Hyperdeck Shuttle 2.0 - Another External Recorder Option

\putting files on root folder of storage (nope), putting files on local storage (nope). I can't be the first person to try this in this sort of environment, can I? ;)
Thanks,
-Ben

just want to make sure it's not something simple, I'm sure you have this covered. When you put it in the root folder of storage, are you referring to the MediaFiles folder? and if so, you are putting it IN the MXF/1 (or whatever number you choose) folder, right? this is an Avid file, so there is no reason it shouldn't find it once in the right place.

Yeah, I'm putting the files inside the MediaFiles/MXF/(foldername). I think I'm going to be forced to return the Shuttles until they figure this stuff out. Neither Avid nor Blackmagic seem like they have an idea of how this would work. Honestly, it seems like maybe the AMA plug-in could be adapted to work better for this. If you look at Avid's documentation on the supported MXF formats for import with the MXF AMA plug-in, strangely enough there is no mention of Avid's own DNxHD codec on that list. Could be the problem with direct import using AMA.

So let this be a word of warning to anyone else considering this workflow. I feel like I've wasted a few thousand dollars on two of these, the drives, the docks, etc., unless I return them now. Atomos maybe?

No on-screen info
No clips delete
No space info
...very difficult workflow
...DnxHD quality in avid very bad but
good when transcoded to prores.

I think the firmware is very far from where it should be

Darren, in a word, no. Blackmagic says in reference to the onboard display button that "This button isn’t currently used but will soon be enabled by a software update. You will be able to download this for free at www.blackmagic-design.com.

As for the Interplay issue, someone on an Avid forum set me straight. It is possible to get the media in using the Media Tool on Interplay. I'd be curious to know if this method also works for stand-alone editors as well. The solution:

1. Create the following folder structure on the SSD: Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1
2. Place the recorded clips in that "1" folder.
3. Using the Media Tool, select the local SSD drive and choose master clips.
4. Master Clips show up in the media tool and can then be dragged to a bin and consolidated to the system from there.

Hope that helps anyone like me that was struggling (or will be struggling) with this. Blackmagic should really be recording these clips to this folder structure inside the device. And they need some freakin' documentation on how to import (regardless of the method). But it's new, I get it. Regardless of this new import success, I think I'm still going to return the shuttles I bought. Not ready quite yet. Oh, and did I mention that it's HUGE and HEAVY! I'll try to post a pic in a few minutes.

Do you guys know how to change DNxHD files to Pro Res? Actually i just looked back over the thread and I guess there is no way to get them into FCP.

This hyperdeck shuttle is a weird thing. You would think Blackmagic would do its homework and release something that worked and was really useful, but instead it seems this oddly under-priced "steal" that they don't bother to put enough work in to make it useable. Is it intended to be a serious tool or not? A bit of R&D and at double the price they would have a huge hit.

Almost makes me wonder if they released it just to screw with the Atomos guys who came out of Blackmagic.

New Resolve Lite beta3 for Windows now supports encoding to ProRes. It also understands MXF files from Hyperdeck2, so you can simply convert. It will also keep 10bit and it's free :)

can you power the hyperdeck off of a D tap and a normal camera battery? or is it just the internal battery?

well hopefully BM is listening and releases a new firmware soon to address our issues with it. as it is it's also a very nice sdi-hdmi converter, but for me to trust it at all i need some on screen info and sdi rec trigger

One, and will only use one. It asks for a CUDA enabled card, but I've been using it with a new MacPro's standard Radeon without obvious issue.

One, but if you have 2 in your system it will use one of them exclusively and this makes big difference. If it has to share card with WIN/OSX performance is degraded, but with good card still works fine.

On MAC is works with ATI and Nvidia.

On PC you need CUDA enabled card- no ATI support (at least with current beta).

Sounds simple enough but the workflow needs testing before I can begin building an infrastructure around it.

you mean we can render to pro-res on Windows?I thought that codec rendering was for FCP only

There are already few solutions with ProRes support on Windows: Carbon Coder, Telestream Episode etc. Apple licensed it to many companies. Resolve is next one and comes for free :)
Besides this there is open source implementation of ProRes in: ffmpeg, ffmbc. These ones are not restricted to just 4 modes- they are open- you can encode at 500Mbit with ffmbc and have 99.9% lossless video. ffmbc also supports 444 encoding. Speed is also good as it's multithreaded.

You have to try yourself- it's free.
