iPad 2 Announced

I'll buy an Ipad as soon as one comes out with video-in. Until then I'll make do with my netbook which does a hell of a lot more for a hell of a lot less.

this digital slate app that claims to be able to put timecode out the headphone jack.

When I saw the iPad commercial with a quick cut of the pad as a digi-slate I thought, "hmm... now you've got my attention."

If the iPad can function as well as a Denecke slate... with the same accuracy, and send a signal out the headphone jack, which I can plug into a Sennheiser G3, to jump TC to a camera or recorder... pff... instant bargain. What would you rather have? A back-lit denecke or a perfectly back-lit digital slate where you can have notes + a still from the upcoming take? Maybe even have some kind of metadata to go with each take, such as TOD etc. That would make the edit a breeze... (you could communicate both the actual TC as well as show a frame from each cut, to the editor, without having to go through all the footy to do so, if the iPad took a picture of the shot with the "clap".)

A "smart slate" app would sell one of those to me... even if it didn't do everything else it does.

It's funny how some people just hate it. Amusing really.

The thing is, its uses vary with the individual. I seldom use my laptop anymore. The iPad is far too convenient. It's replaced it. It's extremely practical and I don't regret it at all.

That's what's great about it. I can do many different things and everyone has something different they love about it. It's not something you'll figure out playing with the touch screen.

I drive a relatively cheap car but I don't ***** and moan at the people who drive more expensive ones that basically do the same thing. I've ridden in those cars, I enjoy their advantages and comforts as well.

Again, to each their own.

I have this slate program, by the way. It's on my iPhone 4 and my iPad. It works pretty well, yes you can sync it, but there are some small fundamental flaws that are pretty no-brainers if you actually work in production and post.

Still, for 20.00 dollars, it's better than a dumb slate once you get used to it.

You're right about the metadata, as well. It should keep it in a .TXT file that you can import into FCP or something like that. Dunno how it would work, though.

You know when iPad will just get too sick?

When you're using it as the Timeline and Tools to edit in a bay.

The tactile feel of sliding through, pinching sequences, rolling etc will be incredible. And you'd be able to break away from sitting down constantly, move around, keep your blood flowing while chopping.

It'll also be sick for audio guys to use as a pad.

It's coming.

There is a difference between using one and demoing one.

We also thought originally it was a glorified e book reader, but it is a convenient information appliance at one end, a versatile tool for so many applications at the other.

Six of our neighbors have purchased one, and several will be getting a second one.

We paid $500.00 for ours. Rarely use our laptop any more.
