Other: Just ordered a new camera...

Dennis, I hope you luck with the new camera! If it turns out to be good, please let us know. I would also be curious to know if the Terra 6K or 5K is a good option. The 5K model does have global shutter along with the option of rolling shutter, in case someone has to do quick pans.

And why does the black & white cityscape background photo on their web-page have a shutterstock watermark??

Good catch. Why won't Craft pay the $30 for the stock photo? Or if they've paid, why weren't they careful enough to use the image without the watermark? Or if they're just trying to pinch pennies, why didn't they just go out and take a night shot of the city themselves? (They're in Atlanta.) Or actually there are many, many explicitly free photos of night-time cityscapes on the Internet.

there's a thing with no matter what's posted online, etc.. some folks will just manage to find something suspicious or that looks wrong in some form or another etc.. yeah the shutterstock image is funny but a lot of website templates you buy off the shelf use shutterstock images as placeholders and then the idea is that the designer later goes ahead and replaces them. In this case maybe it was slightly overlooked. It is pretty hard to see the stamp after all. It definitely never caught my eye. Or on the other hand maybe they are a bunch of cheap bastards scrutinizing every penny possible and making sure cash flow is spent where it counts.

Some more information possibly on the guys behind "Craft"
www.betweenpixels.tv
At least we know the camera is actually being designed by an outfit and group of people who seem to actually know something about producing imagery and what it takes to do so. Definitely don't get a wishy washy happy go lucky hippy vibe from these guys.

@RASL, thanks for your kind wishes. I mean as I've said before I'm not going into this with huge expectations so really I don't care what happens in the end. I'm praying it will be better than BMD or Kinefinity. Will it be a RED Weapon or F65? No. No it probably won't be. I've seen some really awesome and amazing footage from the Kinefinity 5K and yes I think rolling shutter needs to be evaluated and so long as it's in the same league as our modern day super35mm camera's like C300, FS7, F5 then it will be good to go. It's also nice they are in their 4/5th year so not an entirely "new" company doing "new" things. The Craft guys do have their work cut out for them, that's 100% for sure.

Well I put my refundable deposit down on the Kinefinity Terra 5K. For paying dp work? Most likely not- choose the best tool for the job and of course budget. For work I produce? You bet. I'll wait a month or two after release in case the Terra turns out like the BMD UM4.6K fiasco. Some people are getting really nice stuff out of the miniKini

Just for fun I sent them a polite email about the shutterstock watermark. Seems it's gone now. Don't really think it's much reason to scrutinize the whole operation - easily overlooked. On the other hand, there isn't much information to scrutinize yet. Dennis, I hope this turns out well for you. It is always exciting to see new players in the field, better ideas sometimes come from it. I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

I am really looking forward to hearing all about the camera, Dennis and it may even inspire me to take a drive to Toronto for a first hand look!

Hey congrats on your deposit and at least the Kinefinity guys have some history with working camera's to show. Hopefully they don't skip on the global shutter delivery like BMD just did, this is what I really want from Craft Camera and the modularity of course.

Thanks for the wishes, I have to repeat myself again and again… I'm not naively thinking this is "in the bag" or that anyone's hit a home run. There is a lot of work to be done where others companies or groups have failed, you look at a company like like BMD who have a lot more money and resources at their disposal and still couldn't manage to get it right out of the gate.

I wish the Craft guys the best of luck, that's all I can do at this point.

Yes for sure, it might be 2017 or 2018 though. :)

I'm really enjoying this thread! Danger and Intrigue, subtle inferred drama, with a touch pun to round out the flavor.
I looked at the Kina-link you shared. Their footage looks really nice, especially the night shots at the gate.

In other news... I'm of the feeling that Craft jumped the gun with asking for money at this time.
As a company, you either have seed money to start it or you are working for yourself for free and have another job. WHEW!
Then you design and build your "one off", which gives you a beta camera, PUN ALERT, and all the knowledge of mass producing them based on the mock-up beta.
In parallel you are already establishing a relationship with the overseas manufacturer(s). They give you the minimum order numbers which gives you the dollar amount needed for a production run.

I wonder about the design and the materials for the housing "rings". Will that be from billet or composite materials or plastic?

From my perspective, apertus° took a very long time to develop the AXIOM, most of it publicly displayed and discussed since they are open platform. Wonder why this isn't a KickStarter campaign?

In any case, this should be interesting to see what happens with this company..... and of course your camera.

Haha, I didn't mean to suggest you thought as such. And yes, as we've seen with the Ursa Mini 4.6k, there is a long way to go, and sacrifices to be made at this price point. Nevertheless, the fact that companies keep trying means new ideas and ingenuity. And it's early supporters such as yourself that make it possible for them to do so. I'm interested to see how this plays out - and, yes, hoping for the best.

Dennis: This sounds like a fun experiment. I hope things go well.
My main concern when looking at the camera is that it looks like it was created by a designer. It looks so good: “Just snap in the modules you want.” But do your desires show up as neatly packaged units? It seems strange to have a separate module for sound. I would want one module that gets me most of what I need: XLR inputs, V-mount, SDI and HDMI out, etc.

Thanks Jim!

These guys definitely had "design" in mind, and I sure hope they didn't overlook cooling. I'm not sure how a sensor without a large heat sink or room for fans will stay cool during operation, and especially with the higher frame rates? The unit does look rather small.

About sound, I think they imagined uses for the camera such as drone flying, or maybe even as a stills RAW camera where sound is not important or required? I really don't know.

I can't help but wonder how the heck they can post all those prices at this stage. How did they come up with those numbers? If they had an actual prototype, they'd put it under glass at NAB. So, no working copy yet. All the big players run into problems going from drawing board to finished product, and addressing those issues can affect pricing. Why publish price so soon? I think the photo of the lens in the palm of a hand with a Christmas tree in the background is fake. If that component actually existed back in December 2015, why no photo of the other modules? Are they busy building a cool, modular camera system or just busy rendering fake images? Supposed to be test footage by the Fall. The only names I can find associated with their DIY camera are a couple of French people. So far it's just vaporware and the clock is ticking on them putting out sample footage by Fall. No way is this thing going to see the light of day. Total scam.

Hey Dennis- shooting a small feature with a pair of F55 and Cooke S4's. I dunno- this combo looks pretty good. It's actually been a few years since I shot with the F55. Not the most popular camera in my market- the F55 became the budget choice- but the director is damn happy.
I see no reason to sell- unless it's simply a matter of producer appeal. Seems a darn competent camera. Very useful EI/ISO range- nothing a little NR in post can't tune up.

13 stops of DR for $3k is so 2013 BMCC :P
And I have a feeling the sensor is more like a BMPC but I'd love to be wrong...

Not that BMPC is a bad thing--but home boy has been on the cutting edge too long. I'll wait this out for the 2nd/3rd generation. Though $3 grand is kind of chump change in the big scheme. I'll observe and let others be the beta testers.
