Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman!?

An act imo. Pretty funny actually.
Although he's acting impaired, nothing in his actions suggests that he is.
His often immediate response to audience reactions and select questions are pretty quick.

Usually if alcohol is invilved there is obvious facial muscle relaxation and often an exaggeration of expression, especially for an actor. A stumbling response if you will.

If Hallucinogens were involved the response time, or lack thereof, would be more consistent.

I didn't see any indication of any impairment physically or emotionally.

I didn't see the Letterman appearance, but every picture of the dude in the last month shows him in the same lame Blues-Brothers-ripoff outfit; and every time he actually talks to anybody, its to totally assure them that he's really not faking his alleged retirement from acting and his alleged hip-hop career. To paraphrase the Bard, methinks dude doth protest too much.
