C200: Honest review from Newsshooter - casts a less than perfect light on the EVA-1

I’m completely comfortable. Just seems odd that if someone’s opinion doesn’t fall in line with Panasonic HQ there is a targeted approach to silence them, and it can be completely anonymous...

No that's just not true, there is no silencing opinions business here. I'll repeat that 1000 times if I have to. Maybe then it will become truth?

I've been a member of DVXuser since 2006, and I used to visit the site for information before that as well.

I have owned/rented/operated Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Red, and Arri cameras. I'm not a Canon 'fanboy' but I've decided to invest in Canon for my kit for 2 reasons - raw, and DPAF in a small handheld package. I also had a lot of Canon glass so it made sense.

I'll admit that maybe my opinion is biased since Panasonic has really let me down since the DVX-100B. They haven't been able to bring an affordable camera to the market that attracted enough attention and demand to merit making an investment in. Panasonic has always been a risk to me.

I've read everything, EVERYTHING that I can get my eyes on about the EVA-1 because I want to make an investment in equipment that I'm going to see a return in over years without needing an upgrade. Everything I have read about the EVA-1 has put a caveat on some aspect of the selling points of this camera other than it's light weight. It's ok. It's enough. Where a camera should be in 2017, even. But it doesn't blow anything out of the water.

Is it a good camera for 2019? 2020? No. In 2021 this will likely be a paperweight comparable to an iPhone XV by it's codec specs. That doesn't do it for me. Not for $7.5k.

So when I read a review that says nice things but doesn't seem to indicate that it is anything special, I tend to read between the lines a bit.

The fact is that if Canon 'crippled' the C200 to protect the C300II, then Panasonic is clearly crippling the EVA-1 to protect their line as well. Giving you just enough, for now.

For broadcast, sure 10bit is required... and maybe everyone will suddenly start using the EVA-1 but probably not. All of the companies I know that are making content to air are shooting on the C300MKII. Moreover, since the EVA1 requires a 3rd party EVF or monitor it's actually more directly comparable to the C300II. But they always compare it to the c200 - when in fact it should be compared to the C200b which is far less expensive. If your clients are demanding 10bit, maybe you should buy a C300II? They don't tend to know specs well - just names and buzz words, like Alexa, Red... The GH5 shoots 10bit, but no-one is shooting a series for air on that that I know of...

And to my point that this site is full of marketing folks from Panasonic... an hour after I posted a negative comment about the camera, one of the guys who is out, going to the shows, selling this camera to the market was on here to rebut my opinion. If a Canon project manager is on here to defend Canon products, please speak up?

Recently, there is a Canon representative here: Loren Simons, Sr. Engineer, Field Applications, Canon USA.

I don't see him writing a lot despite Canon products are regularly drawn through the mud here.
Probably because Canon is happy with the sales department.

Now getting to the point: why 'ordinary' users fight camera wars here?

Do they have hidden agenda? Are they users with multiple accounts formed in a gang?

Will a possession of here highly praised camera make you more attractive for hiring instead of your skill-set?

People, let camera manufacturers fight their fights, what do you have from it?

You will never see one manufacturer representative pointing out negative points of concurrent product.
If hard pressed, they will more likely point positive points of competing product then speak against.

And they know best what are strong and weak points of competing products.
When you start designing new product, first thing you do is acquire all available products in segment that you will enter.

Why is that so? Is that something real gentleman would never do?

Not that they have silent agreement.

Probably they want that fruit of their labor to go sour?

Or they don't want to take of their glows off and let all kind of re-sellers to get their hands dirty?

Are we in this forum getting advice about filmmaking from sales people?

Is now a good time to point out that “freedom of speech” (ie: the first amendment) is a restriction on the GOVERNMENT.

You have no right to free speech here. You have no right to be free from censorship here.

This is a private site. If the owners of the site had a problem with Mitch posting, they’d rein him in. They don’t so they likely don’t.

Get over it and move on.

And now back to EVA1/ Canon C200 discussions. Some of us here are trying to make final decisions on the purchase. Let's talk EVA1 and Canon C200!!!

Respectfully!

