Look Back & Laugh-A film by Scott Frosch

hehe... i still haven't done anything with uploading... i'm to busy writing this rap song.. when i finish i'm shooting a music video and hopefully you'll laugh. hehe

I thought that was funny.

The actors also seemed real to me, I think they had good chemistry and did really great. And lol at the name Biff Yager. I really loved the story in reverse showing the evolution of their friendship. The story had heart, the characters had depth, a worthwile short to do!
 
I just watched it again, great use of the box at the end flying off. "Hey guys, lets put the box right there." response "Great idea!"

What's it doing there, I don't know but it works, just funny to me seeing it fly off. :)
 
really good and convincing acting from the two main guys especially the guy with glasses and great film. very nice lighting and photography. nicely done. biff yager lol.
 
Hey Scott, time for a review.

I liked some of what you were going for with the interactions and the constantly shifting backward in time. Storywise it works, but what would have sold it and stops it from being a much better film is the actors. It may be the fault of the direction given or even the pacing, but while some of the dialog felt real, none of it was genuine. The delivery wasn't that of two guys who were once close just talking. This was two guys waiting for the other to finish talking.

Lack of reactions during the exchanges, or even one cutting in on the other, actually listening to what is being said.. that would have sold it. Instead the lines came out scripted and disingenuous. There was a lot of obvious acting going on. Your guys had a good look for it and we could believe them, but it really wasn;t there. If you have to go steal reactions from other places to make the cut even better, I'd seriously suggest it. It will also tighten up the edit to have the dialog coming faster, so consider more of an overlap if you can pull it off.

I know you do mostly industrial videos, a lot of commercial stuff, and that right now is working against you in terms of how you light. You had come nice looking shots in there, don;t get me wrong, but your shadows were all too generic, not really tellign us enough about the room and the scene in itself. The lighting felt a little too polished when it really should have been a little grungier. Think of lighting as a storytelling element instead of just to make the scene pretty or so we can see... but reveals information about the scene and in some cases, the characters.

All in all it was a decent effort. Tighten up the story and the dialog. If anything get a decent dialog writer on board and then rehearse the hell out of your actors until it's flowing and feels natural to them.

Overall I enjoyed the film, but would have to lean more towards exactly what Rodney said. I think the performances could have been better, and tighter acting with crossing dialog over the cuts more would really have helped. The opening title sequence was really good.

Like I said, overall I enjoyed it. The writing was good. Nice work!
 
My critique for Look Back and Laugh
The story:
I like the "memento" style of telling a story backwards. Good stuff! The theme of Betrayal was very subtle in this one - liked it.

The acting:
Both of the leads really had an amazing chemistry together. Great dialogue delivery.

The camerawork:
Straight and to the point.

The editing:
Liked the creative touch at the beginning when it cuts to color when they bump fists. Title sequence was awesome! Editing pace was pretty good.

The sound and music:
Fits in well.. great!

Overall impression:
Kept me interested all throughout. Good job

Its time for my critique on this one. Well overall loved the story line and how you went back in time. very cool. I think the only think that was missing was the acting. I didnt feel like the 2 guys knew each other or even liked each other. It felt as if they were reading off cards. I have to admit the kids in the last scene felt alot more smooth then the adults. Overall good film, thanks.
 
I enjoyed this film.

I loved that you told the story backwards. I did that once and I know how hard it can be to write. I especially liked that it ended up with how they met. It was actually kind of sweet and it gave the story a much different (and more positive) energy then if you had told the tale traditionally. Well done.

Lastly, great opening credits.
 
I really enjoyed this one. Love the way you told the story here, that was very cool how you took it all the way back.

Cool title sequence and song there. Acting was very good, I liked those two guys. They definitely had some good moments together in the film. Nice script too, with some good lines. Film was shot well, I thought the black and white thing at the beginning was pretty neat too.

Some really cool songs and score underneath the film, good job there. Good job on sound, nothing distracting, wasn’t thinking about sound at all, so that’s a good sign.

Memorable Moment

“Holy crap! Biff Yager” Love it. Another favourite was the moment where they get kicked out of the bar and there’s that freeze frame, classic expression. Little bits like that really made this film sing – it felt like it had a lot packed in, but the story itself was really simple and effective. I love that.

Overall one of my favourites. Charming film. Congratulations.
