Iscorama Anamophic Lens Test

is it the 50mm f/2.8 1.5x 2 piece nikon mount? I have one it's very cool.

You using a 1x diopter?

yeah, its a cool one.

squig - yes its the 50mm, i have a little set of tiffens that i have been playing with on this lens...1, 2 and 4...any idea if they make other focal lengths? would love to get a few others and not have to put any lens doublers on for longer focal lengths.

Post some footage of all the anamorphic stuff you have.

Why are you guys using Diopters? 'Splain to me.

I've got a set of Tiffen Diopters, I do remember seeing more.

Rich awesome footage. I've been dying to shoot anamorphic. I had one of these one piece lenses before, the 50, from GoKevincameras but I couldn't get it to play nice on the Letus Ultimate.

I want to try something that gives various focal lengths. If I could get just three different focal lengths that'd be enough for me, of course a wide, medium and a tight.

here is another test.

Kholi - the lens has a minimum focus of maybe 8 feet or something like that ( i have not measured so i might be off a few feet or so)...so in order to focus on anything closer then that you have to use a diopter.

Does the diopter change the field of view?

A 50mm Anamorphic on a S35mm sized sensor is more like a 35mm FOV after the stretch I think... so it's more like what, a 25 or so Full Frame? That's definitely wide enough.

Telephoto extenders would get you to the other focal lengths, but at what cost?

Man I should've kept my Isco 50mm.

Sorry, that's wrong. Diopters don't change FOV. I can't remember what effect they have outside of close focus distance, though.

just realized that i spelled anamorphic wrong...ooops

hehe didn't even notice

I think close focus is 2m (<7 feet) but I haven't measured it myself

I picked up a 10mm iscorama but it's a c-mount so might work on a GH1

There are 2 versions of the 50mm the iscorama and the 2001 MC which is a single piece lens.

the front of the lens we have is an isco 36 anamorphic adapter, I have an isco 54 too (the big bastard) it weighs 2 pounds has a 95mm filter thread and a 77mm rear thread. As far as I know they never made a lens back for these they were just for projectors but I discovered that people used to mount them to lenses on super 8 cameras. The 54 vignettes on the MKII wider than 50mm and isn't as sharp as the 50mm iscorama lens.

here's some more info-

Squig do you have any footage yet of the two that go on the front of the lens? Do they have the same artifacting as the Iscorama 2 piece 50/2.8?

I.E Lens flares and oval OOF areas?

the isco 54 will go wide on the GH1, it didn't vignette @ 28mm on the D90. The panasonic will go even wider but it's only 1.33x. See if you can find something like a kowa 2x for really cool oval lens flares. The isco 54 was $4000 list back in the day, I got mine for $500 AUD.

The isco looks really cool under lights Rich even better than I expected.

not yet me and the kids were half dead with pig flu, we're just coming back to life now. I expect the isco 54 flares will be identical to the 50mm, it's the same design just larger but we'll know for sure in a couple of days when I shoot something.

I can get another Isco Nikon mount right down the street. And now that I think about it, you wouldn't really have to worry about using it wider right? The artifacts dont' show up until about 50mm and beyond.

Just use a Telephoto extender for telephoto shots, regular 25mm lens for wide shots and match in post.

They don't? hehe that might explain why I haven't shot any cool flares because all the testing I did with the 54 and D90 was @ 28-35mm.

How much is it going for? I paid 200 for mine, gokevin wants a fortune for them but it's probably worth it.

the distortion of a 24mm nikkor or the like should match up pretty well with the 50mm anamorphic shots. The other advantage of the anamorphic on the MKII is it deepens the depth of field with minimal light loss.

Actually flares should show up regardless, I meant OOF Oval Bokeh mostly.

Would be nice to have a 25... That's why you must post footage/results with flare tests of the anamorphic adapters on the front of the camrea.

"you must" hehe the jedi mind trick doesn't work on me kholi. I find it does work well on others though.

I don't expect there will be much in the way of bokeh shooting wide with a 1.5x anamorphic. I'll try the 50mm isco and compare it to a 50mm ai @ f/2.8 with the isco 54 and panny. And also the 105mm nikkor @ f4 (widely regarded as one of the sharpest) anything you wanna add to that?

Kholi - the diopters do change the FOV a bit...the change goes up the stronger the diopter.

squig - yes, 72...no real vignetting happens...if there is its soft...and im a huge fan of them anyways so im cool with it.

Let me know if you ever feel like selling any of your iscos.

I did a rough measurement of the lens to see what the actual feild of view is.

The 50mm isco i have measures out to match these numbers.

50mm Iscorama anamorphic = 29mm Full Frame 35mm Still camera
50mm Iscorama anamorphic = 22.5mm Super 35 full ap

give or take a few mm's...i did it by putting the camera on a tripod and measuring its distance from a wall in my house and lining up the edges of frame to match the edges of the wall...took those numbers into a 3d program and punched them into a few cameras...

to get more acurate results i would need to take it out side and measure up something larger and make sure im closer to dead nuts center on the wall...anyways....
