Hyperdeck Shuttle 2.0 - Another External Recorder Option

Yes, with Resolve you can point your directory to a batch to "Import" and you can Render out "individual" clips in a batch. It took seconds to output 7 clips so it appears to be faster than real time on a 6 core Mac. There is a gotcha. You do have the audio files separate. They are named the same with V for Video and A1, A2 etc for audio, so it's easy to marry the two back together in FCP and other apps. While still not a perfect solution, I'm still stoked. Hopefully BM will just implement the Cineform and ProRes codec or wrap the .mxf files in a .mov for us.

thanks for the info, found another catch... Resolve does not work with snow leopard. ughhh no matter what I cannot use these files at all. I cannot update because i have some audio software that cannot be supported in new versions of os... so basically... i have no option. I'm calling BM and filing another complaint. Seems if no one else will do it, i will. It's ridiculous to implement compression that only works for 1 platform when the most widely used ones are completely shunned.

can someone with the shuttle2 try using a normal hard drive instead of SSD?
Of course with the DNxHD not uncompressed

It will be interesting to see if the Gemini verision of DNxHD does better when it comes out. Or Samurai's for that matter. Atomos has been talking about it for awhile, but still not ready for market.

Does better? its going to be exactly the same for anyone trying to import it in to FCP, it won't work. this is a codec built for avid's file structure, so in that aspect, it worked perfectly. this is exactly like people with Avid complaining that you can't edit ProRes natively.

Could it be the MXF wrapper that's causing the incompatibility and not the DNxHD codec itself?

The PIX240 records DNxHD wrapped in quicktime that imports into both Avid and Final Cut with the aid of Avid's free codecs.

Maybe I should buy a second Shuttle and use it as a player to capture the material in a codec that I like.
Takes probably the same amount of time as dumping the files to a HDD.

Tested a 7200RPM Seagate Momentus spinning disk HD. No go. Will not record DNxHD. SSD only.

That's too bad. The 7200RPM ought to be 50 MB/sec write minimum across the whole platter and the 220mbit DNxHD is only
about 28 MB/sec. Hopefully they can fix the firmware so this works.

I can't even imagine wanting to use a spinning hard drive. I hope that BMD does not waste resources on such a risky endeavor.

The Gemini is going to add DNxHD?

I had asked their rep if the reason the Gemini is uncompressed was if the chips didn't have enough horsepower to compress all that data. I was told that it did have enough power to do so, that other things had priority. But, yes it was going to have DNxHD. No official announcements have been made that I know of.

To me the Shuttle seems not quite ready for prime time. The Samurai will probably be the next one out with DNxHD. Since they have already announced it, I hope they are spending the time making sure its right before they release it.

Come on, I worked with the Focus Firestore for years and never had a single problem.
That "risck" is way overrated unless you take your camera to a roller coaster.

I, too, had a Firestore FS-100 with an HVX-200. It did skip a few times but survived until I sold it two years later. Week after I sold it, poor buyer told me the drive crashed.

In a similar thread on this forum, someone said " Also has both HDMI and HD-SDI so can convert between them." Is that really the case? If SDI is input, will there be a signal on the HDMI output for monitoring. I don't have and SDI monitor.
Yes, the Shuttle converts live, allways on.
That is, when there is an SDI (or HDMI) signal in, it is output on the SDI out and HDMI out.
There is no switch, it's always on.
I have had SDI from camera into the Shuttle and output from the Shuttles HDMI to aTV and it diplays the camera output on the TV whether recording or not.
It is a converter as well as a recorder.

Also please note that in the first version of the unit there was pretty bad image lag going from HDSDI in, and then HDMI out,

I got finally my Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 and updated the firmware to the last RC2 version. I have tried since to import without success as files or to "AMA link" to the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 mfx files in Avid Media Composer 6 . I have also installed AVID encoders, MFX AMA plugin etc.... I get error messages kind of "this media is not supported since the MOGSDK cannot recognize tghe essence descriptor from the source package".

So my question is: Could any of you guys who may have succeeded in using these DNxHD MFX files in Media Composer 6 explain how to import these or link into these?

You must copy the DNxHD files into the Avid Media -> MXF folder and then use the Media Tool to locate and load the clip into your bin. It will not work with just an Open or Link AMA command.

it might also make sense to start a new folder every time you start a project. the MediaFiles folder contains an MXF folder, then a numeric folder. every time one fills up, avid creates another. so when you are dumping straight to those folders, it is probably easier to just create a new folder first. If you haven't already found it, there is a great piece of software called "media mover" that will locate and organize all clips associated by project, thats a really cool way to keep track of all your clips too.

Anyone have a solution for getting the MXF media recorded from the new Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 into the Avid (MC6) IF you are on Interplay and shared ISIS storage? I've seen the recommended root folder/media tool suggestions here, but that doesn't work when in an Interplay environment. The media tool is essentially rendered useless when you are in an Interplay situation as you're system indexes the media on all local/shared drives and should make new clips available via the Interplay Tool within the MC. But it doesn't in this case.
I'm so frustrated with both Avid and Blackmagic about this...you have no idea. The media files created may in fact be DNxHD, but that's about as far as the integration between the device and MC goes. I've tried straight importing (nope), linking to AMA files (nope), linking to AMA volume (nope), using Interplay Access to import (nope), forcing a resync of the local media indexer (nope), putting files on root folder of storage (nope), putting files on local storage (nope). I can't be the first person to try this in this sort of environment, can I? ;)
Thanks,
-Ben
