread! Hopefully big things happen with the movie soon!

Matt and the MAGIC crew got back from the Criminal Minds set where they shot a pick up shot. We used HannaH Eisenmann, our lead character (Rachel Ward) and SAG actor Jake Newton (Catch me if you Can) jakenewton.com for the shots.

The shoot was very successful and the shots were spectacularly shot on RED. I am still amazed at the dynamic range of that camera. We lit with seven Shocklights transported down to set by Shane Foster. Matt got to shoot with the Crim Minds dual ride-a-long camera dolly. I bet that was fun. The Lion VFX guys liked Matt's directing style and were very positive about the film project.

LionVFX (Zombieland, Doll House, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will be adding some nifty effects to the shot. We hope to have all VFX done and have the entire trailer finished in the next two weeks.

Tomorrow Matt and I travel down to Area 9 Productions for a work session finalizing the shooting script, set plans, locations, etc... Then it is on to finishing the MAGIC 3D budget estimates for the investors.

This is never expressed or promised in our actual business plan. It is just my thoughts and dreams posted for my fellow dvxusers and people excited about the film. I absolutely 100% believe the statement you quoted but never would promise it to investors. That would violate the watchdog rules of approaching investors anyway and could put you in legal jeopardy. But...do I "think" it will rock the world......heck ya!

Right, I can see an issue there... Since those statements (including a few others not included in those quotes) are from the investor page, some investors may be able to use those statements against you. Not to mention (IMO) they don't sound very professional.

Update: we are in Southern Cali, about to start our 1st day of producer meetings to iron out the budget. In two days, we should have all ducks in a row in that area.

There are two ways to approach this. One, get financing - and then make a pay or play offer to name actors. Two, get a name actor to attach himself to the project - that attachment will get you financed. As you can imagine, there are different hurdles with both. But if you can get a script to a name actor, that's an easier way.

I'm curious about your shooting stuff. Obviously, it can help in getting financing, if the studio/investors can see some footage.

But really? It's all about the script. So put 90% of your effort there - it's easy to get distracted and take your eye off the ball, when you get to spend time playing with such awesome toys, 3D etc., it can fool you into thinking it's ready before its time. On the other hand, clearly you guys are stoked about the script and it's generating enthusiasm among your prospective investors - kudos. Wish you the best, and I'll be crossing my fingers.
