C200: Let's give Canon a list of items that should be fixed in the next firmware update!

Also experiencing the thing when the AF get caught off guard when someone blinks.. You see it mostly on the background changing focus. Very annoying I'm afraid, hopefully fixable in firmware.
Page 87 of the manual. "If you use face detection together with the tracking function the camera will be able to track the main subject more reliably"
Are you doing this?

I have to say, I have no issues with face detection when people blink. At all. I have had a couple of weird lighting setups where it just plain wouldn't stay locked on a face. Also, issues with bangs, glasses, hats and all of the other stuff where face detection just doesn't seem to work. But never blinking. As a matter of fact, the lead dancer in one of the dance tutorials I shot a couple of months ago had a nervous blinking problem, he blinked a lot when he was nervous and the face detection on our C200 or C300 MKII b camera never wavered.

Besides the joystick control of iso etc. i would like an option to turn off touch screen, we offten shoot with just the viewfinder to save battery.

Do you think this could be implemented with just firmware or would doing so require hardware modifications? I don't know what I don't know about this? If it was possible with only firmware, would be a good feature. If it requires hardware modification, it won't be happening.

- Timelapse mode only gives you 5 second intervals. Even the original C300 Mk I had more interval options than that.

- Philip Bloom mentions this in his review, but it would be nice if you could switch into Focus Tracking mode and just instantly tap on the screen to select your focus point. Right now you have to press a customized button or select a menu option every time you want to select a new point to track. This adds an extra step that is unecessary.

- Better 120 frames per second. FS7’s high frame rates looks so much better than the C200’s 120fps. Too much aliasing in the C200’s 120fps.

- Moveable waveform please. If we have to have the waveform covering 1/4 of the image, then we need to be able to slide it whereever we want. I hope Canon eventually learns that we don’t want our menus and tools sitting right on top of the image.

- Ability to shoot 2k or 1080p in Canon Raw Light!!!

1. Adding timelapse mode intervals seems possible in firmware.
2. Not sure about activating Tracking by screen tap being do-able with a firmware update?
3. Quality adjustment/bit rate of 120 FPS doesn't sound like a firmware option but who knows for sure? Only a firmware/electronics engineer?
4. Being able to move the waveform would be logical and a good firmware update
5. Kind of already asked for this in #5 in the OP list

Regarding number 2. The 5d mark IV works this way, so it doesn’t seem entirely unreasonable. However, I understand that there may be some reason the C200 can’t. Certainly seems like a reasonable ask.

Can't understand how this can be an issue if you have face detection set to face only? In this mode, if the camera loses the subject, the focus plane doesn't change, it stays where it was. I guess unless your subject is moving toward or away from camera?

Yes this is how it should behave, if it looses focus, it should just stop right where it is right? However, this is not the case, and that is the issue. "Face only" doesn't behave as it should.

I can upload some examples where the autofocus fails when people blink next week! :)

"Face only" doesn't behave as it should.

Interesting timing. I did a shoot last night where the subject was sitting at a 3/4 angle to me in a chair. Room was lit fine with available light, perfect exposure. Was using face detection with the 70-200 2.8 at about 15' away wide open at 2.8 so fairly shallow DOF. Face detection was set to face only and yet when the face detection would lose the subjects face, massive focus hunting ensued, which I agree, should not happen. The whole idea of face only is so that when the face detection loses the subject it DOESN'T hunt. I ended up switching to manual focus to get the shoot done but it was very frustrating. I'm wondering if this is another bug?

Have also had “face only” respond this way and it was quite annoying.

Yes, it was very frustrating as face recognition normally is "set it and forget it" for straight on, well lit interviews. It also made me remember how annoying manual focus is when shooting in more difficult situations. With the ambient light levels (this was a low key doc shoot so didn't light it) I had to shoot at about 150mm at 2.8 so DOF was shallow, since it was a 3/4 shot at an angle, only the talent's eye nearest to camera was in sharp focus, other eye, not so much, owing to the shallow DOF.

improved performance with 512GB CFast cards? would this even be possible?

Because The c200 uses ex-fat as formatting system there is a issue with larger volumes and or cards with large amount of files.
With ex-fat the camera needs to read the entire format-table into memory to know were it is able to write new footage to.
With the 512GBcards the c200 sometimes times-out during the reading of the format-table and reports "no-card" or "no files on card" scary right?
However when you power-cycle the camera, turn it off and on again, clears the memory and usually the card registers as normal and your good to go.
It can also happen with 256cards but less likely because the camera more often has enough time/memory to process the format-table.

What do you mean with improved performance? longer run times?
In that case the 512GB cards record fine for 68min .
Maybe canon can address the ex-fat readout time-out in fimware and even make larger capacities possible.

I thought of another thing I'd like to see and that is being able to set one of the control dials (such as the one on the body) to control headphone volume. This makes more sense to me rather than having to assign increase/decrease volume to two of the buttons, thus gaining back the ability to use those for something else.

I have my headphone volume mapped to buttons 5 and 6 since gain and shutter are easily accessible through the quick menu but I guess they could map it to the iris wheel? What do you guys all think of this, is this something that more than R_Marvin wants?

This isn't a camera/firmware request, but I'd really like to be able to export clips from Canon Raw Development without having each individual clip placed in a subfolder. It's incredibly annoying. If anyone knows how to set the Canon Raw Development software to just export the clips to one designated folder, without have a million folders generated for each clip, please let me know. Otherwise, consider this a request to add to the list. Having to manually drag every single clip out of a unique folder is ridiculous. It's like having a stack of one dollar bills, and then deciding to keep each dollar in its own, unique wallet. It is completely unnecessary, especially when the filename of each clip gives you all the information you need. There is no need for individual folders.

I don't know if this is helpful as I don't know if you use mac or not, but I've used a 'flatten folders' Applescript in the past which at least automates that process: https://www.macworld.com/article/1140725/flattenfolder.html

That article is quite old now, but it should still be possible.

I agree though, they should just update the software to output to one folder in the first place!

Thanks, I am using Mac OS X and I've looked into terminal commands and stuff, but the steps always seem a bit too "hacky" and involved for my level of programming skills. I'll look into the AppleScript thing. This folder thing adds one more annoying step to dealing with Canon Raw. It's like Canon is doing everything they can to make this process difficult. Only being able to export 4k files in ProRes 444 and not ProRes LT or standard ProRes saves you no space as ProRes 444 is almost the same file size as Canon Raw Light. You can export ProRes proxies in HQ, LT and standard but only in 1080p. So they're protecting their middle ground 4k codec in post, too??? Geez Canon, chill out.

I'd really like to see some major changes in the Cinema Raw Development tool.

- Option to Export Prores LT, Standard and HQ in 4k
- More options to adjust raw exposure tools, similar to Red or Canon's own DSLR Raw.
- Option to export single files to one folder without using unique subfolders for every single clip
- Noise reduction option while transcoding.
- Ability to add custom LUTS for export.

Guys, not to tamp down on your discussion, I agree, but since this isn't a camera firmware issue, you should start a new thread for discussions about requests for the Cinema RAW Development software. If possible, I'd like to keep this thread on point so that Canon can easily divine what users are realy wanting for the upcoming firmware updates and probably the C100 MKIII, if that camera is ever introduced. That's the reason too that I have tried to keep ideas that could only be updated through firmware and not feature requests or updates that would require hardware changes.
