HMC150 questions answered...

Hello Barry
I am thinking of getting a HMC 151 to use with my Cinemek adapter, do you have idea if this camera performs well with the G35?
Many thanks

Barry's 150 book says that SETUP is for analog output only,. But then it says that setup is not used in digital video. How is that? 4:2:2 component video spec (Rec. 601) specifies black as value 16 in [0, 255] digital scale. 8-bit Rec 709 uses the same value. DVD-video uses the same value. This is relevant for both 50Hz and 60hz systems. While this "raised" black is not SETUP simply because this is digital video, not analog video, it is not a zero value.

I suppose that MASTER PED is used to raise/lower this black level, for example, to record superblacks. Many DVD players and TVs can reproduce superblacks.

Am I not getting something?

I have a newbie question for anyone with experience (Barry?) with DVX 100, HMC150, HPX170.
I am a long time member here, but haven't been around for a while because honestly I've been a really happy freelance DP shooting smaller projects with my DVX100a for years and I'm not one to just hang around for tech talk when I don't need too.
Now It seems I really need to move to an HD option but I can't abandon SD, obviously. The HVX seemed like the best, affordable transition, but now that I see the tapeless HPX option it's tempting for it's useablity upgrades and lower weight (I shoot lots of handheld with doc material). Is it essentially an HVX without the tape drive besides the usability cleanups?
But the expense of P2 really concerns me. So then I see the HMC 150! Sheesh! This seems ideal, even though I'm still a little wary of having no tape option for SD web clients (for the many shoots where clients often just want a DP with cam, to hand off a tape and walk away). The HMC 150 seems like it might be ideal for me, but I'm a little concerned about the compression of the SDHC cards. Is this a realistic alternative to the HVX? i.e. is there a discernable resolution difference (or any at all) between HD footage (either 1080-24p or 720-24p) shot with this to an SDHC card and one shot with say an HVX straight to P2 in DVCPRO HD.

The Panasonic site says there is a "free Transcoder!" to convert to DVCPRO HD for this, but I don't want crappy compressed HD if I'm going to bother upgrading everything. Do you think I should maybe just go with an HVX so I can stick to my mini-DV for now and let the client provide storage and lens adapters for bigger jobs, or is the compression great enough that I should dive into an HMC 150 and leave tapes behind in favor of the cool, cheap SD cards and lighter weight.
(did I already mention I shoot lots of docs? I don't like the weight of the HVX with no shoulder mount, but I'm so scared to leave tapes behind). Maybe I should post this in DOCs too is it ok to put it both places?

Does anyone know if you can monitor the time code on an external monitor via either the Component out or the HDMI out? Before we buy this camera we need to know whether or not our script editor and DP will be able to reference time code on the log sheets while in the control room. Thanks!

Melanie

Yes. You can set up the video out to display all the goodies that are on the viewfinder if you wish. Including timecode.

Question for Barry:

I am having some issues with my footage having glitches in it. (looks similar to a vhs tape being fast forwarded).
It is happening here ant there throughout my footage.

What should I do to correct this?

I'm shooting 1080-30p cineD

glitches were seen in cam and are seen in log and transfer viewer in final cut pro.

Another question also, Is there a way of cutting my files up in camera so that my computer can import them? The same mentioned clips as before are 70 min and 40 min in length and My computer will not upload them. The shorter clips are fine, (such as up to twenty minutes).

I'm guessing not, (Nothing was mentioned in your hmc book about it), Just thought I'd ask.

Thank you,
Adam

When I shot a seminar a little while back I shot in "HE" mode and had no problem uploading and those files were over two hours long. Does the format make a difference?

Am i going to run into problems when editing avchd footage? Are we not yet at the stage where i can plug the cam into my comp, transfer the footage and just start editing it in premiere... no transcoding or messing about whatsoever?

Is this happening yet?

With a fast i7 and enough ram you should be able to edit right off of the SDHC card with Premiere CS4.2 (I do)

It was my hard drive that was the problem... Its an external and it keeps going to sleep while my footage is transferring.

I brought it directly onto my computer and had no problem.
The glitches that I was seeing before are not there. I'm not sure what that was.

I love my hmc. It's a great camera. My lack of knowledge on computers gets in the may a bit.
