Hey Guys!

LOOOOONG time no post. I've been SUPER busy shooting and shooting and shooting just so that I can get better.

I'm actually not that much better, but at least I'm still trying. My friend Josh and I put together a wedding highlight video for you to check out:

http://www.vimeo.com/4630198

Constructive criticism is ALWAYS ALWAYS welcome.

Notes:
2 HMC 150s
We provided a Same Day Edit (SDE)
FCP/Color
Steadicam Pilot
Brevis MP1
Lots of learning time

Many thanks to everyone here for encouragement and inspiration.

Wow I thought that was fantastic. Not my type of music but it certainly went with the footage and the pace of the video. I LOVED the steadicam shots. They added an entirely new dimension to the video. What record mode and shutter did you use?

Thanks very much Thomas. It was a great learning experience for us. It was tough trying to shoot run and gun under changing lighting conditions. Outdoor one moment. Indoor in seconds.

I record all events 720 60fps. Gives me the best slow motion. I'm tempted to move to 1080 60i because of detail, but I'll have to run more tests so that my workflow is just as fast. I don't like the idea of de-interlacing footage. It's an extra step I'd like to bypass.

I used the Scene File 4, which I think is Panasonic's version of Bleach Bypass. It gives me footage that I don't have to color correct much for Same Day Edits. But if I'm not doing SDEs, then I prefer the Cine D mode. Gives me gammas I like for maximum color control with more shadow and highlight detail.

Hahaha, we have a lot in common. Great job by the way!

I just shot my first wedding & sde under my company April 18th.

We have 2x HMC-150s, a glidecam 4kHD and edit on a MBP. Hahah!

What a crazy world. I'm actually pretty interested in getting a 35mm adapter and a Canon 50mm 1.4 if some potential work comes through.

Just curious, how old are you? Where do you live?

Best,

Jordan

Great freakin job dude! Loved the color. Good work on that :).

I'm not a big fan of alot of slow motion but you pulled the edit off well. Some of the shots that look realtime don't look to be in 60p to be honest. Looks 30p (which is a good observation). I've actually NEVER shot in 720 60p before and I may start doing so after looking at the way it looks.

I HATE shooting interlaced. Any of my own projects I will shoot in progressive but when I shoot with weddings, Im forced to shoot 60i cause they all have HDV cams that don't shoot anything else.

Please keep up the great work :). I'm sending you a PM.

Cheers!

This is some really nice work for a wedding video. Adds a very nice narrative and your steadicam work looks really great. How do you like the pilot with the 150?

cheers and congrats.

You'll find a growing number of people who will start to have the same set up.

I absolutely LOVE the Brevis. I currently have a Brevis MP.2 now, so it's even better. My only problem with it are the limits. You can't stop your lens to anything higher than F5.6, you have to learn to deal with manually focusing all the time, and the Brevis ground glass attracts dust (although it's much better now with the MP.2)

As you probably already know getting an 35mm adaptor is not cheap considering you have to buy the lenses as well. 50mm 1.4 is a great starter lens. You can pretty much do anything with the 50mm 1.4.

Just curious, how old are you? Where do you live?

...and you haven't even bought me a beer yet? jk
I'm in Orange County, CA and 32yrs of age

Hope the info helps with your decision.

Thank you very much. My friend and I worked hard, so to hear that people actually enjoy watching is very humbling for us.

To be quite honest with you, the first edit was tons of slow motion and I couldn't help but notice it too. I thought that adding real time clips in would be better. But as I started to re-edit, I couldn't stop putting the slo mo clips in. It's like a drug I tell you!

Actually, the whole thing is on a 24fps timeline. So if it looks 30fps, then it's must be a digital look that does that. Although I've seen footage shot with film that look digital.

As far as slow motion goes, I feel like you can pretty much use any kind of footage you want as long as you can edit it together without looking like you made a mistake. It seems like every music video I watch now is 90% slo mo.

I HATE shooting interlaced. Any of my own projects I will shoot in progressive but when I shoot with weddings, Im forced to shoot 60i cause they all have HDV cams that don't shoot anything else.

I concur with your thoughts. I hate dealing with interlaced footage.

I've been looking at the brevis and it seems like a good candidate.

I assume you used to own a mp.1? If so what big differences did you notice, if any?

I pretty much ride manual focus 98% of the time, but I guess it's a different world when you have a few inches of focus area to deal with. hehe

I'd gladly buy you a beer if you want to travel out to Kansas City.

Love those steadicam shots S1H.
That's a lotta dough.
Great work.
A few shots are a bit overblown and outafocus 0:54 2:13 .
Keep it up !

Thanks Everts. Working hard at keep things in focus. I tell you, it sure isn't easy.
Some of the overblown stuff was done on purpose, but since they appeared weird to you, then it must not have been done the right way (if one even exists). But thank you for the insight. It is always always always appreciated.

We'll keep on truckin'

The moment I'm in KC I'll hit you up for a bar run!:Drogar-Love(DBG):

I really don't see much of a difference in the MP.1 and MP.2 since it's a lot of internal circuitry. It does SEEM like I can stop down(up?) to the F8 and use higher shutter speeds. I should probably run more tests.

posted note on vimeo... keep up the work! Any BTS pics of your set up?

Thanks for the input Mark.

The quick pan from the groom to the bride was done on purposed. I can see your point about it being ugly. Perhaps if it where smoother rather than being such sudden motion, it wouldn't have appeared so bad. I wonder what others thought of that particular shot? Was it that bad to another set of eyes or was is even successful at all?

Here's what I roll with:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=155651

I don't have any steadicam photos at the moment, but I'm sure I can put something together when I find more time. But a good friend of mine has the exact same HMC150/Steadicam here:

http://www.michaelshu.com/shumedia/Home.html (You'll have to imagine the DVX as a HMC though :))

Again, thanks for your thoughts Mark. They are well received. :)

Well the first think is HOW did the Bride and Groom like your work ? Our opinion is secondary to that of your client.

I do not shoot weddings so can someone tell me what would the average rate for having a video like this ? Sure seems like a lot of work and when Some1swork says "I don't charge a fortune for my work..." I can't help but wonder what he considers a lot of money vs. what it really cost in time and equipment to recoup his cost.

Nice job and I can't help but think the client was thrilled.

p.s. Did you shoot two ceremony's ? One ceremonial and one traditional (white dress etc)

Some comparisons would be awesome. Also it appears you aren't using the flip.

So the LCD flip will flip the image and it looks right on your camera and then in post you just have to flip the footage?

I'm in slight disagreement with you. Your opinion isn't secondary in my eyes. The bride and groom don't have a trained eye to see footage the same way many videographers/cinematographers see. Don't get me wrong, the B&G LOVED the footage and we are greatful, but if YOU like the footage, that's a whole new thing.

If Christopher Nolan was told by a kid that Batman was great, I'm sure it would have a different affect if Danny Boyle told Christopher Nolan the same.

Apples and Oranges I suppose. Besides, I bring my footage to the forums for honest critiques to improve a skill that takes so long to craft. I don't want to be a person who loves his own footage but EVERYONE else thinks its crap. Hahaha.

Let's just say I do video for the love of the art and not for the money. I have a regular day job for money.

Nice job and I can't help but think the client was thrilled.

There was one tea ceremony and a change of clothes for the vows. I'm not sure if that's considered two ceremonies. But both were very short comparitively.
