Let's get the buzz going!

Presented in Flash is not great - at least not necessarily. I haven't had a whole lot of luck playing back live-action films through Flash, and I know the new version is supposed to deal with that, but still, compatibility with ANOTHER new format? Plus, no full-screen option?
I most definitely hope there will be a downloadable option, at the least.

OK... I've just finished reading all these threads on the sci fi fest and I have come to a couple of conclusions.

First of all, why do we feel the need to constantly ***** and complain about things that are being given to us. I mean here Jarred & Barry S are investing their time, money, and energy into providing filmmakers with an idea, outlet, and stage to showcase their skills. On top of that they are offering prizes for the individuals who demonstrate excellence in their productions. Why the hell do we need to ***** about method of delivery, time of delivery, and other things that are being given for free?

Second, and most importantly, has anyone taken a moment and just thanked Jarred, Barry S, and the members of this community for making this happen? I know I haven't, so here it is.

Jarred, Barry S, and everyone who has entered and supported this festival, thank you very much for giving me the motivation, theme, possibility of reward and recognition, and most importantly the opportunity to remain a part of this community.

I want to second that TheYankee, and thanks everyone, especially Jarred and Barry S! This is a fun opportunity and a great fest! It's time to put our preferences aside. Peace!

..So to anyone bitching about the prizes, give me a break. There are incredible prizes, the mods investing a ton of time and money into this festival, and just get excited and support the nearly 60 members of the DVXUser family who said 'screw it, i'm gonna make a damn sci fi'.
Just my opinion.

Well said -- just to quell the discension wagon however -- I think everyone is totally stoked about the prizes as they are -- somebody just said too bad more non DVX films didn't enter -- and in a perfect utopian Walgreens world it'd be cool to toss them some kind of bone as well.

I enter for the sake of making the film and knowing that it has a gauranteed vocal audience ... my message in a bottle will be answered ... it won't be an empty theater ... there will be a discussion.

I'm buzzed because this time, instead of just watching, I'll actually get to vote -- this is my 100th post!!!

I'm stoked like a bloke from hoboken token and choken on the sh*t that he's smokin'...

I can't wait to see what place I think I could have finished in.

(I also agree r.e. the bitching... the entitlement attitude displayed by some on the boards is enough to make me wish they weren't around...)

grrrrr .... :(

no one said that -- they just wished there were prizes that would entice more non DVX entries

they weren't bitching about what's available -- just an idle thought someone had that it might be cool if there were other cam's / just more people envoled period -- not even an -man it sucks because there's no prizes for other cams -- just an thought that they wished more non DVX cams were envolved -- it came from a place of the more the merrier, not these prizes suck and why the hell don't they have them for other cameras.

EDITED TO ADD: Ok re-read Yankee's Post an seems like he's talking about the scifi threads in general in terms of people bitching, not just what's been said here.

OK -- I'll shuttup about it now.

I'm glad your stoked, but disapointed that you didn't enter buddy :(

I haven't talked to you in forever -- so I'm glad to know that you will be out there watching at least :)

It's great to see you all excited about the films. I'm with spidey. This is the first dvxfest I was able to enter, and am real excited to see what other people came up with. I started getting involved at the tail end of Zombiefest.
JTyner and I are both totally psyched! This is our first film-fest of ANY kind! We were virgins until DVX Sci-Fest :p

JARRED and BARRY S., and whomever else helped put Scifest on, a huge THANK YOU! Thank you for all the time, hard work, long hours, and thankless nights putting all this together. Without these DVXUSER contests, I may have NEVER had the incentive to ACTUALLY shoot something creative again. With each short, my filmmaking skills are getting more polished, I think (certainly script needs a LOT of work still), and soon, I hope to graduate to making a full-length feature, thanks to these little contests.

Indeed. Its real tough to get together the motivation to go through all the work required to shoot something, but with everything that the indeterminate they have put together for us here, I'd say it's harder to find a reason not to.

I think we're all going stir-crazy with anticipation...heh!

meanwhile...back at the ranch...after completing our sci-fi entry, I was movitivated to finally finish a full-length feature script I've had running around my head for the last 3 years. It's a southern murder drama (freakin creepy as hell).

Also managed to attract some talented actors and hair/makeup professionals and the open auditions are this Friday with shooting scheduled for April. I've been shocked at how excited and eager people are to participate in my filming activities locally. Maybe the start of something wonderful and fun. My biggest task right now is securing additional funding for the project...but with some luck and hard work, hopefully that will come about as well.

Any tips you guys care to share about securing funding for films would be most welcome.

I can honestly say that this forum, people, and event has really made a positive change in not only my life, but a lot of local folks too....hell...it gives us all something fun to do.

Life in a small college town.

thank Jarred and Barry S!

thank Jarred and Barry S!

I also would like to thank those visionary guys, Jarred and Barry S.

Yeah J and B, thanks for the opp. to create these shorts amonst friends. I think thats the strongest part of the contest. Its not just random people submitting to a fest. Its like friends and family.
I kind of like it being DVX only and watching everything without the video look. It levels the playing field. For those who dont like the video look might vote lower on a short that has a better story only because that look irks them.
I love these 3 month long contests. It gives plenty of time to come up with a decent script and get cast and crew together.
Thanks again guys.

  1. Target the vault teller, they have the most cash
  2. Do it around 3-4pm, when their cash drawers are at their highest amounts
  3. Do it on a COLD AND SUNNY day, so you don't look immediately suspicious for the huge hooded sweatshirt & large dark sunglasses
  4. Since you live in a small college town, hit a neighboring one instead
OR, add those as some kind of element to your feature, draw up a PPM (private placement memorandum), and start seeking the accredited investors in your area.
