HVX 200A Brochure

I'm sure the improvement will be like the DVX 100 vs the 100a or more. But the test I'd really like to see is head to head with the EX 1.

I must admit, I'm a bit disappointed with the new specs. I was hoping for something a bit more ground breaking after two years. ie) Intra AVC recording, 1/2" chip, no pixel shift, sharper monitor with red or white focus indicator, a truly mechanical focus ring, etc. A less noisy chip, slightly wider lens and a 1/2 stop improvement is about as much as we got from the 100 to 100a. But that was only a year apart. For these to be the "Big News" after two years really, wait 2 1/2 years since none of this will be available until Fall 08, really bites the big one.

I guess Panasonic can't have a little camera taking a big bite out of the high end.

Now how about that Scarlet....

Hi all -

Did panasonic announce a ship date and a price for the 200a? I notice on B&H that there is now a $400 rebate for the 200. The rebate time frame extends to June 30. I only ask because I just sold one of my DVX100 cameras... I'd like to replace it ASAP.
Only thing I heard was that it'd be shipping at the end of the month, and I think it's supposed to carry the same price as the HVX200 had ($5995 MSRP).

There is a page on the Panny Japanese Site about the HVX200A/HVX205A with some comparison shots between the 200 and 200A lens:

No, because there is no such mode. Heh. I'm assuming you meant 1080/24pA. That's what I used. That's all I ever shoot.

Yessir. I was disappointed to re-read the brochure and note that I'd misinterpreted the 1080/24pN setting.

The more I think about the 200a, the less I understand the 200a and the reasons Panasonic chose to "update" it. I really don't. Really, really.

Well, lower noise is a good thing.
Other than that I suppose it keeps its place as a P2/tape hybrid cam.
It would have been nice to see more of the bells and whistles that are on the 170 implemented onto the 200a though.

That's what I mean. Skipping the HDSDI output and many of the other promised HPX170 model features simply make the decision a lot easier to make - especially for new buyers. As a legacy owner, I am much more interested in the 170, 500 and 150.

Also consider that Panasonic won't likely honor the 5-year warranty on the 200a, but, based on their "no moving parts" guideline, would allow the HPX170 into the "real" P2 club.

Again, the HVX200(a) is a great tool, but it is quickly being overshadowed and outclassed by its next of kin.

Okay, imagine it had been completely unchanged. Its place in the product line makes sense, right? The press release could have said "In addition, the HVX200 continues unchanged." That would have made sense -- it's a tape/P2 camera.

Then, on top of that, they had these new chips and said "hey, why not at least stick these in the 200A?" So it's an unchanged 200, which just so happens to be better. It offers low light sensitivity comparable to the EX1 (in 1080p mode), and a lot less noise. That's better than it being unchanged, right?

Correct -- the HPX170 is eligible for the 5-year warranty, and the HVX200A is not.

Unquestionably. Instead of being the flagship and the leader of the P2 Rebellion, the HVX200A becomes a side product for those that need it. Think of it as sort of an XHG1 -- it has HD-SDI for those who need it, right? That's what I figure the 200A is. Most people would want the 170, I'm sure. But for those that need tape, they still offer the 200A.

As well you should be - Panasonic is moving away from tape, and I think they're trying to gently nudge their users in that direction.

Absolutely agree.
And I don't think that's by accident.

Any word on whether the 200a is going to come with a 16G card like the 200 does? (or an 8G, i hear panasonic is trotting these back out)

i'm waiting to find out about this also. i have a 200a on reserve, but no 16gig p2 is a deal breaker for me. i'd rather have the original hvx200, 16gig p2 and $400 rebate. barry was going to check into this.

here's to hoping the 200a includes a 16gig p2.
