Editing on an Internal Drive with PowerMac

Hi guys, I've been doing a lot of editing on several different drives. We've got a couple LaCie's going through Firewire 800 and two internal drives. One of the internal drives just has the software and the other has a load of media.

The other day the media internal drive failed on me. I managed to get all the necessary media off of it, but I remembered reading somewhere that editing on an internal drvie is not recommended, is there any truth to this?

Any help would be great, whether it's worth going for just another cheap internal, or investing in an e-Sata card with a bay that holds 5 drives and such.

If you are editing standard def video, internal drives are okay. (been doing it for years with no issues) For best results install two of the same drive (if you have two open bays) and do a RAID 0 array with them. Keep your media on the new drives and your editing application should stay on the original internal drive.

You should never edit on the same drives that you have your programs on. I have been told this by techs from Adobe (Premiere Pro) and Final Cut techs.

To emphasize it; internal boot drives should not act as media drives as well. You don't want the NLE and OS trying to compete with data access and transfers.

Yes. Keep your NLE application on the boot drive in the Applications Folder. Put your project media on the new internal drive(s).
