Hyperdeck Shuttle 2.0 - Another External Recorder Option

Yep- the difference is that I'm a compressionist (don't even know much about shooting itself) and been dealing with different codecs, compression types, workflows for last 10 years :)
You may find 2000 users here and they won't convince me, as I have seen 1000s of masters (from HDV to RED, film) and yes AVCHD is good for weddings, Vimeo, youtube and laptop screens :)

Thankyou. I stand
with you.

Been working with the hacked gh2 and the intra high bitrate codec makes a world of difference. Just the shadow detail and also to my astonishment on smooth surfaces. The stock avchd is vbr so it also have an incidence on smooth surfaces because it is calibrated for efficiency and sometimes it overdoes it and you can see macroblock even where it should not be.

I happen to have the HyperDeck Studio, the rack mount version, here in our showroom with the 2.0 public beta firmware. I have switched the unit over to capture DNxHD and recorded a few sample clips. If anyone would like to test the recorded MXF file workflow on their NLE, feel free to download these clip(s). It would be helpful if you could report back your findings.

Can we have different sample- I downloaded it few times and it never unzips- looks like it's corrupted. It can be very small sample, like 2sec.

update:

I managed to download this sample and unzip properly.

MXF files from Hyperdeck 2 are way out of AVID MXF spec. They are not recognised by any software, which works fine with AVID MXF files.
It's beta, so I hope BM will fix it.
I don't believe AVID can import them neither- maybe someone can confirm it. Looks like these files are simply unusable at all!

Here are the raw unzipped .mxf files generated from the HyperDeck Studio v 2 rc2. Let us know how they work for you.

http://dve.s3.amazonaws.com/media/Capture0004A1.mxf
http://dve.s3.amazonaws.com/media/Capture0004A2.mxf

And to answer your earlier question, yes, we always copy the files from the SSD drive to a local drive before editing. It would be great if anyone could assist with a simple GUI type recommendation for wrapping .mxf files into a .mov file.

I only downloaded the first of these files (Capture0004V). It would NOT open in Media Composer 6. Would not import nor would AMA recognize it.

Yes- so it confirms my worries.
At current stage Hyperdeck2 MXF video files are simply unusable!!!
These files have wrong MXF structure and I'm 99% sure nothing will open them at all!

Once we have proper, working files I will post instruction- quite simple procedure.

Did you just try a standard import of the file? and then a "link to volume" or file for AMA? its been my understanding that AVID can't actually import its own MXF's, you have to put them in the MediaFilesFolder/MXF/1/mediahere and then use the media tool in avid to link to them. I haven't tried it yet, but will give it a go today.

so I did a quick test in avid. I dropped the hyperdeck MXF into the Avid MediaFiles folder and then opened, and created a new project. I used the media tool to locate the clip and it imported no problems. I see a man and a mannequin in front of a green screen.

EDIT.

I will add that inside the MediaFiles folder, I created a new sub folder (it goes numerically, I was at 5, so I added a number 6) and dropped the new media there. it seems like if you are going to be using the hyperdeck, the best way (and its probably the way I should have always been doing it) is to create a new sub folder for every new project.

Yes. That was the answer. Never thought of the fact that what the Hyperdeck was writing was Avid MXF files as opposed to the MXF wrapper. Just copied file into its own folder in MXF folder and located it with Media Tool.

Thanks!

Ned

Not sure if the question got answered but I just spoke to a UK distributor and he tells me that according to Black Magic it's new hardware, so your old V1 Shuttle cannot be upgraded to take DnxHD. He also tells me tat it does NOT trigger via timecode, which is disappointing. Think I'll keep saving for the Samurai!

glad I could help out finally! been asking so many questions as of late, I was starting to feel like dead weight around here!

So we have format which can be opened only in AVID- nice, very useful and standard format-hehe. There is no other tool, which can open these files.
Why can I open AVID MXF exported files, but not Hyperdeck2 ones? There has to be some header issues- CalibratedQ thinks it's DVCPRO HD file :)

What is AVID MXF file- surly it's data in MXF wrapper- no?
MXF is just a wrapper like MOV or AVI or MP4, etc.
