If Nikon fails...

Your right. But... I am hopeful. I also think that this guy is well aware of the fact that the d700 and the 5d are in the same ballpark and that the 5d does video. If Nikon doesn't release the new d700 with video. A lot of people are going to jump ship. Yes a still camera should take stills, which it will do, and I am sure they will be amazing. For me though, if I can have still and quality video in the same package...sold.

I have hopes for a great Nikon VDSLR with a FF sensor. This would really put an end to my search for ONE still- and video- camerabody.

But a D700x would have to make tremendous improvement over D90/D300s.

1. Full HD without row skipping.
2. Decent codec. H264 is good but there are better ones.
3. Multiple framerates and rez for overcranking and possible jellofree video.
4. No sensor heatup that limits recording time or picture quality.

Are they up to the challenge? Or are we just dreaming?

in my opinion mjpeg is much better, but it obviously needs to be much much higher bitrate than the d90 uses. h.264 makes assumptions about the image, its structure and motion, and causes artifacts at any bitrate. mjpeg goes from crappy to lossless in a very predictable way as the bitrate increases. much more post friendly.

M JPEG codec is great, just need higher bitrate... but sd or cf cards r/w around 45Mb/s so it is a limit... and FAT32 file system can handle just 4GB. Thats why the rec limit! 7D has also 4 GB limit which is about 12 min rec time.

sorry if I confused U... I am talking about D7 rec time, why just 12 min... and maybe the next nikon vdslr....if it will use FAT32 file system.
I know D90 has a heating problem (I have D90) thats why the 5 min limit...

does the 7D have a 12 min limit record time?

I agree. Although h264 is supposed to be the most efficient codec, in my experience the Sony XDCAM EX MPEG2 35mbps is actually way superior to the 48mbps h264 coming from the 7D. Then again, you can not necessarily blame the codec. The processing of the codec (ie the processing implementation and power) may very well give bad results even at high bitrates.
