Hyperdeck Shuttle 2.0 - Another External Recorder Option

Blackmagic Design announced today Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. Main feature here is DNxHD 220 10 bit. Unit has 3G HD-SDI in/out. And price is still $345. This answers the concerns of the first unit which recorded only uncompressed. I have not confirmed this but I believe it will record to MXF for direct import into Avid. That's at least how it is handled for the Hyperdeck Studio

It's the same unit (Hyperdeck Shuttle)- just new firmware. If you already have Shuttle just update firmware and you have Shuttle 2 and DNxHD recording.
BM press release is bit confusing :)

Not exactly. I just went to update our original HyperDeck Shuttle and ran into the following in the manual:

Can My HyperDeck Shuttle Record to a Compressed Format?
The original HyperDeck Shuttle exclusively records in an uncompressed recording format. The HyperDeckShuttle 2 can record to uncompressed and compressed recording formats. To check if you have a HyperDeckShuttle 2, connect the HyperDeck unit via USB and then launch the latest version of the HyperDeck utility. The title bar of the HyperDeck Utility will report either HyperDeck Shuttle 2 or HyperDeck Shuttle. If itreports a HyperDeck Shuttle 2, then the menu options to set the recording format should also be available. These options will remain grayed out and unavailable with the original HyperDeck Shuttle.

Still, we're completely stoked on the new HyperDeck Shuttle 2. I have tested the DNxHD on the HyperDeck Studio and it works great. At $345 this is an awesome price. Don't forget that the Hyperdeck Shuttle is also an HDMI to HD-SDI converter as well as a HD-SDI to HMDI converter - so you get a recorder for free :)

That's a big improvement. Still no 1/4" mounting hole?

According to the press release, "For direct camera mounting, HyperDeck Shuttle Mounting Plate can be added to provide multiple pre drilled 1/4” and 3/8” mounting holes. "

I discovered the same thing-- the original Shuttle won't update.

The DNxHD codecs can be readily downloaded for free and all you would need for something other than Avid would be software to rewrap the MXF

I was pretty close to adding a Samurai to my F3... now can someone give this old FCP user a lesson in DNxHD....

Is it 10 bit ?
4:2:2 ?
How can I use these files on FCP 7?

How does DNxHD compare to ProRes? (other than being harder to type)

Thanks!

Hmm seems they answered my complaints. I got rid of my Hyperdeck, but now looks like I might wanna buy it again haha

I too am fuzzy on the DNxHD stuff... 10bit? 4:2:2? anyone know?

Most importantly whats the compression ratio?

ProRes HQ is 6:1 and Standard is 10:1

What is DN?

The Hyperdeck is only implementing DNxHD 220mbps 10 bit. DNxHD comes in a number of flavors of 8 bit, but the 220 10bit is the only one offered on the Shuttle. This is really big news. And you would have had to have sold your original Shuttle anyway, since it requires the new 2.0 version.

IMHO ProRes is a copy of DNxHD, so yes - extremely similar.
(Avid released DNxHD first, with open source code. Apple released the almost-identical ProRes later)

Can do 10-bit. Look for x at the end to signal a 10-bit version. EG DNxHD175x.

The bitrate: is the number eg DNxHD175 = 175mbps

Most guys offline at DNxHD36 and online at DNxHD175x (for 23.98 material) or DNxHD220x (for interlaced eg 59.94). But I have seen several things go to broadcast that were done with medium level bitrates, sadly.

Can do either 4:2:2 or RGB 4:4:4. But the 4:4:4 bit version (DNxHD350x) is new so probably not supported. (that was added after Apple added it to ProRes - so I guess it goes both ways :)

Nice thing for me is less gamma issues than ProRes and free Win & Mac reading & writing.

Hope that helps!

As I said in another post, the variant of DNxHD that BMD provides is 220 mbps 10 bit.

It differs from ProRes in that the superwhites are not clipped.

To use in FCP 7, buy Calibrated {Q} which reads MXF in FCP. $249

Just curious - what exactly do you mean by "almost-identical"?

Very similar compression technology (intraframe DCT, full-raster, 4:2:2 initially, 10bit initially), very similar (but not quite identical) datarates. Very similar features.

Different in small ways such as:
- Avid's one is a free encoder & decoder for PC & Mac, Apple's one can't encode on PC
- Avid's one (currently) is set to offers all broadcast-standard resolutions and framerates (eg 720p/5994, 1080p2398), Apple's one can work on all sorts of odd resolutions as well (4K etc)
- Apple's 444 one has a (rather confusing in my mind) internal switch between a 12-bit and a 10-bit mode, and a RGB and YUV mode (which should be awesome but in practicality kinda trips me up)
- Avid's one added Alpha channel support before ProRes
- Their compressed output is very slightly different (a little bit in ProRes's favor, I think)

But really not much of difference to worry about. Both are great tools for filmmakers and it's really stupid that Adobe hasn't developed something similar (or bought Cineform).

Otherwise, um, download the Avid codec yourself and give it a go? It's free...

Ok so how do I get these files to play nice with Final Cut? I'm running FCP6 and FCP7 can it just be re-wrapped, or ingested without any issues? It seems like that (Q) thing is pretty expesive just to get the clips to play in fcp... anyone work with this in fcp6 on up?