I honestly think you can't go wrong either way but it depends on what you're working on. If you NEED 10 bit, go with the EVA1. But if you can deal with a pretty good 8 bit 4:2:0 codec, and you get 12bit RAW on top of that, go with the C200. I bought the C200, and I started to get worried that the EVA1 would blow it out of the water and I made the wrong choice but I realized that I don't do broadcast work on a normal basis, so 10 bit isn't required for me. I deliver content for clients that primarily need online video. Whenever I'm doing some short films, sketches, or high production commercial work, it's nice to know that the 12 bit raw is there for me when I need it.

The DPAF is a serious game changer, and it has saved my ass so many times during event shoots. I hear the EVA1's autofocus isn't really anything to write home about, but it's still a good camera. Both are great cameras! I'm even thinking about financing a EVA1, so that I have two A-Cameras on my shoots!

10 bit is not always a requirement for broadcast.. just saying. Especially for sporting events. UFC, HBO Boxing, Showtime Boxing, NBC, ABC, CBS sports except 8bit. Trust me.. ;)

Thanks "SherwynS"! I'm 100% sure on my next step and what you stated makes sense. Going to purchase the Canon C200! I'm now trying to decide on which forum sponsor for my purchase. Think I'm going to give Pro Video and Tape in Oregon a call!!!! I've purchased from other sponsors in the past, I've heard some good things about Mitchell and Vic at Pro Video and Tape (provideoandtape.com)............They are "Authorized Dealers for Canon" and they are on the west coast in Portland, Oregon.......!!!!

Yes. It is true. Else, I would not have shot with my original C300 for broadcasters. Corporate guys and production houses who want footage to be shot are more demanding, as they want reframing in post. I feel angry when someone crops my composition and creates another shot out of it. Unfortunately, with 4K it is going to happen more frequently since finishing is predominantly in 1080p.

And the fact is if someone is not already shooting for broadcast, then why he/she is bothered about a camera meeting broadcast specs or not? If broadcast is not your bread and butter, then better to buy whatever makes sense for your present business and hire if by chance you get a broadcast job.

At the moment, I would prefer a different kind of discussion. Let us show whether C200 or EVA1 has more number of "cinematic" or well composed and lighted films by users. May be we can then have some peer-to-peer learning by looking at those. Else, rehashing the specs doesn't make me any wiser. May be DLD or someone else can start the C200VsEVA1 cinematic fight club and keep track of the scores. :)

Definitely buy both! Yeah, right, I wish I could because I like certain features of both, a lot.

If 10 bit internal is your priority, EVA 1
If DPAF/RAW is your priority, C200

Either appear to be fully capable of capturing beautiful images if you know what you are doing so it really just boils down to the importance of specific features. I would be happy with either, but because of the nature of most of my work and my 50-something eyesight having a hard time nailing focus in 4K when running and gunning, it appears that the C200 is a slightly better fit for me, at this time. YMMV. Also comes down to the value equation, C200 at $7,500.00 is ready to go, EVA 1, for me, would HAVE to have an EVF, add another $2,000.00 to $2,500.00 which puts it up at $10k. Sure, CFast cards and extra batteries for the C200 are expensive but the new V60/90 SD cards aren't cheap either so I still end up spending a lot more to get the EVA 1 to a workable configuration for me.

Dan, I GREATLY appreciate all of your responses on the forum! I've learned a lot through the years with many of your tips and ideas! Partially based on your response to many of my individual concerns (and several of your ANSWERED POST to responses of other forum members), I decided to purchase the Canon C200! Andree gave some really good insights that were helpful too. I'm sure the EVA1 is a good piece of equipment, so I'll keep my options open on purchasing an EVA in the future..............

Thanks man, that's nice to hear. You'll enjoy the C200, just beware of it's caveats and work around them. The EVA 1 seems pretty great too, I will definitely be renting it to shoot some tests and jobs. Feel free to PM if you have any C200 issues that are too obscure for the forum, I have posted a few where it seemed that nobody else was using the C200 in the way I was and my questions got little to no response.

Seems like a natural progression to C200 (coming from the C100/ C300, which I've owned in the past). If something pops up that throws me for a loop, I'll be in touch. Thanks Again!!!

Side question Mitch.
Were any of the EVA1 units at cinegear mock ups?
Were any functional?
I'm just wondering if I was holding a piece of "wood" or not.

Non-functional units at CineGear. But all the mechanicals were the same and any info released at the time was correct, if still limited at the time. The weight and balance of the units were correct as well.
