HMC150 questions answered...

If you are using Vegas... you should be fine...

I'll just add that Vegas is fine unless you want to shoot in 60P (or 50P), then it starts behaving badly :(

For the privilige of editing 50P footage I have to transcode to Edius HQ AVI format before I can even dream of using it in Vegas otherwise it's stutter central!

Do you know what Panasonic means by "active frames?" Panasonic's literature on the HMC 150 states it can shoot 1080 24p but adds to note saying "active frames only." I've contacted Panasonic tech support on this without success. My larger question is how 1080 24p compares to 720 24p, either in visual quality or ease of editing.
Thanks.

I would like to know those issues as well!

By "active" frames, they mean there's no pulldown and no duplicate frames (like has had to be the case with DV and DVCPRO-HD). Another way to say it might be "native frames".

I'm pretty sure it outputs the TC through the Composite Video I/O but then that might be a proprietary signal for camera to camera synchronisation only - I'd be interested to know that one too...

It outputs industry-standard LTC timecode through the composite video jack, if you set up that jack to serve as a Timecode Out port.

how does the HMC150 handle time code? Without firewire, how do you get the tc into FCP?
Not really sure what you mean. Do you mean for capturing the recorded footage? Because if so, you normally just don't do that with an AVCHD camera. There is no streaming footage. The recorded footage has the timecode embedded in the data file; there's no firewire streaming possible on AVC-HD (or XDCAM EX or XDCAM-HD or AVC-Intra; these new codecs just don't "do" streaming capture).

So you record the footage, and then drag the footage file onto your computer and edit (well, with FCP you convert it to a QT file and then edit).

Or do you mean using timecode for use with something like an HDMI capture board? In a case like that if you need TC you'd have to use the LTC out.

For Barry: when do you expect your HMC150 book to be available (I searched and could not find a date).

Best wishes for the festive season too, from a new 150 owner. Cheers, kl

It's underway, but things are developing so rapidly with post that I'm taking it slower to make sure that it's still relevant by the time it comes out!

1Q 2009, hopefully. :)

Barry, are you using Edius 4 or Broadcast to view the AVCHD? Also, have you tried running it through ProCoder3? We tried but ProCoder3 won't see it but the small coder that came with Broadcast does. What the ???

procoder 3 doesn't see .mts files. try renaming them to .m2ts.

for windows, i use the free app 'file renamer' to batch rename my raw files before transcoding to canopus hq avi

For Barry G.: *PLEASE* email me when it's ready: a guaranteed customer here.

cheers and best wishes for the festive season (from a fellow author)

Quick question:

Can I use my DVX100 batteries on an HMC150? Or is it a different, incompatible battery system altogether?

Sorry if this has already been discussed to death. I tried searching, but couldn't find the answer here.
