Iscorama Anamophic Lens Test

If you watch closely in Hollywood films, since a lot are using anamorphic lenses these days, some lenses are actually square fronted and you can see that the farther back you go the more horizontally stretched and square-ish the bokeh becomes. It's an artifact I wish I had the money to have.

It's true, I noticed that watching GI Joe even

remember reading a Michael Bay interview for the making of Pearl harbor.. in the hospital scene after the bombing started, a lot of shots had these organic looking artifacts, and he said they were the result of an accidental damage to one lens and they liked the look so they replicated the damage on several more lenses... LOL you don't need money to get certain "looks"

I have a Satec lens here, it looks like a beast, weighs a ton, and feels like it comes from outer space.

It does have a square front on the lens.

I will see if I can get it to work on a dslr.
Here's a few pictures I took of the lens compared with a nikon 55 f1.2

LEN-ZILLA.....AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!! (Lol) If it does the job....OK....might be a bit of a pain to lug around.

So, I have received my Sankor 16C Anamorphic lens. I am waiting to receive the step down ring to connect it to my Nikon lens. I also picked up a Bell and Howell Anamorphic lens. I'll need to rig it also.

Having said that I shot some footage just holding the lens. Do you guys want to see that footage, (it is a little shaky)....or should I just wait until it's "properly" rigged. (if there is such a term) I'm actually excited about the first look. The Bell and Howell has really strong lens flares. The Sankor has lens flares also, but not nearly so strong. The Sankor seems to focus easier. Obviously I'll do more intensive and conclusive testing once they are rigged, but I suspect that some of you are either wanting an Iscorama or at least a "fix" until CBS hooks us up.

Hey Squig! I have a quick question: These 2 anamorphic lenses are "2x". This means that I should compress the image to 50% right? (height) Or stretch the image by 200%. (I'll have to size it down to fix it in the frame anyway...) But is that right? I have already tested this and it looks right, and MAN IS IT WIDE!!!!

Yes it'd like to see the footage

Here are some screen grabs.

Sankor 16C

Sankor 16C

Bell and Howell

It's not easy to see in this picture, but when you look at the video, there are actually "mini" flares in the shot with the candles. Very subtle....

wow, that actually looks pretty good to me, now I'm really excited to get my Sankor next week. What focal length lens are you using?

That was about 80mm. I'm using a D90. (I believe you just sold yours.) It's a AF-S Nikkor 55-200 (DX).

ps...I loved your short film. Very cool. Congrats on the win.
pps...how do you plan on rigging yours to your camera? I'm planning on using a step down ring, but I think I may have to do more. What are you planning?

ahhh I see, the crop factor takes care of the vignetting then. Great for that size sensor and smaller like GH1. Does the anamorphic distortion seem to help with the stairstepping on D90?

I got the Sankor 16-D which has the larger 52mm rear thread. Hopefully it will screw right in on the Nikon 50mm prime, going to try out some various diopters to magnify, got a hoya +2 on the way to try out first. If that doesn't work I'll have to try a step ring on a higher focal length.

Thanks about VRT, wish us luck on winning a major prize in sept. I could really use a redrock rig.

Stair stepping: I think it does help.
16D: Very cool. I should have looked a little closer. (52 to 52 duh!) :) Nice!

Good luck in Sept!
ps...what camera are you using now? Are you going to go to the 5d? Or something else?

Yeah I've been using a 5D for the past 2 months or so

going to try out some various diopters to magnify, got a hoya +2 on the way to try out first.

Just wondering if you are planning to put the diopter on the prime lens and then attach the anamorphic lens on top or are you putting the diopter actually on the anamorphic lens?

I would think if you put the diopter on the prime and then attached the anamorphic, vignetting would be less of an issue, correct?

doesn't work, diopter has to go on the anamorphic

On another note I finally received my last step ring for the pentax smc super tak 50mm f/1.4 with a combo of 3 step rings and the isco 36 there is almost no vignetting, just a very subtle amount that I kinda like but it could be easily cropped out.

update: sankor adapter came, great flairs holding up to the lens and no major aberrations or anything. However, expect to need appx. 100mm or higher prime to use it with the mk2. Also the rear thread isn't 52mm, it's a little smaller. Not sure of the actual size yet. Going to need to find out to get the proper step rings.

Diopter between the lenses will throw the focus off, squig is correct, it must be in front of the anamorphic

According to

http://lavender.fortunecity.com/lavender/569/anamorphic.html

and some other sources across the interwebs the KOWA 16-H (or 8Z as it was known in Europe) is a very good option among the multitude of anamorphic adapters.

Of course it is a 2x adapter, which yields a crazily wide aspect ratio, although a sensible one at 1280x540.

I've got one on the way from ebay and will dutifully report back.

Vignetting should not be an issue from 50mm on from what I've read.

52-50mm step down ring required for mounting to, let's say, a Nikon 50mm 1.8.
