Other: Just ordered a new camera...

Obviously I believe in it or I wouldn't have pre-ordered but I'm definitely not trying to convince myself or others. Why not just have a positive outlook, and being these are forums we will end up discussing what we think are pros/cons no matter what the subject is.

In reality it's just as easy to wait until it's released and there are some real reviews. I agree it's very chancy at this stage. No denying in that.

Cheers,

The pros/cons are what I was discussing. When there's footage they'll be more to discuss. Now, if as you optimistically hope they already have a plastic prototype, why is there not sample test footage?

Dennis, out of shear concern for your money, is there a phone number to call and talk to somebody? Seriously, I know people are not supposed to use phones anymore but it would be appropriate to verify a company little bit before a pre-order.

I don't have any interest in this camera, mainly because I'm pretty content with my cameras right now, but I see a few red flags with this Craft deal.
Where's the "face" of this company? No picture of the proud designer/design team? The trademark for the CRAFT name was applied for last November, just 5 months ago?? Is there a business address?

The priceing looks off, doesn't it? I would expect 2-3x the published price for this camera system. Global shutter, nice. The dual battery slots look too small.

Who did all the slick marketing graphics/CGI? How did they get paid if this company hasn't even been around, producing anything prior to this? The web-site refers to the images of the camera as "photos", an they don't look quite real. I agree with others, it looks like some nice CAD work. Why show the lens mount/sensor housing in someone's hand, it's like they are trying a little too hard to look convincing.

I hope it's not some kind of scam but I sure wouldn't take a gamble on them. If your trademark application has not cleared all the hurdles, why would you have it engraved into the camera parts already?

The site says the camera was designed in the U.S. and will be manufactured in a foreign country. Doesn't say which country. Why keep it a secret? They have to put it on the camera when they ship them anyways.

Hope all goes well for those who sent in their money.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being skeptical. Skepticism is a very positive force in the world.

Also we spent a year being openly skeptical abut how BM would be able to deliver on their on-paper promises. And we were right.

Red were/are the modular camera people but DSMC 1 lasted 4 years before being updated. Jarred Land has confirmed that the DSMC 2 modular architecture will be standard until 2020 so that's pretty good return on gear.

I love that Jim Jannard quote...'How do you become a millionaire? Be a billionaire and start a camera company.”

Red had unbelievable resources at their disposal when they started out. A blank cheque really. So without info on Craft it is hard to understand how they will deliver their product to market.

Personally I think this sort of thing could only get off the ground if it was open source so all the world's best could work on it.

And why does the black & white cityscape background photo on their web-page have a shutterstock watermark??

I only have wild guesses at why there is no footage yet. Maybe just part of their release strategy. Maybe they are have some stuff being shot in secret as we speak for the next stage of their launch this spring/summer. Since they plan on shipping in December obviously they will have to show footage sooner or later. I take these guys as methodical and precise, not hippies with a cause trying to start a revolution.

About the LCD screen etc.. I know more people using 3rd party VF's or 3rd party 7" monitors compared to the stock option for almost 99% of cameras. With a wide assortment of 3rd party VF's and monitors people can really continue to pick whatever suits them best. As for a lens hood for the 5" screen, RED has a similar 5" LCD screen and lens hood options do exist for it.

@bassman- No idea if there's a phone number, I haven't seen one. I'm not worried about it to be honest.

@ben- The name of the CEO for Craft was published on another forum, and link to his linked in profile. To be honest, I haven't bothered checking it out but anyone is free to do so if they want. Maybe he's a "billionaire" like Jim.

Early DIY camera from Craft using off the shelf parts. Hm, so they do have a past and history. Learning new things about them every day.

Just to be clear Dennis, I've got no problem with you drinking the koolaid, I'm just saying that the rest of us have got some solid reasons to sit on the sidelines and see how that ends up working for you. I'll definitely be interested to see how you're feeling next April when, assuming all goes as the CraftMaster tells us it will, you'll have had the camera in your hands for 4 months and will have some field tested opinions to share.

Just seems a bit off to me. Typos on the website, little to no replies on the FB page, Christmas photoshoppy image posted in April, no test footage, not at NAB in the "release" year. A phone call with some information would clear it all up though.

I could be way off base here though which is why I am bringing up the old school phone contact.

Yeah James, let's hope it goes well. As mentioned numerous times or at least I hoped to cast the impression that I really don't have any real "major" expectations going into this other than hoping that I end up pleasantly surprised.

I will always have my other camera's to rely on anyway, we're not talking $20k or something. This is just a bit of fun I'm having.

If these guys ship on time (December) it certainly won't take 4 months to evaluate the camera. It was known in lighting speed the issues with the mini 4.6K the day folks started receiving their cameras.

I say April because it's a year from now. But beyond that, we've seen time and time again that manufacturers rush cameras out with firmware problems. Assuming they ship on time (a big if) they may still have firmware issues where the Day One experience is different than the 4 months later experience.

Are you afraid Dennis's money will be taking a little haircut?

Would this, by any chance what so ever, be Kraft Cheese?

Viddovation; Comes with cheese plate?

He who starts the puns going never gets any credit for it.
