Live Capture w/ FCP - Timecode issue and P2 work around Q

I have Barry Green's book, the manual, and much information from the boards. My system for live/direct capture is HVX/1394/MacBookPro/FCP 5.0/HDD.

During my tests over the weekend, I discovered that the HVX sends a video stream down the 1394 cable even when the camera is in 'pause' mode. Therefore, the camera doesn't actually have to be in 'record' mode to capture.

If I have the camera record during capture, I need to find a way to work around the P2 card system, as when they fill up, the camera stops recording. I'm shooting in 720/24p so the loop function is disabled.

This situation created these questions:

1. If the camera is not recording during live capture, how is timecode generated and assigned (my term) to the clips?

2. Is the signal in 'pause' mode a full resolution signal?

3. How can I tell the camera to NOT record to the P2 cards during live capture?

As always, I'm very grateful for any advice. :dankk2:

The only way to get timecode in that circumstance would be to set the timecode generator to free run, not rec run. Yes the firewire streaming signal is always 100% full quality, and it has nothing to do with whether you're recording to the p2 card or not.

Barry - I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond. Your book is the only thing that is getting me through this HVX crash course that I'm in the middle of.

No way to disable the P2 recording so I can actually run the camera while capturing (assuming that this is the wise thing to do)?

I am trying to basically do the same thing as "emart" in the thread above; use FCP to "Log and Capture" live HVX200 video directly to my hard drive. Everything works great, except that I do not get a timecode stamp from the camera even when TC is set to FREERUN. Is there a way to have FCP generate a timecode stamp with each clip created using LOG AND CAPTURE? Or, is there a way to get the HVX to send the freerun TC to FCP during the Log and Capture?

To disable recording to P2, press the menu button, go to Other Functions, set the 1394 Control to EXT. You can also set it to Both, which will allow recording to both the camera and the external recorder. In both these modes, you don't even need a P2 card in the camera to record.

BTW, this is the same setting when using the FS100 external recorder. Also, PN modes are NOT supported through the 1394 output.

Live capture w/fcp

Live capture w/fcp

Yeah... Just set your HVX to TC free run, and 1394 EXT. Set fcp log and capture to: Device Control:Non- Controllable device
Capture Input: The format you want
You should then see "picture" in your log and capture window. Don't press record on you HVX. Just hit the capture button in fcp. From there fcp will capture anything you point your camera at...
