Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman!?

What the **** is going on? He was only giving one word answers for the most part. Seemed very nervous and didn't want any part of being there.

I think it's an act. I don't buy the fact that he's going into hip-hop and dropping acting. He was certainly very odd during his appearance and Dave ended up having a lot of fun at his expense.

Is this his version of Borat? I know he's having plenty of this stuff filmed. Including a lot of crazy hip-hop stage action.

Near the end he and Dave threw some jabs back and forth at each other.

Dave closed with...
"Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight. We owe an apology to Farrah Fawcett."
Publicity stunt or on the way to a nervous breakdown?
Hard to tell these days.

Big difference though, Crispin rambled on and on. Joaquin barely said a word.

I haven't seen the Phoenix clip from Letterman yet. It should be online soon I would imagine. I'll check it out when I can find it.

I agree with your original post though, this could very well be an act. Although, Joaquin Phoenix is supposedly going to quite acting and be a rapper.

Add this to the ever growing list of strange celebrity behavior, which I'm kinda tired of frankly. Last week it was Christian Bale. A few years ago it was Tom Cruise and Oprah's couch. Just make the movies and enjoy life people. I'd be a much happier camper than I am now if I got to make films with nearly unlimited resources and get paid ridiculously well to do it.

Crispin made me laugh my ass off.

I gotta admit he did for me too.

Okay, I watched the video. Joaquin Phoenix seems out of it. Maybe not on drugs, hard to tell with the shades on. To me he just seemed like he didn't want to be there. Letterman kinda egged him on a bit too, which seemed to piss Phoenix off a bit.

Whoa..wierd. Seems to me like this is him getting majorly into character for the docu/mocumentary he's going to be in by Cassey Affleck about his rapping career...Or maybe he's just going all late Jim Morrison. Who knows.

I agree, that's why I like Letterman.

Phoenix did nothing to help promote his new movie. Hell, I can't even remember the name of it. Letterman talked about it far more than he did.

Besides, JP was pissy right away. As if you are not going to get a few questions about your drastically altered appearance.

He'll be back in acting soon enough. Hell, I don't think he left. :)

I loved this interview, but I was pretty bummed when a quick search on the internet yielded that it is likely a hoax for a documentary (what kind of friend would blow the cover on this thing?). If it was a hoax I wish I didn't know so the payoff would be that much better. However, it might be real and if it is fake this is one heck of a method acting job and I've got to give him props for staying in character for such a long period of time throughout this "change" in his career.

The whole thing was an act. Letterman was in on it.

Well with all the headlines it's getting I'd say it's one helluva a successful promo then. I would never bother to give a thought about JP and here I am writing about him......

To me, he's probably one of the best of his generation. Right up there with Ledger, Paul Giammanti and Johnny Depp. EDIT- Of course, we're talking US actors here...

I remember him on Leno doing press for Gladiator.... (which was before he got "sober") the guy was totally wasted. Leno ends the interview by saying "I'd love to have you back and maybe next time you'll actually be here".

This reminds me of a really awkward interview from The Daily Show from back around 2006 where a woman is being interviewed, and doesn't speak much at all. She gives one word answers at best, and doesn't elaborate on anything. It gets really awkward, and Jon looks like, "Seriously, this is bombing fast. I'm going to lose my job." I tried finding it, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I don't think it was planned as the Letterman was.
